In a new interview with Charlie Rose, Jim Cameron said he wants Avatar to win Best Picture for his team and Academy voters to give Best Director to Kathryn Bigelow, his ex-wife and helmer of The Hurt Locker. I can’t tell if this brazen campaigning hurts or helps his Oscar chances:

Charlie Rose: So if someone sitting there says, ‘Look, I’m going to give it to Cameron, Best Picture, but Bigelow Best Director –
James Cameron: That would be a fantasy. That would be my fantasy outcome, absolutely.
Charlie Rose: That would be what you’d like to see?
James Cameron: That’s the best possible outcome… because I know how hard my team worked and how much they would — how proud they would be of that accolade, you know what I mean? And look, for myself, I have already got an Oscar. I’ve got a couple of them, you know. And I respect the whole institution of the Academy Awards because it’s the pinnacle of achievement in my chosen profession. But I don’t really need another one. But to be honored – you know, to have the team honored and for their accomplishment, that would mean so much to them. And I think that would be the fantasy outcome in all of this.
Charlie Rose: So you’re saying to the voters, please take a look at my team and go for us as Best Picture. But –
James Cameron: Yeah, and I –
Charlie Rose: — go for Kathryn Bigelow for Best Director.
James Cameron: I mean, all I can say is that that would make me very happy if that – you know, I don’t want to try to get –
Charlie Rose: Happier than if it was Best Director for James Cameron?
James Cameron: Honestly, yes.

Jim Cameron you suck! Danny is right “If Avatar flopped and only made a few hundred million, there is NO CHANCE it would be up for Best Picture. That’s all you need to know right there.” The Hurt Locker is wonderful film and should win.
So what happens when she wins BOTH for best pic & director?
Avatar shouldn’t even win best picture. While it is a good movie experience, it is NOT a good movie.
Amen. JC thinks he is. What a putz.
“…it is NOT a good movie”…According to who? Oh…you? Wait…who the hell are you again? I think its a good movie, 94% of top critics on Rotten Tomatoes thinks its a good movie, including Roger Ebert, who gave it 4 stars.
I’m rooting for Bigelow, but GAHHHWD, what an ego turd. Linda Hamilton may be batshit crazy, but she certainly had a point re: this jackhole.
Shut up & make money, Cameron.
That’s all you’re good for.
Gotta love the balls on this one. Funny story about Cameron: Lives in ultra exclusive Sweetwater development in Malibu. Has a ridonkulous house surrounded by other ridonkulous houses all occupied by people just like Cameron. Anywho, Cameron’s house is directly above the property of the insideous offspring of some third world dictator. Cameron thinks he’s god b/c of his body of work; the neighbor thinks he’s god b/c back in the jungle…he is. Baby Doc likes to party down and has people over at his place at all hours when he is in town. JC is not impressed and asks Baby Doc to keep it down as the jigginess of the get togethers are messing with his mild Canadian sensibilities and disrupting his creative process. Baby Doc is unfazed and proceeds to make party as it pleases his majesty. Cameron responds as any adult would: hitting golf balls into the midst of Baby Docs festivities and whenever he needs to let off some steam.
Is everyone forgetting who brought the subject up? Cameron was asked how he felt about the scenario of Avatar winning best pic while Bigelow getting best director. So he answered how he felt about that scenario. I don’t know how arrogant the man is, but he wasn’t asked to tell us how he wanted the results to come out. Can you imagine him, or anyone being ungracious enough to say, oh no, i don’t want her to win, I should have it all? C’mon people, you are being ridiculous about a question that was already slanted and for which he really had only one answer.
You know, he only answered the question because Charlie asked him. It wasn’t like he said, “You know, Charlie, this is how it’s going to be.” Cameron and Bigelow still get along and are great friends, so I think he is sincere in this. And he wants Best Picture for his team, not him. There was a time when he was an arrogant p**ck, but I honestly thing he has mellowed in the past twelve years. So quit being the very jerks you proclaim him to be.
And Inglorious Basterds best picture? Not hardly. Shouldn’t have even been nominated. But hey, that’s just my opinion
Jesus Christ, if you guys posted something with some CONTEXT you’d see that Cameron wasn’t saying “Give her the Oscar bc I have enough.” He was saying he doesn’t need the Oscar as vindication for his work, but he’d love his TEAM to get the award bc of all the hard work they put into it, and that feeling goes toward his ex-wife too. He thinks she should get it. But you guys try to give it some anti-Cameron slant, and its obvious. Next time, why not watch the ENTIRE clip before jumping to conclusions.
Best Pic to Fern Gully: The Last Rainforest! Sorry, his “team” deserves a humbling experience for being the yes-men and women they are. And is it just me or did Sigourney Weaver have a stroke a few years ago? Seriously…
Dan,
From my perspective, you totally nailed it! I had the exact same thoughts when I read the headline of this story in the e-mail update. My exact utterance was: “He’s such a control freak … it’s simply a pre-emptive strike.” As the saying goes, a tiger doesn’t change its stripes.
And, in reading the actual interview, I wasn’t surprised to see he never says anything positive about his ex-wife Kathryn — he just says he already has plenty of Oscars and doesn’t need another one. What an EGO!
SO many “haters” out there. Cameron didn’t dis anyone, especially his EX – you have to see the whole interview & in context. I really didn’t think Avatar was great, but the Academy thinks otherwise, so there’s got to be some reason (ratings). Who cares if Bigelow wins best director – Kubrick & Hitchcock never won, and Scorcese won after Ron Howard.
cameron is so full of himself. why is a movie about blue smurfs with a script that’s a remake of Dances with wolves is making so much money is beyond my understanding… Hurt Locker is the best film of the year, best film, best director too!
As an academy member, I’m so turned off by his faux act of generosity — it’s unnecessary and transparent in it’s “i will suggest an outcome beforehand to cover my egotistical butt” because likely, that’s the outcome that IS going to happen, truth be told. I guess pretending to plant a valiant seed will make the sting a little less painful.

And you of course are an academy member. Get a life man and don’t say bullshits
People seem to be overreacting IMO
Yes Cameron is is a egotistical control freak that should not talk in interviews without pre-prepared answers ;P
But he has pretty much been supporting Kathryn for months now, and they both visited each others sets when making Hurt Locker and Avatar during several occasions
“Get a life man and don’t say bullshits”
Me Tarzan. You Jane. ok Renos, that was enlightening.
why shouldnt cameron have a huge ego and a big head. look at what he has accomplished. avatar did real good at the box office and look at all the jobs that were created because of that film. cameron is a genius and deserves all accolades. yes, best director and best film for 2010. avatar.
