Documentary filmmaker RJ Cutler, who directed the Anna Wintour/Vogue profile The September Issue, is heading from high fashion to the Hamptons social swirl. Cutler successfully pitched Warner Bros on the feature film Au Pairs, an adaptation of the Melissa de la Cruz novel about three teenage girls from different socioeconomic backgrounds who work as nannies for a wealthy family in the Hamptons one summer. The girls balance their domestic duties with their suddenly interesting social lives. The pic is being produced by Drew Barrymore and Nancy Juvonen of Flower Films and Les Morgenstein and Bob Levy of Alloy. Liz Garcia wrote the first draft and another writer will be brought in to execute Cutler’s vision for the film. The intention is to shoot this summer in East Hampton where I’m sure residents will be thrilled. This sounds like The Nanny Diaries but with 3 strong roles for teenage actresses. Cutler also produced such documentaries as The War Room. He’s repped by WME.

I’m still waiting for someone to finally produce “the Second Assistant.” They could market it as a “reboot” of “Swimming with the Sharks!”
Would someone (anyone0 please tell me why a guy who made documentaries would automatically know how to handle a film filled with ficticious characters? What’s happening these days in this business is scary!
Off the top of my head: Todd Phillips, Seth Gordon and Kevin MacDonald all crossed over. They’re telling stories with characters and holding your attention for over 90 minutes. Why would they be less prepared than a commercial or music video director? Different skill set sure, but less important? I don’t think so. They’ve shown they can shoot a movie.
It’s simple bro, once you’re in, you’re in.
That is, of course, until you’re out again.
and we have a winner!
RJ Cutler was an experienced and skilled theater director long before he broke out in documentary films. He knows how to shoot a film, he’s demonstrated that he knows how to tell a story, and he’s got experience working with actors. What more would you want?
Well if that guy’s documentary is better than 95 percent of the crap that came out last year, maybe he deserves a shot at a narrative feature if he wants one. Goddard and Truffaut both started out as film critics and they made some pretty decent films.
Great news for East Hampton. The town was hit with financial mismanagement issues and there are several empty storefronts on Main Street so they could use the added business/revenue (I assume the town issues permits, etc. and there would be extra business to restaurants, caterers, bars). Nice place to be shooting a film in the summer. Enjoy.
I produced a show for this guy and I can tell you he’s borderline incompetent (and a horses-ass, but that’s less significant than his lack of competence.) If this terrible book ever gets made (and it most likely won’t, because the folks at WB will quickly figure out RJ doesn’t know a master-shot from his elbows) it will be a flop. Producing reality TV and documentaries is very different than directing a feature. You don’t have dozens of people doing it for you… you have to actually have a vision and the ability to communicate it.
If you’ve actually watched The September Issue, I can’t think of anyone better to adapt a book about vapid socialites running around pretending to be compelling.
Why do I have the feeling that Alexis Bledel, Kristen Stewart, and/or Dakota Fanning will be one of the stars?
@jasper – I’m sure you can find people who think RJ Cutler is a horse’s ass. I highly, highly doubt you’d find many who think he’s borderline incompetent. That seems ridiculous to me.
Besides, don’t you think Drew Barrymore & Nancy Juvonen have demonstrated pretty sharp judgment as producers?
I love the books they are a great read. But if they do happen to cast Kristen Stewart than I will completely change my opinon she already ruined Twilight lets not have her ruin another book with her crappy acting. Of course that’s just my opinion of the whole thing but still. Let’s have some good actors/ actresses play the roles this time!!!
It’s more suited as fodder a TV show with a Gossip Girl target market. As a film, I see labels and great ops for product placement. But as a story…notsomuch.
