UPDATE: The New York Times now says it’s linking to our article.
How dishonorable that The New York Times doesn’t properly credit us for our scoop last week, Summit Expressing “Very Preliminary” Interest In Miramax Name & Film Library, which was posted 3 full days ahead of the newspaper’s story that went online Sunday. We were first to break the news that Disney was entertaining bids for the Miramax name and library, and that Summit was expressing preliminary interest, and that the price is around $800 million (although the feeling is its actual worth is closer to $500M because studio library values have taken a hit as DVD/video has flattened.) And yet the NYT intends to charge for content that’s both late and borrowed. Sheesh!

yah nikki,
Seems like this is happening all too often.
did you see what happened with Zerohedge.com using Morgan Stanley information and calling it original? http://bit.ly/axjtrG
You need “TEAM FINKE” T-shirts so I can rep you while I cruise the town. haha
The national dailies are not in the business of reporting news anymore — NYTimes, LATimes, Chicago Trib — they are in the business of collecting news. Everything outsourced to sites like this now. Get over it. But you do good work, at least.
come on, nikki – rise above it. this whole “toldja”-thing of yours is too much. you’re #1. behave like it.
The imitators are always chasing your vapors. To your throng of loyal readers, it’s cute in a pathetic way, but it’s understandable how it could be infuriating from your perspective when you work so hard to set the curve on major industry news only to go uncredited by hack fish-wrap rags.
Nikki, the NY Times morphed from a ‘flagship’ news source into a leftist-shill tabloid years ago. Meh.
You’d think that Harvey’s enraged screams of “IT’S MINE DAMMIT!” echoing across Manhattan would have clued them in earlier.
You got credit in there. They said you did the reporting on Summit.
get used to it, nikki. the “traditional” press has no respect for us online types. like the dinosaurs they are, they won’t even see their extinction coming.
Go get ‘em, Nikke! When will these obsolete news dinosaurs ever realize that they simply cannot compete with scrappy, internet-savvy sites like this one???
They’ve been busted before so it wouldn’t be the first time.
However, it’s possible they independently sourced the story, but you still beat them by three days. If that’s the case, they should just keep an eye on your site and give you credit when they use your leads.
That said, I support the NY Times paywall (although I’m not confident their specific model will work). They’ve been ripped off by many scrapping sites and it’s time to compensate original content.
Nikke – You might in the future consider a mix of free and pay (using a few lines or title to tease people into paying for an article). However, your costs are not likely at the level of the NY Times so might never have the need.
splinter you are an idiot. The second nikki charges is the second people move elsewhere and she loses eyeballs. Get a clue. The internet is a constantly shifting free-for-all orgy and always will be.
yes, i’m an idiot but not for the reasons you suggest. But there’s a long list so close enough.
There are sites that have put up 100% subscriber paywalls and survived. Others have done a mix of free with some articles for pay (WSJ). Newspapers, having high costs to investigate, research, etc., need to do this to survive. They cannot generate enough revenues from ads to cover their bloated costs.
So, George, I assume reading isn’t one of your strong points, I merely mentioned Nikke MIGHT in the future consider a mix of free and pay. It does two things, brings in money AND reduces theft/scrapping. Most articles could be free, others have a few lines displayed, but need to pay to see the rest.
Does she need to do that? Ask her.
Will she lose all customers? No, but maybe some. Agree most free, with some juicy stuff for pay. But up to deadline, not you or me.
Finally, sorry george, the “everything is free” internet is making room for more monetization. You’ll see more and more paywalls or required subscriptions in the coming years. There will still be plenty of free, but more will be pay. And, its a good thing as content creators, whether journalists, artists, inventors, need to be compensated for their works.
When they launch the pay for news service it’s lights out.
Nikki isn’t the first reporter the Times has borderline plagiarized, and Lord knows she won’t be the last.
The naked truth is the NYT sucks, like most newspapers. I believe it was the late Michael Chrichton who said newspapers would dissappear due to their own stupidity. They made themselves obsolete with mediocre coverage, too much opinion and too little information and their ridiculous sense of entitlement. The internet and reality finally caught up with them, and they have not even realized it. They liked to think they’re “too good”. The fact of the matter is that most newspapers suck, are plain stupid and you can find 99% of what they carry better, faster and smarter anytime on the web. Who actually reads and gives a rat’s ass about the newspapers’ entertainment coverage, for instance? Websites such as yours have made them more than obsolete. Of course they will never recognize your role. They’ll try to ignore you, and pretend you don’t exist or mention you in passing as if your were a curiosity. That’s what mediocre people do when there’s something that has put them out of business and they don’t want to acknowledge. Quite frankly, screw the times and the “moronic press complex”.
“……..completely neglected to mention his (Fred Silverman’s) relationship to Ben Silverman”
Is there a relevant relationship? So far as I know the relationship they share is the spelling of their last name and having worked for NBC. Curious coincidence but not essential news.
This is the new desperation plan to Save News, Nikki: Rip off the Internet. It’s happened to me more than once. Latest example:
Ahem.

Keep pointing it out. Help erode their already near-gone trust!
Love your site! The first thing I thought of when I saw the NYT story was “Hmm… didnt Nikki report that?”
