At least it didn’t end at 2:45AM Eastern like the Directors Guild awards.
The Oscar race officially ended last night for Avatar. Time of death; 12:43AM this morning. Any hope, any puncher’s chance of a Picture/Director split was vaporized by the A.C.E. result. Three weeks ago, we had the possibility of one of the all-time epic dashes to the finish line. Now…it’s just ‘Slumdog’ redux. A fait accompli, and a snoozefest awaits on March 7. How the frak could this happen? I guess I underestimated the Everest-sized envy and hate toward Team Cameron. Congrats, Hurt Locker; you’re going to be the lowest-earning BP since 1955′s ‘Marty’ (which I believe made only $8m in its theatrical run).
Is there any doubt people’s minds as to who was going to win each award?
More importantly – With the Oscars bumping up to 10 films for best pic, is that even going to WORK this year? 10 was supposed to give more films chances (at least they claimed this was why); however, everyone knows it’s a 2-film race this year.
Inglorious Basterds is the best edited film here but it wasn’t one of the nominees, how do you think it’s inclusion in the Oscars will affect this race — will it hurt hurt locker, help Avatar or hopefully provide a win for the Basterds. The best picture of the year!
Can someone explain to me what the big deal about Hurt Locker is? In what way does it deserve to win an Oscar over all these other good movies?
Its a decent movie, but at no point did I find it more interesting or more suspenseful than one episode of Generation Kill. There was no plotline, not much acting and the movie had no apparent message.
Why is this movie recieving so much attention from awardshows?
Nice to see Hurt Locker winning another deserved award. Hope it wins big come the Oscars.
I wish more people would realize that editing in film has nothing to do with length or “cutting” scenes. You can have a 5-minute scene edited brilliantly and the same 5-minute scene edited into a mess. Let’s say you have 5 cameras simultaneously filming that scene. The art of editing more than anything else is how well the different shots from all the cameras are chosen and edited together to “tell the story” of that 5-minute scene for maximum impact and clarity. The writer and the director are the ones who primarily will decide when a scene or dialogue is removed from the film. The editor doesn’t decide what goes in the film’s story but functions more as the ultimate cameraman on the film. He gets to see everything the cameras shot and decides where the “eye” that sees the events of the film will finally be at any given moment within the footage available. Length and timing of the shots used is part of the artform but in more subtle ways, not in ways that will significantly alter the running time of the film. Of course he will also be called upon to find the right visual “bridge” between shots to make the film look seamless if the director does decide to cut scenes or dialogue.
GO “HURT LOCKER”!
Funny story, Summit either couldn’t afford or screwed up their table sitting so that Kathryn Bigelow had no place to sit, so Fox/Avatar invited her to sit with them when they heard she didn’t have a seat…ask anyone who was there.
Hurt Locker, didn’t deserve any Oscar, Best screen play should have been given to Inglorious Basterds and Best picture for Avatar.
Avatar, inglorious basterds and Up In the Air are better movies than Hurt Locker
Avatar, Inglorious Basterds and Up In the Air are better movies than Hurt Locker. They deserved the awards not hurt locker.
