Last week, I wrote about a Universal Pictures/Illumination Entertainment deal to acquire the original Addams Family drawings by Charles Addams so Tim Burton could direct a stop-motion 3D animated film. Numerous Deadline readers thought the story was false based on an MTV.com “exclusive” report. I stand by my story. The deal happened. Deadline hardly needs MTV.com to become a self-appointed truth squad. That site should stick to its strength –which appears to be aggregating, and all the breathless scoops that come from surface-scratching celebrity junket interviews. As for my own cynical readers, I figure you are the same ones who sent nyah-nyah missives when Neil Patrick Harris denied my report that he would be in the song and dance number that opened the Academy Awards. (He rehearsed with Martin Short, but the latter bowed out due to a personal emergency). You guys should learn to trust me.
UPDATE: MTV.com and I buried the hatchet.

I find the snark factor to be heavier here than the whine factor — which is the reason many come here, for a good snarking (snarkeling?). Re: NPH at Oscars — what he said (on Twitter) was: “I will not be performing a duet with Martin Short to open the Oscars.” A bit of misdirection there, but true!
This note makes you look incredibly immature and discredits your validity as a writer.
There’s really no where for this increasingly snarky and juvenile reporting style to go. It’s going to be a sad date-stamp on the rocky economic and transitional era we’re now in; where fear and insecurity made us lesser people. This period will come to an end, and so will petty, back-biting ‘journalism’ as the prevailing style. But it’s sad all the same. Liked you better at Variety Mike. Just sayin’…
You are a joke. MTV wrote that they reached out to Tim Burton’s people about your story and Burton’s people replied: “There is no truth to the story. Tim has not lined up any of his upcoming projects.” MTV did not demean you, and in fact went on to say: “The Addams Family” could very well be something that Burton will be working on in the near or far future, but there just haven’t been any decisions made yet. It seems that MTV was very professional and responsible in their reporting, but you are far from those standards. Get a life and read what’s being said based on professional journalism, instead of running amok like the lunatic you are.
SNAP!
MTV isn’t even nasty by on-line standards. Wait till you read the crap some of the movie bloggers put out, and then their followers all chime in. Guess you didn’t get much feedback at Variety. Fasten your seatbelt.
Nikki and Mike,
This is off topic, but perhaps worth suggesting.
You know I am a big fan, and often submit comments
I think the number of comments often reflects the interest of your audience in any given post.
Have you ever thought of having a monthly post listing Top Ten stories of the preceding month based upon the number of comments received?
I would imagine that you already track this internally, but it might be fun for your readers. In fact, you might even someday have a reader driven favorite post of the year award based on this.
Food for thought?
Tom
You mean like your “exclusive” about the plans for the Oscars, which were taken verbatim from Adam Shankman’s interview on NPR’s Fresh Air the day before – and from a Comment post you deleted?
Keep up the good work. With time and good reporting, trust will establish itself.
Mike, why act like a snot? You’re a respected professional. Let it slide, proof is always in the pudding. Just cause you’re on Team Nikki doesn’t mean you need to act like that. It’s pretty depressing actually especially from you, someone I admire.
you make me have to double my depends somedays
