UPDATE: I just learned Rupert Murdoch and Peter Chernin were there, too.
Don’t feel blue if you were left off the list for last night’s big party thrown by Jim Gianopulos and Tom Rothman for James Cameron and the Avatar folks at Jim G’s Brentwood home. Most of the guests were directors or stars or Fox hires: names included Steven Spielberg, Oliver Stone, Bryan Singer, Robert Rodriguez, Anne Hathaway, Gerard Butler, Roger Corman, Danny DeVito, Robert Duvall, Maggie Gyllenhaal, Colin Farrell, Hugh Jackman, Salma Hayek, Josh Brolin, Peter Saarsgard, Joe Carnahan, etc.
Editor-in-Chief Nikki Finke - tip her here.

It’s all smiles and sunshine until Cameron realizes that they’re charging the party against the film’s budget and it’s coming out of his gross points.
Where is the Avatar cast then?
How lame is that?!
I was JUST thinking that. Maybe they weren’t mentioned because Nikki assumed it was a given that they were there.
I was there. So, was most of the cast.
any vfx crew invited?
i thought not.
actually yes there were.
relax, cast, crew and vfx were all there having a great time.
i think maybe they should have included celebrating Cameron and Landau(producer). Whether or not the movie came in on the original budget(doubtful) HE kept the studio big wigs in the game. Whatever they may think of him personally the stamina fortitude and mere brillance of the guy is overshadowed by the dollars “Cameron” made for FOX. Did any of the Fox executives know anything how this movie was to be made? How it was made through the evolutionary process of film making, NO. Jon helped them get through that and kept them from cutting the bait. Cheers to Jon
There were several Avatar cast members there as well as many of the people who worked on Avatar’s production.
Avatar is only the 26th most successful movie ever there are 25 films that have sold more tickets and made more money. What the hell are they celebrating? Inflation? That’s all they have to celebrate. The cost of a movie ticket has gone up so much so fast that they are celebrating a meaningless statistic. The amount of money they spent to make Avatar was enormous. They are celebrating a movie that in net profit terms isn’t nearly as profitable as many other pictures. Nor will it ever be as net-profitable as other pics. If you want to celebrate a profitable movie how about Deep Throat the most profitable picture ever on a price to return basis. Or the original Night of the Living Dead. Nikki please stop perpetrating this charade. Start adjusting films for inflation and start using “tickets sold” as the basis for popularity please.
Actually it’s the 20th most profitable movie of all time, and by the time it exists theaters worldwide, it will most likely be within the top 15 or top 10. Just saying.
That’s a quite hilarious post. Like it or not, the film industry does not measure these things by adjusting for inflation – just gross. What’s more, doing as such is highly inaccurate; as a recent topic at BoxOfficeMojo proved – that the figures for Gone With The Wind were vastly inflated.
You sound very bitter.
Doesn’t “and the Avatar folks” rather suggest cast and crew? The rest of the names are people not actually associated with the film, hence their mentioning.
“It’s not that kinda par-tay!”
Anonymous – They’re celebrating Ego. Then again, #1 hit of all-time? Can’t blame them for strutting their stuff.
I wonder what Fox has on the books to try to smear/bad mouth Kathryn Bigelow in that category race.
I was going to ask the same in reverse of Summit against Cameron, but then Cameron’s storied reputation writes itself for them doesn’t it? Plus “I’m King of the World!” doesn’t help either.
Or is it King of the Galaxy now?
I’m sick and tired of people screaming foul whenever someone write “Avatar made the most money for a film in history”.
Nobody gives a damn that Gone with the Wind (or any other ancient film) after inflation adjustments would have beaten it.
If any of the films that need inflation adjustment were to be released today, with the same technological advantage that Avatar had, it is doubtful that they would come close. If Avatar was released in the 1930′s (without the aid of computer effects, using traditional fx to compensate), it’s quite possible that it would STILL have dominated the box office.
Avatar is the first to cross $2 billion in box office revenue. It’ll make a fortune in DVD/BluRay sales. There is no asterisks, no caveats. Avatar did it. Nothing else has. Higher ticket prices, you say? It doesn’t change the fact that Avatar has grossed more than $2 billion. You say Avatar has less attendance than the old record holders? By that rationale, Avatar should be able to include every viewing of the film from its theatre run, DVD/BluRay rentals and sales, online distribution, VOD services, even the illegal downloads because for us, in our time, we have plenty of options for our viewing entertainment… prior to VHS, every other film out there only had its theatre run and much later, it’s cable premiere. Based on that, I highly doubt that the current *adjusted* record holder stands a chance at holding the overall viewership record OR the box office records.
Enough already. Give credit where credit is due. Cameron made a film that a lot of people spent their money to see.
So, stop trying to dilute this incredible achievement in film AND business and see it for what it really is: The biggest movie ever.
Anonymous stop hating. You’re just jealous you weren’t at the party. Avatar not profitable??? What kind of chronic are you smoking?
Maybe now they’ll finally put up a congratulatory banner on the Fox lot… I mean come’on, it’s quite an accomplishment. Where’s the banner?
Still, Avatar is a boring crap movie. I can see why it appeals to teen boys on the verge of suicide.
And the graphics? Please!!! They were mediocre. The 3D stuff? Boring.
My only hope is these teen boys get Darwinized out of the gene pool and continue to leave earth since “nothing is a great since I saw Avatar”. Good Lord! Good riddance to a flawed genetic pool that has no taste whatsoever!
You are all so jealous.
This pic is paying for Hollywood life style for the next 12 months.
Stop pretending.
This is a frigging business… or you were living with the idea that we create art in this town? HA!
