Andre Meadows of the site Black Nerd Comedy breaks down why Lost and Heroes hate black people. He makes a pretty compelling argument:

I did not laugh one bit.
This guy is annoying. I’m sure if anything happened to him that he disapproved of and couldn’t control he would say “It’s cause I’m black isn’t it!”
So annoying and pointless – every character has drama or problems in their role.
Im wondering did you make at least 3 of the posts here with dup handles? Can we get an IP confirmation?
Anywho, the guy in the vid is absolutely correct.
Modern white nerds are not fans of blacks, ESPECIALLY black nerds or any potential black nerd fans. Why?
1.White nerds often are forced to developed psychological inferiority complexes, therefore they actively look for others then can put down in some form of another. This is usually do to being stigmatized by the ‘cool kids’.
Anyone who does not fit into their box, which often is white-suburban-male, is ostracized and demonized. Is High School Cafetaria Sociology. Dont believe it? Play xbox online or go to a ‘nerd’ oriented message board like e baum or ytmnd. Full of nerdy geeky kids, and PACKED with racist comments and remarks.
2. White Nerds dislike Black Nerds especially (when in majority white environments), because white nerds are not as able to easily shake off their nerd persona for respect, whilst black nerds get a free ‘Cool Card’ just by being black. All they need to do is dress different, and they get to fit in with the cool kids, the jocks, the stoner’s, whatever. When white nerds do so, because they are already established in the minds of other not-nerd white kids as unfavorable in terms of coolness, they arent able to convince others they are no longer nerds.
3. Black guys tend to get women easier. White and black. YES THIS IS A STEREOTYPE. But in the eyes of sexually ostracized nerd kids, this is important. People grow up hating the guys who got all the girls and in their adult life effectuate that hate.
WHERE IM GOING WITH THIS-
Shows like LOST and HEROS and TRUE BLOOD and BATTLESTAR GALACTICA are created by, written by, and aimed at the White Male Nerd demographic as their ‘base group’ (its not the only demographic, but its the one they seek out first to establish others through word of mouth).
These shows are written by white nerds who write into them their own personal feelings. They create characters who are the people they wish they were, and villianize and kill off characters they grew up loathing. Hence = Black characters are going to either be the
1-stereotypical ‘thug’/villian/criminal, or
2- People who get the Ax.
Is not new. From the 50s-80′s it was the standard in most hollywood movies. The 90s pulled that back, but the old hollywood racializations seem to be returning.
talking crap mate…go to a music shop..look in the r&b section and see who is promoting da thug life, glamourising violence and so called respect-not exactly helping ur cause are u..but hey as long as it’s all good with the $$$,all my black girlfriends agree and love battlestar and love the white c*ck so shut yo mouth-peace
I dont think so but.
1. The R and B section has R and B. You are alluding to the Rap section.
2. Can you honestly sit there and tell me that you can judge all black people and black culture by modern rap (the majority of which is sold to whites)?
Thats like saying all whites are nazi emo punk rockers because thats all I see when I look in the deathmetalslaveryevilsatan alternative-core-whatever section in the music isle.
Never said ALL blacks, was pointing out a section of entertainment, just saying that a lot of entertainment is created by blacks where they have no problem portraying themselves as hustlers, gansters, criminals, against the law types and so on.
And that is from them, yeah sure a lot of it is financed by big studios etc,but thats what they want to do..let them.
It’s just double standards to complain about it,and by the way I love Sam Jackson,Blade,Lando calrissian,Winston zedmore,Benjamin Sisko, morpheus, lucious fox.-ALL ROLE MODELS AND COOL.
Nazi, Emos and Punk Rockers are all in a different category.
In saying that ‘White Nerds’ think and feel a certain way your using the same kind of sweeping generalizations that bigotry is all about. White nerds or people of any stripe aren’t out to get Black people-just some people are out to get some people.
More bigotry is justified in this world by people claiming the other guy is the villan than anything else. Be fair to others.
Peace
Eko, even if people were to give you a free pass on your “black guys get women easier than white guys” crank, what your saying is that an entire type of people are racist because their against an entire type of people.
You prove your wrong because you use exactly the kind of ‘logic’ you claim to condem in your post as its ‘validation’.
Eko and his post should both be banned for racism.
So let me see… your problem is that the casting agents for these shows – who’ve hired, (according to the lists you spouted out) one whole lot of color – are racist? I’ll bet every African American actor who is collecting residuals for years from those performances would outshout you, apparently at about thirty-to-one.
I approve your aims, but not your aim.
You clearly didn’t even watch the video. Delete yourself.
Is Heroes still on?
(checks local listings)
Nope.
I think you guys might be internalizing this a little to much. Easy humor–I laughed a few times, mostly at the Heroes digs. Thanks for sharing it Nikke.
HAHAHAHA!
This is a hilarious variation on the black character in horror films–smart, noble & dead in the 1st act.
Clearly, this is snark. Observant snark, but snark none the less. If he’d been serious about it he would’ve commented about how few people of color are behind the scenes….
Should add about Lost… Abadon (or however you spell it.) was killed off Lost because JJ Abrams hired him to be on Fringe. Mr. Ecko wanted off the show so they killed him off. And they’re bringing Michael back for the final season, his argument holds very little weight. Especially considering they’ve always had one of the most diverse cast on TV.
Yeah agreed. I mean you could make a reasoned argument that Michael was the victim of some bad stereotyping at points, but by the time he mentions Rose getting cancer (so?) and Walt growing too fast (and?), the argument gets incoherent.
Which would be okay if the video was funny, but…
I was always under the impression that Michael was written off the show BECAUSE the timeline on the show was making it difficult to explain why Walt was growing so fast. The writers have said repeatedly that they wanted Eko for the long haul of the show, it was the actor who wanted to leave. And Rose is still on the show. I appreciate the effort, but if your going to mock the diversity of a tv show, why not use one of the many shows on tv that have no diversity at all.
F.U!
Coming from a black executive in the industry, stop playing the race card and play the game. The scoreboard requires black and white eyeballs to produce green-Period. We’re not looking to be labeled great “black” talent, we’re great TALENT!!!!!!
but you just called yourself a “black” executive. You’ve been playing with the good ole boys so long, you’ve lost perspective and can’t appreciate racial humor. I’m sure you also think there is plenty of diversity among the executive ranks in the industry.
No the scoreboard doesn’t require black & white eyeballs. How long have you worked in the industry? When you play the game you play your cards if you think there is absolute racial fairness in this industry. Then you’re a fool. Movies & TV Shows have been killing off black folks since the creation of television. We always know we’ll die in the first 15 minutes. WAKE UP!!
Agreed, Oscar Winner.
It’s too easy to become overly burdened if you focus on the barriers vs. remaining light enough to simply hurdle them.
I don’t know about Lost, but at least in Heroes’ case I think it’s more a matter of intelligent people they hate. That show blows. Can you write worse pulpy soap dialogue? More cliche “twists?” Good God, just cancel it already. Oh, wait! If NBC did that they’d be down to The Biggest Loser and residuals from The Olympics telecast for revenue.
Aw c’mon, it’s kinda funny; and it’s light way of saying where is the diversity/equal representation on these shows and that needs to continued to be discussed until it changes. Everyone always knows the inside joke among Blacks is that the Black character in the film gets killed off first. LOL – But seriously, you don’t have to be a social analyst to see the lack of diversity in MAJOR roles (with major salaries, not residuals from some couple quick episodes, the actual long-running salaries and dare we say fame and notoriety too) is far from equal on television. I think it’s kinda sad though that even with digital media, race still can’t be brought up and discussed without immediate dismissal or assuming the person is taking a position of being a victim. No matter whether it’s the March cover of Vanity Fair, Lost or any number of things; we can’t all really be crazy that to point out there is a blatant disparity that we don’t feel comfortable with, right?
Yeah… and there should be an equal amount of Native American actors with equal fame, and Mexican actors, and Asian Actors, and… and.. and..
This has been the case for sci-fi for eons, there’s a female version of Andre, shes satirist Danielle Belton aka The Black Snob and she wrote on the subject for the American Prospect. Brilliant and you’re awesome for posting this, its a subject most just roll their eyes at.
http://prospect.org/cs/articles?article=blacks_in_space
http://www.theblacksnob.com
Same case can be made for ’24′… Curtis, Palmer, etc.
jesus I made it through 12 seconds…something tells me the guy’s problem is 1/100,000th that he’s black, and 99,999/100,000 that he’s super fucking irritating
Wow. You guys… realize this is comedy… right?
RIGHT?
thank you. the guy is so clearly joking. people need to relax a little bit.
He is absolutely right though. Every black character in each of those shows disappeared. The facts can’t be denied.
Totally. And now the only minorities left on Lost in regular roles in the final season include a Muslim Iraqi, two Koreans, a Chinese American, a Burmese/Indian/English actress, a Japanese actor, a Cuban American, and, yes, a black actress who has been on the show from the beginning.
The last three people, including the black actress, have never been series regulars. I actually think Lost is an amazingly diverse show, but that doesn’t subtract from the fact that all the black characters have been very nearly dispatched.
I don’t think any of them “disappeared” I think it was quite clear what happened to them
Loved it! Think I’ll go watch “Hollywood Shuffle.”
Spike Lee argued in his essay “Magical Negro” that “magical negroes” like Morgan Freeman, or Michael Duncan Clarke in the Green Mile, or Will Smith in Legend of Bagger Vance, were just props to stories about White protagonists, and that the use of “magical” characters who had magical powers by virtue of being Black was a fairly racist attitude.
While he may be right, the reality is that White audiences are about 75% of the population, and the vast majority of those who watch English Language TV (because Hispanics watch Spanish Language TV, as any quick check out of Neilsen’s site can prove).
Whites do not find Black characters interesting or exciting in and of themselves. Dennis Haysbert can play the lead in “The Unit” but his being Black is incidental and irrelevant to the storyline. Mostly, White audiences (which are mostly female in TV) want soapy, idealized versions of themselves. That means “hot” looking White gals, and men of various hunkiness of any particular color but always upper class.
This means guys who exude “street” are going to end up like guys who exude “Larry the Cable guy” redneck-iness. Not on broadcast TV except as minor cops or so on (Ice-T, etc.) They don’t show up on soap operas because they have the same hunk quotient as Larry the Cable guy (I don’t see too many fat, Redneck leads on those shows either).
If that were the case, how would you explain the Cosby Show? Jeffersons? A Different World?
The reality is this: Whether one is white, black, brown, or yellow, people appreciate smart, good stories and appealing characters. The COMEDIAN’s point was that the characters played by black Americans were largely written off and out of the storyline and he humorously jabs at the shows as a microcosm of a larger issue: the entertainment’s industry lack of diversity.
Furthermore, your point of the U.S. population being predominately white not finding black characters “interesting or exciting” because black Americans represent such a small percentage of the population is flawed…how would you explain the U.S. jewish population, which represents approx 5% of the country, having a disproportionate number of movies, shows, etc aired? It has less to do with America finding a particular group uninteresting or exciting, but rather, WHO is in control and WHAT kind of content is being distributed to the public, and unfortunately, the kind often associated with black americans are written by, or more to the point, “green lighted” by non-blacks, and are often quite ignorant. I can understand why they are often angry at the mis-characterizations. The misconception is that blacks love it and whites don’t. When in actuality, blacks don’t appreciate them either, from what I understand.
Sadly, your comment, which on the surface seems logical, is an excuse the industry gives to explain why there is no diversity, when all you’re doing is perpetuating a problem. Take it from me…I’m a studio exec who is white, and used to think the way you did until I realized I was wrong.
wait are you claiming that A Different World was decent television???
Wow being a studio exec but be an easy job to get and to maintain. A lot of the people who have made arguments on here are studio execs. They also must not be that busy for they find the time to comment or some losers video about diversity in entertainment.
Perfect.
because Hispanics watch Spanish Language TV, as any quick check out of Neilsen’s site can prove
First, lets throw out the fact that Neilsen is a reliable reporter of what people watch…
Second, true, immigrants watch mostly Spanish language TV – but Hispanics whom are born and raised in this culture, you’ll find are more diverse then you (or Neislen) gives them credit for.
That said, it’s comedy people – lighten up. Unless comedy is racist?
lighten up it’s comedy! No ones talking about racism, jeez…
Wow, cue the defense mechanisms. He never said that anyone was racist, and never mentioned casting directors at all. He certainly never said that the black actors on those shows were ungrateful for their roles or their residuals. He just pointed out correctly that in two shows with a long list of cast members, some with longevity and some without, that the black characters all fell into the broad category of the “without.”
Is it annoying? All subjective. Is it pointless? Only if you don’t care to take an anecdotal look at the realities of big-budget prime time casting.
I didn’t think it was very funny, actually… but his point was well-taken by me.
This guy makes me think Black People complain too much about perceived racism. However, I want to add that he might really be seeing racism, but I sure don’t see it in those shows. He’s also annoying because he’s a nerd.
I can’t imagine someone as stupid as you are can think. White people don’t complain? Trust we got a lot to complain about. When you turn black & have to deal with it. Then and only then can you tell me about it. Don’t pretend to know something that you don’t. White people think they got the answer to everything. That’s ANNOYING!YOU’RE ANNOYING! It’s was suppose to be funny dummy!!!!!!
Ummm….
Is anyone going to make a video about how Networks hating “quality content”?????
Not about race
Not about Gender
ABOUT CONTENT!!! PEOPLE, the argument is this: The networks hate quality content!!!!!!
Lighten up, people. This is a person who obviously loves and watches the shows he talks about. This is not an opening salvo for reparations, it’s just comedy. If it’s not your taste, fear not, there are still plenty of white guys doing comedy too.
The guy’s NOT lying! It happens a lot! I know that there are a lot of “white” antagonists but sometimes I’ve found downright mistreatment of black characters on TV. Go on white writers and producers, keep justifying it! Go ahead and turn the finger back at us African Americans but YOU KNOW what your underlying feelings are when you write what you write! I’ve been in TOO MANY situations where I was the only black person in the place and YOU KNOW what’s said when we’re not around! I just happen to be one who “calls it out”! It’s made for a difficult career but I DO sleep at night! I just think that more of us should stop being satisfied with landing a “job” and create! Put our own shit out and not have to worry about how we’re treated by whomever…
Yes… all white writers now are racist. Who knew?
Whites will always deny their hate, hang-ups and prejudice.Anyone with a sane mind knows that what you’re saying is correct, all one has to do is turn on the TV, flip through a magazine and nothing but white people are are, for some odd reason, turning orange.
And this generalizing the white population into “whites always deny their hate” and all “white writers & producers are racist” is certainly in no way another form of prejudice? I can assure you it’s doing nothing for the joint effort to fight prejudice.
I’m shocked that this guy even think about it. Why do black people always brings out racism in every issue? Wake up, man. Racism is the past for everybody else, except for the black people.
why are blacks always complaining? If anyone should complain it should be Hispanics. hardly any in Hollywood.
