EXCLUSIVE: While (500) Days of Summer didn’t get the Best Picture nod as some expected, good things keep happening for those involved. Zooey Deschanel has just committed to star in an HBO half-hour pilot that will be based on I’m With the Band: Confessions of a Groupie, the Pamela Des Barres’ memoir of bed-hopping with musicians and movie stars in the late 1960s. Deschanel will be executive producer with her longtime manager Sarah Jackson of Seven Summits, and Tim Gibbons, an executive producer of HBO’s Curb Your Enthusiasm. Des Barres bragged about her bedroom experiences with the likes of Mick Jagger, Led Zeppelin guitarist Jimmy Page and actor Don Johnson. But along the with excitement of rolling with famous rockers, there was also the emptiness and heartbreak of being demeaned and discarded by stars once the next pretty young thing came along. That turf was also covered by Cameron Crowe in Almost Famous. Zooey’s series is supposed to be a dramedy.

You obviously have never read Pamela’s book, “I’m With The Band” otherwise you wouldn’t have mistaken “slutting around” with loving music and the artist’s that produce it. BIG difference.
Maybe you’re jealous because you’ve only slept around with plumbers and all night mini-mart attendents??
There’s a certain passion that made the earlier years of rock and roll a magical experience that cannot be repeated, and that passion was demonstrated by the sirens and muses we know affectionately as “groupies”. Thank God that Miss Pamela was part of it, because only someone with her sweet soul and charisma could capture so well the essence of life as it was in the music scene in the 60′s and 70′s, and share them with us. It’s a part of our cultural history – a coming of age.
I feel sorry for those who consider her behavior slutty, and her writings as bragging, because they miss the truth of her spirit. It was anything BUT sleazy, but there was no shortage of wildfire either. She didn’t merely have sex with famous musicians, she LOVED these artists, and FELT their art, and had to return to them the passion they incited.
I’ve waited EONS for her story to finally be depicted. It’s more than sexual conquest and hero worship. WAY WAY more.
Congratulations, Zooey! And congratulations Pamela!
Even before I saw Pamela’s own comment, I found myself thinking the same things as she expresses here: this piece (not to mention some commentators) have her and her book all wrong.
Victoria notes that I signed up I’M WITH THE BAND for the publisher William Morrow. I remember reading the manuscript and thinking, This gets to the heart of rock and roll–not the music per se but the life. Pamela dispels the mystery while creating mystery of her own. Her book is one of the most uplifting stories there is, the ultimate girl-power book, more about the liberation of the mind and spirit than of the body. No one took advantage of Pamela. No one could. She was too much her own woman. Which is what one hopes Zooey Deschanel will be in playing this role. There’s only one Miss Pamela. You can trust her with your life, as she apparently is willing to trust you with hers.
Love Miss Pamela! so this girl will not do her justice. She is a total predictable bore! and get over it, YOU are not a musician! ugh
