UPDATE: I just spoke to Letterman’s producer Rob Burnett who says: ”When we were talking about what it should be in very early conversations, we talked about the notion of Conan being involved in it in some way. I made an initial call to [Conan's producer] Jeff Ross, who said they had too much going on to consider it…” Conan and Leno on the same set? Priceless. But I bet NBC would never have allowed Jay to participate, especially now that the network is removing all memory of O’Brien working there.
News reports say the spot was shot upstairs at the Letterman show’s Ed Sullivan Theater where Leno had to sneak in wearing a disguise (hooded sweatshirt, glasses, fake mustache). It was Dave’s idea to do the ad and he wrote the bit, which echoed a similar spot he did when CBS last aired the Super Bowl in 2007. That one involved only Dave and Oprah. Winfrey said OK to this bit immediately. But the NBC suits had to agree to it before Jay could participate. They wound up flying him in on the corporate jet:
Editor-in-Chief Nikki Finke - tip her here.

I don’t know… you fly Leno all the way to NYC just to do that… Dave shoulda pushed for a better concept.
All the CocoNuts still whipped up in a frenzy can’t stand the fact that Jay has the ability to laugh at himself and was willing to have some fun at his own expense.
Dreadful. Not helped by the fact Oprah has zero warmth nowadays and her obsession with trying to act (see her terrible “performance” on 30 Rock) is really pathetic. And who thought this would be amusing or interesting? A bunch of assholes sharing an inside joke. Pft!
Ummm seen Color Purple or Beloved? I don’t think she needs little two bit spots in commercials or 30Rock if she wants to act. Just Sayin”
The spot showed how talentless these three actually are.
I don’t know what you people are thinking. I certainly thought it was better then watching the clothing/budweiser ad. Dave did the right thing for all of them. It was genuis.
Thought the bit was brilliant. Yes, having Conan on it would have been even better but 1) I don’t think Conan would be amenable to any type of appearance with Leno no matter how funny the concept and most likely 2) his NBC “exit contract” keeps him off the air for at least 6 months.
Leno’s agreement is just part of his current makeover. NBC and him realize that his ‘nice guy’ image was shattered by his backstabbing of Conan and this opportunity from the Letterman camp was just too good to pass up.
Conan will be forgotten in a couple years, if he’s so great, why the lowest ratings. Fergusson will be number one when Dave retires, is funnier than all 3 together besides some talent, what else can jay, dave or conan do besides stand up.
Lowest ratings can be explained simply:
1) Leno had earlier show for same target audience.
2) Leno was fighting to book guests from the same talent pool.
3) Leno would tell all of the topical jokes at 10, leaving scraps.
At least now we know which of the two has a “chip” on their shoulder.
mehh that spot fugging sucked.
Don’t know why Letterman was angry at Leno in the first place. Leno begged for the job and Letterman thought he was owed the job. Pinheads at NBC picked Leno… If anything, Letterman should be angry at the pinheads, not Leno. PS: I feel that Letterman is great and Leno shtick was old when Johnny retired.
Conan is a complete idiot. Why do people stick up for him? There’s nothing funny there. He looks like and acts like a Beavis or Butthead, just as obnoxious as they are. He is so egotistical.
I’m sure they all are to various degrees, but his is so obvious. His ratings were low because a lot of people were like me, when he pranced out, we immediately changed the channel if we hadn’t already remembered to do it earlier. I say good riddance and I hope we don’t have to look at him again anytime soon. Jay is funny and Dave’s not bad either, but they didn’t need Conan in the Oprah ad. Why ruin it?
