EXCLUSIVE: Anyone in Hollywood gnashing their teeth over how much 18-year-old Taylor Lautner has going on right now — well, here’s one more film project to chew on. (We know you’re complaining he hasn’t yet proven he can carry a film by himself, yet is on a salary trajectory rarely seen for someone so young. But the studios are still in hot pursuit. And it’s not our fault he’s in such demand…) Lionsgate won the bidding with the “most aggressive offer” for the Verve client Shawn Christensen‘s script Abduction with WME- and Management 360-repped Lautner attached. But that’s not all: we hear the screenplay sold for nearly $1 million in this sluggish spec script market. And the Twilight Saga teen’s new Tailor Made production company is producing as an equal partner with Roy Lee and The Gotham Group. (Tailor Made also is a producer on Universal’s Stretch Armstrong.) Here’s what else sources are telling us; in order to make Lautner’s July availability, Lionsgate will hurry to select a director and get a script polish by then, or Tailor Made will still produce but hire another actor for the lead.
Verve sent out the script to studios the night of February 10th – by 9 AM the next morning, 2 studios were ready to bid when the auction got going. The script has Lautner playing a teen who has long felt disconnected from his parents, and figures out why. That unleashes a chain of violent events and enters Bourne territory. Considering he just got on the Hollywood radar because of the Twilight Saga (imagine, he was almost recast before New Moon) and just days ago blew out the candles on his 18th birthday cake, Lautner with his 8-pack abs is the newest and youngest action star in a dizzying volume of movie deals made over recent weeks. He’s already the lead in two major studio superhero franchises — Universal’s Stretch Armstrong and Paramount’s Max Steel. As one of Deadline Hollywood’s more astute commenters noted: “Don’t hate the player. Hate the game.”

We can hate and speculate until LETHAL WEAPON 5 comes out, but the reality is this project, and many of the other Taylor-saddled projects, will probably never see the light of day. I’ve been around long enough to know that Hollywood is purely a reactive,heat-seeking business, and most frequently a state of mind.
Well put.
The “youthening” of movies continues with the pursuit of this kid who hasn’t proven himself at all. But, Hollywood more than ever is trying to catch that lightning in a bottle by sewing up the next big thing, and Lautner is IT at the moment. The truth is that this kid needs to continue to cut his teeth in smaller roles and smaller movies before he gets ground up in the talent killing machine. No problem, however, as long as there is money to be made in the short term, this is the way things will be run.
I read this script and was disappointed. It’s shallow and extremely contrived. I am happy for The Verve guys but that’s all. What the hell is going on out there? Do people know quality anymore? People who are running the town wouldn’t know a well written script if it hit them in the face. Go see SHUTTER ISLAND and you know what I’m talking about. Garbage!!!!!!! Rescue us from this world of creative mediocrity. Someone please rescue us!
Shutter Island is “garbage”? That’s just like your opinion, man.
They can’t. They’re all at the Bob McKee seminar waiting 72 hours to take a leak and when they get out they’re going to begin outlining how to “reboot” CASABLANCA.
That’s funny.
Hasn’t Stretch Armstrong been around for like, 7-10 years in development? I get why Transformers did well based on nostalgia from the geekdom, plus that special Michael Bay touch, etc…but who waxes nostalgic for their Stretch Armstrong doll? I seem to remember it being the one toy you actively tried to rip art and abuse. You could almost see your GI Joe looking sorry for old Stretch as we’d find new and grizzly ways to violate him.
Who is the audience? Or is this a great excuse to have Taylor be shirtless in the whole movie? Maybe the Twihard girls and gay men will be enough of an audience to make it profitable? But I can’t see one straight dude waiting in line for this one.
OK, just give us the Top Ten Teens and what they’re “worth”- from Taylor & Robert to Zac & Chace — and then let’s move on to something else.
Please?
By way of perspective, when he was shooting “Superman” in 1977, someone asked Marlon Brando, who was earning three million dollars for ten days’ work on the picture, what made him think he was worth that much. Brando replied, “Because somebody will pay it.”
Go Taylor!
None of you, predicting Taylor’s failure or inability to carry a movie, have a 14 year old daughter. Mine with the help of her little sister got my husband to take them to see Valentine’s Day (an inappropriate movie for their age group) just because he was in it.
go Taylor!
For the people that have been able to read the Script, may I ask you where you read it please? I’d like to take a look. Thanks Everyone.
