EXCLUSIVE: The last time Paul Reiser created a sitcom that was picked up by NBC, it was the major hit Mad About You and ran from 1992 all the way to 1999 on the network. So it’s understandable if NBC is feeling somewhat nostalgic for Reiser’s product. Now I’ve learned that last night the network picked up a Warner Bros pilot that was written by and stars Paul Reiser who also will executive produce. There’s no official announcement about this yet. But the deal for this single-camera filmed series is said to be “big”.

Hey NBC,
I hear Bill Cosby is available.
And it might be time to reboot MCMILLAN & WIFE too.
Now I’m feeling sorry for Paul Reiser, because the NBC he used to work for is definitely not the same NBC it is now.
Also there’s the threat that if it isn’t #1 immediately, he’ll be replaced by Jay Leno.
Maybe he’s doing MY TWO GRANDDADS.
Oh gosh, really? Hopefully, he’s refitted his toupee.
Didn’t we see Paul R. sitting at the “table of comedians” in that scene in ‘Funny People’?? Did he look ‘TV Ready’ to anybody?
…oh wait… I forgot: I’M the only person who saw ‘Funny People’
I saw Funny People. It was a really, really good movie about a bunch of comedian friends and their lifestyles. It was one of the laziest, least meaningful movies about life/death/and cancer a person could make.
So NOW we know why he wrote that blog on The Huffington Post defending his buddy Jay Leno and the Tonight Show debacle.
Aside from the fact that milquetoast comics past their expiration date stick together.
Good, I really like Paul Reisner. Been gone too long. It should be PR and Larry David in a sitcom. That I would watch.
Hold on “Erk”, I too saw “Funny People”, in fact, I was wondering who the other person in the theater that day was?
I was suprised Reiser wanted to be in that scene. It was like being named to the Catskills hall of fame sponsored by Super Grip Polident. I literally heard the flapping of dentures or perhaps that was some really great foley work?
Now NBC is going to give him a half hour of prime time? Maybe it’s time for a re-boot of “Hello, Larry” while they’re at it?
Is NBC using Les Moonves’ playbook to crawl back to number one? CBS brought aging stars in the late 90s to help start their rise to number one.
So that’s why he did his big “Jay’s such a good guy” article during the late night wars. What a kiss up. I’m shocked, shocked to find there’s gambling going on here!
That is fresh! FRESH!
Is this part of the age discrimination lawsuit?
NBC has to give Paul Reiser a show?
Hes so 1990s. I never found this guy. I couldn’t watch his sitcom because it was lame, to me. I guess somebody out there likes his sense of humor.
I suppose if his daughter is played by Hayden P. and his son by Chace C., they’ll have a hit on their hands!
And didn’t Reiser NOT get a bunch of pilots he wrote and starred in? Just downright sad what’s going on at NBC these days.
Or he could be pitching a sequel to Mad About You and the title of the new show should be “Mad at NBC and rightfully so for canceling my show to begin with 10 years ago”
This smells of desperation. NBC is not the same, Furious D is correct. However, the country and population is not the same. It’s older, less wealthy, and more desiring an uncomplicated good time than “edgy.”
I doubt Reiser is the answer. NBC is so screwed up it can only get out by being bold: going for the only underserved audience out there: men. And tapping the USA talent around Burn Notice and Psych to produce action-oriented, male appealing shows.
Epic fail.
He and Helen hunt really cleaned up on MAY huh? She had a few years of movie stardom so I am sure those paychecks help support her now but he really never has to work again with all the money he made and so far he hasn’t worked much since then. I am curious as to what this pilot is about. Maybe it’s a mash up of all of his best selling book series.
I guess NBC has Don Johnson’s phone number…
Reiser: smart guy, never funny, but I do wish him well. On a related note:
Why do those fucking retards at NBC continue to take a non-comedic approach to comedy?
See the stiffs that ran both the network & studio. Emeril, Breckin Meyer…sorry, I don’t have 4 hours to continue listing…
So I guess that Zucker & Co. never saw the last couple of years of “Mad About You”?
It genuinely sucked!
The show went right into the toilet with the story arc that was about Paul [the character's] almost affair. Not an actual affair, he just had thoughts of one. That wretched story line was undoubtedly the idea of Reiser’s wife, who’s a psychologist.
The show never righted itself & went rapidly down in the ratings.
The finale was anti-climactic & excruciatingly boring!
A fun Mad About You drinking game: Take a swig every time HH rummages through the kitchen cabinets.
I demand that B. Real resign from whatever job he has b/c he used the word “retard.”
Reiser is a classy guy. He doesn’t do anything half-assed and has a great skill as a comic and writer. Certainly more original than the comments and jabs noted here. Yes we get it, he’s older but that doesn’t mean too old. Since when has a comic’s age been an issue and hindered his ability to be funny. George Burns, Milton Berle, Mel Brooks, Woody Allen, etc. etc. Comedy doesn’t discriminate. Jerry Seinfeld, Bill Maher, Lettereman, Richard Lewis, Robin Williams and more — they all came up together and are leaders defined and redifined comedy for their own generation and influenced the ones in the next. Don’t be so ignorant. He deserves the benefit of the doubt.
I can’t believe how cruel and cynical most of you people are. I was a big fan of Mad About You. It was well written and I was quite disappointed that Sony has decided not to release the last four seasons of the show on DVD. I also enjoyed his books, “Couplehood” and “Babyhood”
I wish Paul Reiser all the success in the world. Welcome back!
I am thrilled to see Paul Reiser again. His new show is actually about him. He is playing himself. The script is very funny he cleverly plays on his age and the fact that he is a formerly successful actor. Should be great
