Jennifer Lopez has spent most of her singing career at Sony Music Epic Records. The bland version of what happened, I’m told, is that the contract period had ended and that Lopez had fulfilled it with her last two singles, and that Lopez and Stringer decided together not to move forward with an album. Others insist the Sony label dropped her. There also is disagreement on how finished her upcoming album was before it was canceled. Internet reports say her 7th studio album, titled “Love?”, was supposed to come out in April and featured production from Danja, Jim Jonsin, Darkchild, Chris n Teeb from Dropzone, and The Neptunes among others. A song from it titled “Fresh Out The Oven” surfaced online in October 2009 as a buzz single and reached #1 on the U.S. Hot Dance Club Songs chart. But the official lead single, “Louboutins”, had its radio debut on November 23 following the song’s premiere and performance at the 2009 American Music Awards went to #31 on the Hot Dance Club Songs chart. UPDATE: *The song was the Power Pick of the week twice, and rose to #13 on that chart.*
Lopez insiders claim to me the album was “by no means done” and everyone was “only a few songs into it” and “unlike movie dates, street dates rarely hold in the music biz”. But that album was real enough to delay the release of her upcoming CBS Film, The Back-Up Plan (see below). Others tell me the album isn’t being released because “Louboutins” bombed, as did her performance at the American Music Awards, and Sony Music execs “aren’t sure who her audience is anymore. Where once she had little girls, she’s been supplanted by Beyonce, Gaga, and Rhianna. Lots of fighting going on between Benny Medina (who, of course, is spending their money like it’s 10 years ago) and the label.”
But when I began inquiring about this, her manager Benny Medina emailed this morning to confirm the split. “Jennifer had a wonderful relationship with the Sony Music group, and they have shared many successes together, but the time was right to make a change that best serves the direction her career as an actress and recording artist. She is grateful and appreciative to everyone Sony for all that they accomplished together.”
The Lopez insiders claim the decision was “a mutual one” between the star and label’s current CEO Rob Stringer (younger brother to Sony parent company CEO Howard Stringer). They say the two had a meeting at the Four Seasons Hotel in Los Angeles during Grammy week, and, after a “heart-to-heart” conversation, the star and executive decided to end the long relationship. “It was all very amicable. They hugged at the end of the meeting,” claims one. Meanwhile, I understand that Sony will still be releasing her “Greatest Hits” album in the fall.
Supposedly, Lopez has not wasted any time getting signed elsewhere: it’s rumored she is already in talks with Island Def Jam’s bigwig L.A. Reid to come to his label. Granted, this is a tough time for music artists, especially those like Lopez who were once big in the biz and now are battling not only the changed economics and rampant piracy but also the moving target of today’s music fans. JLo insiders insist none of this is fazing Lopez, who took time off to have two kids with her recording star husband, Marc Anthony, and who is just now returning to her acting career with the release of the feature The Back Up Plan.
But CBS Films recently announced it’s postponing the release of that romantic comedy to April 23rd, same weekend as Wall Street 2 and MacGruber. It had been scheduled for April 16th which then got too crowded. And before that January 22nd when it was to be the first CBS Film. Complicating The Back-Up Plan‘s release as well was that J-Lo/Sony album and exactly when she’d be available to do publicity for the film. Well, no one has to worry about that now.
Meanwhile, JLo is scheduled as both the musical guest and the host of Saturday Night Live next
weekend. But now she has no record and no movie to promote. Hmm.
Editor-in-Chief Nikki Finke - tip her here.

Though I have never had interest in her genre of music, I have enjoyed the films of hers that I have seen. Hopefully she rebounds well from this. I believe her best movie role lies ahead.
ITS AMAZING HOW HARSH AND JUDGEMENTAL MUTHAF**KERS ARE LOL….SMH
I have always been a big fan of JLo’s. I thought she was adorable in Maid in Manhattan. Then she had to go and show the Hollywood liberals that she was one of them, and she insulted Sarah Palin. I thought she had more class than that. I do not think I could ever enjoy watching her next movie, or listening to her next album.
J-Lo was amazing in Selena, and then she thought she could actually fill her shoes in the latin community and it went down from there.
Finally.. the end is near of her so called career. I tried to watch her movies but she always acted unnatural, worried more of how she looked on the big screen than acting. I would say a no name actress is better than her when it comes to making movies. As for her singing, sorry but I can’t tell who’s who between her and Paula Abdul. She had a lucky break when Selena died unfortunately, I wish Selena did not die for it gave us Jennifer Lopez.
Who is Jennifer Lopez?
Just kidding. She is a has-been. JLo sucks and SNL sucks. They deserve each other.
hey Dwigt, that’s actually pretty genius. they’d probably be happy if they could implement that.
She needs to age gracefully and transition, look at Vanessa Williams. Do a holiday or children’s album or something. She looked totally stupid in that sheer catsuit.
that movie looks horrendous. how does it get made?
JLO takes potshots at Sarah Palin and now we know why. The walls of Jericho were crumbling around her so what better way to get the attention of the lefties in Hollywood and the recording industry.
Someone finally took notice! I (and others I’m sure) thought this too.
Come on people, stop all of the cruel comments. The truth is this: She went away for a few years to have her babies. In the entertainment industry, you CANT just go on a “vacation” from the spot light and re-appear whenever you want to, without losing a large chunk of your fan base, and your overall relevence. In the entertainment industry, there is always someone new coming in. People are very fickle, they arent as loyal to a particular artist like they used to be. In Jennifer Lopez’s case, she goes away for a few years, only to come back with a song about “Louis Vuitton” shoes?? ( Louboutins). I mean, is that the best she could do?? Is that the best her writers could do?? Other than raising her kids, could she not have done better during her time away?? So if her record label dropped her, if her albums arent selling, it is her fault, it is her song writers fault. She should know better. Fans around the world anticipated so much more from her, and I feel she let them all down with cheesy, meaningless songs. She has the money to hire the best writers and producers, why didnt she?
I just HAD to comment on Louis Vuitton shoes (louboutins). Christian Louboutins shoes (sp?) are completely different from Louis Vuitton.
As far as JLo. There’s a combination of factors, but mostly people dislike how arrogant, materialistic, and vain she is. Couple that with her age and voila–you’re irrelvant. People just don’t like to support a-holes, so she lost her audience. Oh, and she can’t sing.
Err….Horrible Singer…overweight dancer…pretty good actress…mediocre movies…save your money…soon you’ll be Jenny from Branson…
Makes Taylor Swift seem talented.
not a J LO fan , but nobody can make taylor look talented . That anorexic kid is a mess
I thought she was terrific in ANGEL EYES!
There was no reason that movie had to me made.
first of all not aging werll my ass she is so pretty honestly I had no idea she was 40 already second of all she in my opinion has great talent and the only reason she ius out of the limelight right now is because she took time of to have kids ahe will find her muse again and continue to make music she has roked the charts for a little over 10 years and right before she got preggers she was still rocking the charts and as for calling her names like a c#&t that’s messed just because you don’t like her music doesn’t mean she’s a bad person I have heard nothing but good things about her and as for the sara palin thing I agree w JLO I can’t stand that evil B@#ch
Nikki – you always have the information before anyone. It is hysterical that she’s promoting a film that isn’t coming out until April, and promoting an album that isn’t coming out at all. She should satire that on SNL if she were really smart.
You scoop everyone Nikki Finke. YOU RAWK!
What a talentless celebrity. J Load, indeed.
Jennifer is still beautiful, but age is slowly creeping up on her. I still love her but her personal life is not good. Having Been with Puffy is a turn off. I just wish her good luck.
I thought “Angel Eyes” was her best movie.
She can act.
I give her props for achieving all that she has, but lets face it, we’re in a new era here. No one really gives a damn about J-lo. She might be able to pump out one or two more singles that get considerable air play but, I think it’s safe to say her time in this business is pretty much up.
With the way the recording industry is now anyway, I just don’t see J-lo doing anyone any good, or making anyone any money to say the least. Go enjoy your kids, and your shit ton of money and let the lady gaga’s of today rule the music world for the next 10 years.
I’m reading these comments, and they are missing one obvious point, that Jennifer Lopez has aged but has matured emotionally, and is doing music for young audience, Janet Jackson has exactly the same problem trying to act 30 when she’s over 40, and her albums bombed as well.
Jennifer Lopez never had any talent to begin with. If she did adult contemporary and toned that image she could still get away with that squeaky voice. This is also what happens to a lot of actresses who are pegionholed with the sexy image. She should retire with her kids in Florida and forget about show business.
This is what she needed. Good move jennifer. She needed a whole need direction
I think the smart move for Jennifer is to stop trying to compete for the Beyonce/Rihanna (young R&B) demographic. That’s a losing proposition. Instead, like Sade, be an adult entertainer, singing about adult themes, directed at an adult audience. She could also make a play for a slice of the Latin audience by releasing a Spanish-language version of such a project. Sade and SuBo have proved that there’s an audience out there, quite willing to spend $$ on music that reflects their own level of maturity.
The commentators above are right about one thing: her efforts at playing the wise-independent-ghetto-but-still-real persona are really tired at this point. That style is increasingly tired for any artist. But for Jennifer, at her age, being a mother of two . . . Sony was justified in questioning who her audience is
hi i’m juan i’m not a jlo fan at all, i respet her . but as i saw up there karma is a bitch¡¡¡¡ and i as a mariah carey fan i still don’t forget the stolen sample moment in 2001. that was one of the many causes of mariah breakdown.
this is what happen when you are a tool of tommy mottola/ a shaped product without enough talent in music .
i’m sorry for her but as mariah sings in for the record
THE OTHER REGULARITIES THEY CAN’T COMPETE WITH MC¡¡¡¡¡¡
Y’all are nasty and ugly with your hater comments. JLo is a product of public demand and the media. How many of you pick up US or People or any of those other star-filled crap magazines? admit it…you love them and you buy them. Therefore, YOU created her. It’s fun to set up the pins them knock em down with a giant bowling ball, isn’t it? Jerks. Let’s see how life treats you as you try and achieve your goals/dreams and it gets a little rough. Especially as a woman. At least she had the cajones to put herself ass out there (literally) and do something with her life.
and btw…Monster In Law? thoroughly enjoyable.
She would still be relevant had she stayed with Diddy. I guess that’s why Beyonce never wants to go away, cause same thing will happen to her
Jlo had her days and we all had fun, but she’s done now. SHe’s got nothing to offer now
Bow out gracefully Jennifer
She’s probably going to set up a show in Vegas, right?
The whole actress-turned-singer idea was rather interesting when she came out with her first album. Her singing was really mediocre at best, relying mostly on her producers, background singers, and autotune. She also benefited from a lot of the tabloid frenzy surrounding her high-profile relationships (she sold millions of albums on the strength of the vehicle known as Bennifer), but those days are over. She settled down, got married, had kids, and noone’s really interested in her anymore.
They finally realized she can’t sing for crap?
