Twentieth Century Fox has hired Steven Puri to become a VP under production president Emma Watts. Puri had been an exec for Alex Kurtzman and Roberto Orci, whose TV deal is newly at Fox but are DreamWorks-based for features. Puri developed the Jon Favreau-directed Cowboys and Aliens, along with the still-percolating pics Deep Sea Cowboys, Atlantis Rising and Racing Dreams.

Though I can’t say I understand Steven’s decision to go to Fox, he’s a great guy who is most welcome at a studio that needs a friendly face. Question though is, who is picking up the comedy slack over there? You can’t leave it all to John Fox whose taste is questionable at best.

Steven is a lovely guy and will play well at the Fox game. And FYI, John Fox is getting more done over there than everyone else combined… he gets comedy in a way that very few executives do.

Steven is creative and visionary. I worked with him at Lead Am a few years ago and was amazed at his ability to capture the pulse of audiences. Let’s hope Fox will let him work on serious scripts, he certainly has the potential to make them Oscar winners!

I worked with this geek at Red Wagon. This is a weird hire for Fox as Steven knows very few writers and has zero agent, filmmaker, and actor relationships. Moreover, he’s in his mid 40′s and thinks he’s smarter than everyone else. Bizarre.

What exactly has steven accomplished that got him this gig? What movies did he make at K/O? Seems odd that Watts wouldn’t try to round out her very immature team with someone more seasoned.
Anyone with negative stuff to say about Puri clearly doesn’t know the guy. I’ve known him for years and have worked with him a couple of times and they don’t come any smarter. Nice move, Emma.
