UPDATES Weinstein Co Suffers More Exits & Layoffs
The Weinstein Company will have a few extra pair of boots from their old company Miramax on the snowy ground of the Sundance Film Festival. Harvey and Bob are close to naming Peter Lawson as the new head of acquisitions and co-productions, and Lucas Webb to spearhead UK acquisitions and co-productions for The Weinstein Co. Both execs are close to extricating themselves from Miramax. They became available following Disney’s downsizing of the prestige shingle once owned by the Weinsteins. I’m told that by the time the Sundance Festival gets going this weekend, both Lawson and Webb should be functioning in their new posts and looking for films to acquire for TWC. The hires buck the recent tide of layoffs in a restructuring campaign that has brought the TWC roster down to under 100 employees. Lawson replaces Eric Robinson, who just exited, and Webb replaces Rhodi Thomas, who left during the last downsizing about six months ago.

Is this a joke? Who in their right mind would sign up with Harvey to have their film buried or mismanaged?
I hear this whole thing is causing some turmoil at TWC. Nobody at the top has informed the staff that these two were joining, amidst upcoming cutbacks, even the acquisitions execs weren’t told.
Lawson is a good guy, but Harvey is going to eat him alive. The guy needed a job, I understand, but I hope he knows what he’s in for.
Also, if he’s Head of Acquisitions, then he’s not replacing Eric Robinson. Eric had nothing to do with Acquisitions, only production and development as far as I know.
If anyone can handle HW, it’s Lawson. At least they have money to buy films, unlike all the others that have folded.
Two questions:
1. Where did TWC get the money to hire two new guys?
2. Who will sell their films to TWC?
I know there are more questions raised by this, but I’m feeling lazy.
that makes a lot of sense… they can’t afford to adequately promote and release the movies they already have sitting around, but they’re going to send these guys out to acquire some more?
Yeah, but will TWC actually properly distribute anything it acquires?
I don’t know where Lucas is going to work from – I understand they shut the (very small) Beak Street office ages ago.
Lawson couldn’t get a job anywhere – who is going to let the Weinsteins distribute their movie? Pullleeze.
So what about some of TWC’s upcoming films? Any release dates or predictions? I realize Hoodwinked 2, All Good Things, and Shanghai have been delayed with no release date. What’s the deal…
