UPDATES Oscar Spoilers, Part 1
The death of John Hughes last year touched Hollywood in a way that only a very small number of talent can. In addition, Academy Of Motion Picture Arts & Sciences Tom Sherak and Oscarcast producer Bill Mechanic both worked with Hughes. As did this year’s hosts Steve Martin and Alec Baldwin. So there was no way because of these personal connections they’d relegate him to just a brief clip within the usual montage of people who’ve passed. (Not that the other dead people didn’t deserve their own tributes, too.) Instead, the Oscars are planning a separate and special tribute to the writer-director-producer, complete with film and cast members. Steve Martin, of course, did the classic Planes Trains & Automobiles with Hughes, while Baldwin made the less well received She’s Having A Baby. But I’m surprised that Alec has such fond memories. Years ago I did an interview with Baldwin, and he railed against Hughes for cutting most of his storyline from that pic. But time heals all wounds, I guess.

I’m not sure why you are surprised that Baldwin is now wanting to honor Hughes. It’s the American way to publicly thrash someone, but when they die, talk about how amazing they were. Look at the media’s coverage of Michael Jackson before his death, then after.
They relegated Ingmar Bergman and Paul Newman to just a couple brief clips within the usual montage of people who’ve passed. Now I’m not saying that Hughes doesn’t deserve a special shout… I’m just saying.
He deserves it. The man directed a generation. THE BREAKFAST CLUB was the cinematic CATCHER IN THE RYE for its time. I’m probably sounding melodramatic but for those of us that are apart of this generation, tis the truth.
I read his last spec TICKETS. Sad to see that will never be made.
RIP John Hughes.
John was a fabulous talent and a good friend to many people in our Industry. Alec may have been momentarily irked at what ended up on the cutting room floor, but I’m sure his loyalty and belief in the friendship prevailed over the long haul.
Can you provide a link to that interview, or summarize the plotline? IMDb fails to make reference to the plotline being cut, and my lame google skills failed to unearth it.
As it’s one of my favorite movies, I’d love to hear about the plotline and why it was cut.
Thank you!
He will be missed
Very well deserved. John Hughes is one of the greatest filmmakers of the 20th century. He consistently got career best performances out of his actors. Steve Martin, John Candy, Anthony Michael Hall, Molly Ringwald, Matthew Broderick, Jeffrey Jones, and Judd Nelson (in fact the entire cast of “The Breakfast Club) all did their best work under Hughes’s direction. He is also responsible for having Jennifer Connelly wear that unforgettable white tank top in “Career Opportunities.” That alone makes this tribute all the more deserving.
Of all the great artists that have passed over the years, is this really the one to single out on a show which supposedly focuses on artistic excellence?
No disrespect intended but he never made one “great” movie.
Except for how much Johnny Carson hated Joan Rivers … to the grave.
