EXCLUSIVE: Paramount Pictures today will clinch has clinched its deal with Tom Cruise to reprise his role as Ethan Hunt in Mission Impossible 4. Cruise will produce the film with J.J. Abrams. They are looking for a director, but screenwriters Josh Applebaum and Andre Nemec are already attached to write the script. The intention is to make this Cruise’s next film and start shooting by summer for a Memorial Day 2011 weekend release. And I can definitively say that, despite chatter to the contrary, MI4 will be very much of an Ethan Hunt pic with Cruise as the main character.
Gee, remember the bad old days when Cruise and Paramount parent company Viacom chairman Sumner Redstone were on the outs? Guess that old Hollywood saying is as true as ever: “I’ll never work with him again — until I need him.” I hear Paramount is really excited about relaunching the franchise, which has grossed over $1.4 billion globally. “Tom and J.J. are great talents and we are excited to be working with them to re-launch this legendary franchise,” said Paramount Pictures Chairman & CEO Brad Grey. I’m told the MI4 deal has been restructured (i.e. brought down to earth) to make it more like recent Industry tentpole deals where everyone shares the risk. MI4 is being co-financed by David Ellison’s Skydance Productions. Cruise just completed the film Knight and Day for 20th Century Fox with a July 2nd release date. It has James Mangold directing and Cameron Diaz co-starring.

Congratulations on getting all of these scoops, Deadline.com! Lately, I’ve been visiting your site more than any other movie news site.
Just learned today MI4 is going to Canada instead of shooting in Hollywood. Come on let’s find a way to keep the work here.
You go Tom Cruise! I still love you!
Your mission, should you decide to accept it, is to not LOL at the idea of Tom Cruise doing yet another Mission Impossible.
Are they gonig backwards in the Cruise M:I timeline, or picking it up where we last left off?
Fuck him. Oh, did you want a more thoughtful mature response to this news story? Fuck him twice.
Well said!
MI3 did make a lot of money at the box office, but it cost too much to make it a really profitable film when you calculate what was spent on development, production, and prints and advertising. Another Mission Impossible film could do well, as long as they can make it for a reasonable cost.
Anyway, I think Cruise will be happier back at Paramount, he’s bound to do better there than he did as an owner of United Artists. He has to.
AWESOME news!
Can’t wait for this!
Just thinking earlier with the Nolan / Superman story how for years I used to go to sites like Aint it cool etc for real scoops – now it is all about DHD – every site I used to visit before this one now features stories broken on DHD! Pretty amazing guys!
As for MI4 – loved loved loved MI3 so if Abrams is back (even just as producer) then I’m in. Hopefully it will keep the same team from MI3 there was great chemistry and a more even balance ie not just the Tom Cruise show ala MI2!
Agreed. MI3 rocked. Can’t wait for MI4. Wonder who the bad guy/gal will be? PS Hoffman was pretty good in the last one.
tom is one of my idol~even he married,i still support him
I will see a Tom Cruise movie way before I would ever see a Cameron Diaz movie. God, she’s ugly, is a terrible actress with no charisma and has an annoying personality. Sorry that I’m gonna miss this one.
NOOO!!!
Aren’t they still looking for a screenwriter for the 3rd one?
Whatever they do please NO 3D!
I’m a big fan of Cruise and the man knows how to make a good movie. I’m excited to hear about this news.
For some reason I’ve seen all three, yet I couldn’t tell you what this “franchise” is about, nor describe a single personality trait of Ethan Hawke or whoever TF Cruise “plays” in it.
I guess “Tom Cruise hides behind beards to do something stupid.” Wait, now I get it. They’re autobiographical.
Um, they don’t have a script yet for this expensive action film and they intend to film this in five months? Wow. Just goes to show neither Paramount nor Cruise gives a damn about the quality of the script in these things which is in line with every Mission Impossible movie having been so terribly “written” (if you want to call it that).
Meanwhile, why doesn’t Cruise do a movie in which he’s required to actually act? Oh wait. Of course. He can’t. The only characters he can play are desexualized action boys or assholes. Anything else and it becomes obvious he’s no actor. No matter how many real actors he pays a fortune to co-star with him (Hopkins, Hackman et al).
This piece of garbage will bomb.
Actually, those writers have been working on a script since last June. Hopefully it’s more or less in place by now.
As long as Abrams is involved, this sounds great! I just really, really hope that he does manage to work Leonard Nimoy and/or Peter Graves from the original series into the plot, as he mentioned he’d like to do. It should be easy enough to undo the disgrace piled upon Graves’ character in the original movie with a quick explanation like, “Gee, Jim, it’s too bad that guy we let use your name after you retired turned out to be a traitor,” or something to that effect!
Did you see Magnolia? That he was Oscar nominated for??? Rain Man and the First Mission Impossible was amazing. He couldn’t have been in the biz this long if he was a complete joke.
Cruise was brilliant in “Magnolia,” and very funny in “Tropic Thunder.”
Timmy, Cameron is really worried now because you think she is a terrible actress.
I will no longer pay to see a Tom Cruise movie. If one happens to be playing on HBO which I already pay for, fine but when it comes to seeing them in theaters, I’m afraid that bed has been made and Tommy needs to continue lying in it…pun intended.
What do you think Tom Cruise’s current up-front price is? Or is most of this backended…
I’m just glad they’re not rebooting it.
I will see any T Cruise movie anytime. About anything! He has never failed to entertain me. What he worships, who he marries, what he does in his spare time is not important to me..He is an entertainer and a damn good one. He has been robbed of the Oscar more than once. You go Tom..we will be there.
What a pleasant way to wake up (it’s 5 am here). Excellent news, M:I III is one of the best movie thrillers ever made.
Mr. Cruise is simply amazing!!! I am a HUGE Tom Cruise admirer. I own all his films and he is a talented actor. If you want to see acting at it’s best watch him in “Magnolia”(1999).
Stoked about this. Love this series. Glad Abrams isn’t directing. Not because I don’t dig him. I do. But I like how they get a differnet director for each film. Hope they get Fincher, Romanek, or even Raimi.
I don’t think it’s a given that Abrams isn’t directing. This announcement says he is producing and “they are looking for a director” which is more or less the same thing Paramount said when the Star Trek reboot got announced. I wouldn’t be surprised if Abrams ends up directing this. It could fit in to his schedule if the release date is really set for 2011 since Star Trek 2 isn’t supposed to come out until 2012. I for one would like to see him return, thought he made a really entertaining movie with MI3.
Since his inane outbursts on TV and his ranting about Scientology, I just can’t look at Tom Cruise ever again without provoking disdain towards him. I despise this guy, and everything he stands for. You have to pay me to see his movies. Wait… I can’t be paid much enough to see his movies.
We have freedom of religion in this country, can’t you respect other people’s religions? Tom is a great actor and a great action star. Give the guy a break. Are you that unforgiving?
That sound you hear is everyone over in Marathon groaning, especially after the cakewalk that was MI3! But to be honest, they should be happy, another movie to add to their roster (they don’t have many right now).
I am sorry but it has disgusted me since we were students together at USC the way David Ellison has been allowed to buy his way into the industry using his daddys money despite having zero talent.
Like when his dad gave him a 40mil graduation present: Fly Boys, well we know how that turned out
The guy is barely 26 and he is co-financing the MI4, ok I get it all t takes is a check book
