Beverly Hills, CA — The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences announced today that, should “The Hurt Locker” be announced as the recipient of the Best Picture award at Sunday’s ceremonies, only three of the picture’s producers will be present for the celebration. The fourth of the film’s credited producers, Nicolas Chartier, has been denied attendance at the 82nd Academy Awards® as a penalty for violating Academy campaigning standards.
Chartier had recently disseminated an email to certain Academy voters and other film industry figures in which he solicited votes for his own picture and disparaged one of the other contending films. Academy rules prohibit “casting a negative or derogatory light on a competing film.” The executive committee of the Academy’s Producers Branch, at a special session late Monday, ruled that the ethical lapse merited the revocation of Chartier’s invitation to the Awards.
The group stopped short of recommending that the Academy governors rescind Chartier’s nomination. If “The Hurt Locker” were to be selected as Best Picture, Chartier would receive his Oscar® statuette at some point subsequent to the March 7 ceremonies.
Academy Awards for outstanding film achievements of 2009 will be presented on Sunday, March 7, 2010, at the Kodak Theatre at Hollywood & Highland Center®, and televised live by the ABC Television Network beginning at 5 p.m. PT/ 8 p.m. ET. The Oscar presentation also will be televised live in more than 200 countries worldwide.

Chartier is a leader. We should dig into Acadamy Of Motion Picture Arts to see what they’ve done…..against their own ethical rules. Betcha they’d change their tune if they knew we were looking into their crud. This type of decision just makes AMPA look dumb to all of us let alone the public. To me–it looks like AMPA is the big bully on the playground. Time to beat ‘em up.
Taking it out on the little guy. Tom Sherak is a buffoon for letting this even rise to the level of ‘issue’. If he and the Academy were serious about this issue, they’d start smacking around the studios…which of course will never happen.
Banned for violating campaigning standards? Oh, the hypocricy. That’s rich.
Amazing. And Harvey Weinstein will sit in the front row. What a bunch of hypocrites.
Chartier knew the rules. He figured he could bend them in an act of desperation. Nobody likes getting their noses rubbed in the dirt. Especially on a grand scale.
Cameron deserves to win, not only for his creativity amd originality, but also for his box office muscle.
There seems to be a concerted effort to botch “Hurt Locker” on many levels…
How about showing some respect but more importantly giving credit were credit is due to the superbly talented Doris Day. An Academy Award for Ms. Day is long overdue and this neglect reflects poorly on the membership of the Academy.
That should teach those awful, enthusiastic producers what is acceptable and what isn’t. Can’t exactly blame them for not quite understanding the priorities. Which go something like this:
Being a convicted felon and fugitive – okay, no big deal. You have to consider the art and not the artist’s actions, however despicable they might be. It’s all about the work, it’s all about the movie.
