Now that his career is resurrected from the ashes thanks to Darren Aronofsky and The Wrestler, Mickey Rourke is deservedly hot again and in demand. Currently, he’s being courted by Millennium Films and Lionsgate to join the remake of Conan The Barbarian, titled just Conan, which is the Marcus Nispel-directed reinvention of the Robert E. Howard creation. Rourke is negotiating to play Corin, the father of Conan who’s played by Jason Momoa. At the same time, Rourke is negotiating for the Tarsem Singh-directed War of the Gods and the part of King Hyperion, the ruler of Ancient Greece who does battle with the divines. Henry Cavill also stars.
Conan begins shooting in Bulgaria in late March and War of the Gods begins April 7th, so it is possible he might need to make a choice between the 2 projects. Both offers come as Rourke is now being seen in trailers for Iron Man 2 in the role of Ivan Vanko/Whiplash, the villain who goes mano a mano against Robert Downey Jr’ s Tony Stark. The fervor for Rourke is a good lesson to remember for all of those actors testing for the role of Captain America and bristling about the low paycheck. Reps for Rourke, who was coming off an Oscar-nominated turn in The Wrestler, went through a bare-knuckle negotiation on Iron Man 2, with Marvel initially offering him just $250,000. But the buzz? Priceless.

See. There is hope for Charlie Sheen after all.
Also Mickey graciously thanked ICM agent David unger for resurrecting his career. David is a sweet heart and total professional, im happy for both of them
Mickey Rourke has damaged his face so much with fighting and then bad cosmetic surgery I can’t bare to watch him. He is very talented but looks like he was in a bad auto accident or fire.
He can do both movies. He will probably only work on the Conan movie for 2 weeks cuz its not a huge role.
how much did mickey get for iron man 2?
Any other ‘Dawn of War’ casting news? Freida Pinto signed on yesterday and I’m curious who else they are looking at.
So King Hyperion had a lot of face work done? Yikes, Rourke is just to creepy for words, he looks like the Cat Lady.
Does any of the star actors in Iron Man 2 got equity in the film, like Relativity normally does?
Buzz is what brought him back into the spotlight. The Wrestler did not. That movie was dreadful. While I don’t think he’s a bad actor at all, his performance did NOT deserve the Oscar nod that year.
Sorry, to each there own and all but to say he didn’t deserve the Oscar nod??? He deserved the AWARD! The movie was a master work in showing the raw truth about living (or dying) with the choices we make. He couldn’t have been better and the movie was flawless.
How you can say The Wrestler didn’t bring Mickey Rourke back into the spotlight is beyond me you fuckwit. The movie was great and so was his performance. So there!
CROM!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Would Darren A. have noticed Mickey R. had it not been for Sin City?
Sin City resurrected his career dumbass
Oh yeah, EVERYONE was talking about that great performance and not The Wrestler.
Thank you! Thought I was hte only one who remembered. But the Wrestler was the one that proved he could CARRY the flick. Good call.
Mickey resurrected Mickey. He showed up, remembered his lines & didn`t bump into the furniture,
Sin City was great but it didn’t resurrect his career it simply brought him to the attention of directors who were willing to cast him. No studio or producer was beating a path to his door after Sin City because if they were then the makers of The Wrestler wouldn’t have had so much trouble financing the movie. Dumbass.
mickey rourke is a great actor…im goin to see iron man 2 simply for the fact hes gonna be whiplash
Michael Heister – More like if what if Darren A. hadn’t seen ANGEL HEART, DINER, YEAR OF THE DRAGON, 8 1/2 WEEKS, DOUBLE TEAM, etc.
That last one was a joke. Though to shake your scarcasm even more, you forgot ONCE UPON A TIME IN MEXICO. Be consistent people.
Besides I want ST. VINCENT. Where is my Walter Hill/Mickey Rourke hitman religious melodrama?!?
Plastic surgery or not, his face, his look, has character. He looks like he has been through alot and his acting has benefited from it. Im glad that he doesnt look “pretty” and the roles he is being offered is a reflection of his “look” and the life he has lead. He is a great actor, give him a break.
DOUBLE TEAM!!!! I love that film! A shame that Tsui Hark never caught on as a director over here. Had it starred other talent besides Jean Claude Van Damme and Dennis Rodman, it probably would have done much better, because it really wasn’t a bad film at all.
okay, i wish I was joking but here’s the thing – I REALLY liked ONCE UPON A TIME IN MEXICO. I know, I know. But it’s just one of those things. LOL
Thanks for the casting news, i look forward more to these stories than corporate deals/affairs. Anything controversial or exciting happening in the pilot market these days? There hasn’t been much on here this season.
The fact that there’s a disagreement over what resurrected Rourke’s career suggests that his career wasn’t resurrected so much as merely given attention again.
Awesome. I didn’t like the casting choice of Jason Momoa for Conan, but throwing in more casting like Rourke could make this a good movie.
As if he was born for this role….lol
This is huge for Mickey. He’s one of the greatest actors of our time and hotter than ever. The comic book audience will be reveling in these two roles, especially with him coming off of Iron Man 2. Tarsem is an awesome director. I cannot wait to see his collaboration with Mickey in ‘War of the Gods’!
i’d love to see him in a love story. Not comedy but something relevent, corruption in politics, ethics in quesiton, May December romance, but reversed, not another comic book character, please.
Good call! Never thought of that. He can pull off about any role so a good romance could be just the follow up to Gods or Conan.
he’s in a romantic movie called ‘Passion Play’ they just wrapped – rumor is that it’s great…
forgot to mention him in “8 1/2 weeks”, and “White Orchid” is a stunner.
..that`s Wild Orchid to you son.
Don’t forget Home Boy!~
Its also “9 -1/2 weeks. not 8 -1/2 weeks….. dope
Mickey Rourke is a great actor and a gentleman. I worked with him and he was nothing less than professional. Great dude!! Go get’em Mickey! You deserve all the kudos you get!!
“Besides I want ST. VINCENT. Where is my Walter Hill/Mickey Rourke hitman religious melodrama?!?”
Starts shooting in May.
So both of these films may be out OP
Mickey Rourke is an amazing talent. The contempt contained in Marvel’s offer of $250,000.00 is so instructive. Now that graphic novels are in such ascendency as sources for major films — and the smaller, human dramas have been driven to the fringes, when they exist at all — one would think the fattened coffers of studios could be parceled out with greater equanimity to those who can elevate their product. After all, the new Hollywood has left many an artist out in the cold.
that’s crap, Gianni is such a nice guy. Have you ever even met him? Stop playa hatin!
All I read about is what film resurrected his career. How about a nod to “Homeboy”, which ruined it.
Hope he does Walter Hill’s film Instead. Great cast. Gong Li Forrest Whitaker, Ray Winestone.
Is it just me or Mikey looks really bad these days? Maybe he should try fishing.
