From Deadline|London editor Tim Adler: Piers Morgan, one of the judges on America’s Got Talent, has compiled his list of the top 100 UK celebrities. It’s clearly a case of the Mail On Sunday aping the Sunday Times’ influential Rich List. Except with showbiz names. And guess who Morgan has voted the biggest UK celebrity in the world? Why, none other than his boss Simon Cowell. Guess he knows which side his bread is buttered.
Morgan, who over here presents ITV’s top-rated chat show, edited the tabloid Daily Mirror and was showbiz editor of Murdoch’s The Sun. I won't repeat the several bags of manure he pours over the celebrities he’s listing. What’s more interesting are the celebs he’s left out. No Christian Bale? No Sir Ian McKellen? No Sting? Anyway, here are the names most relevant to Hollywood:
1. Simon Cowell (TV show judge)
2. David Beckham (Footballer)
6. Robert Pattinson (Actor)
7. Sir Paul McCartney (Musician)
8. Kate Moss (Model)
11. Jamie Oliver (TV cook)
12. Dame Helen Mirren (Actress)
15. Victoria Beckham (Fashion designer)
16. Keira Knightley (Actress)
18. Daniel Craig (Actor)
21. Sir Elton John (Musician)
26. Sacha Baron Cohen (Comedian)
27. Russell Brand (Comedian)
38. Kate Winslet (Actress)
42. Hugh Laurie (Actor)
44. Mick Jagger and Keith Richards (Musicians)
47. Clive Owen (Actor)
49. Sir Anthony Hopkins (Actor)
51. Ricky Gervais (Comedian)
52. Hugh Grant (Actor)
54. Gordon Ramsay (TV cook)
55. Sharon Osborne and Ozzy Osborne (TV show judge and musician)
56. Daniel Day-Lewis (Actor)
58. Sir Michael Caine (Actor)
61. Lord Lloyd Webber (Musician)
62. Daniel Radcliffe (Actor)
63. Emma Watson (Actress)
64. Nigella Lawson (TV cook)
65. Dame Judi Dench (Actress)
70. Jason Statham (Actor)
72. Rowan Atkinson (Comedian)
75. Colin Firth (Actor)
77. David Bowie (Musician)
78. Catherine Zeta-Jones (Actress)
79. Michael Sheen (Actor)
80. Eddie Izzard (Comedian)
81. Jude Law (Actor)
84. George Michael (Musician)
86. David Tennant (Actor)
87. Kate Beckinsale (Actress)
88. Kenneth Branagh (Actor)
89. Rod Stewart (Singer)
90. Naomi Campbell (Model)
95. Sienna Miller (Actress)
List is a bit hit and miss. Craig and Pattinson, yep, Craig is pretty much a rock star in the UK and Pattinson has the teen girls in his corner.
Clive Owen is a bit too high on the list, not sure why he’s ranked any higher than, say, Colin Firth.
This list is rubbish. Firstly, you said it, no Bale, no McKellen. Secondly, Cowell bigger than Beckham? In England?! Is he kidding? Even if he argues that Beckham is washed up, he can’t put Cowell ahead of half of that list. It just gets stupid around Radcliffe and Watson. I mean, they’re part of a franchise that basically feeds theaters in the UK whenever there’s an HP release. Poor Rupert Grint though. He never gets included in anything, even shabby lists.
Please feel free to send Rupert Grint to all those of us here in the States who love everything about him! We’ll put him at the top of any list he likes, long as he stays here with us!
as an englishman i can say this.
Piers Morgan is and always was a grade one twat.
Morgan is so out of touch its actually hilarious. He actually thinks if he says its so then its so. To be honest it’s not worth publishing this list, it’ll just encourage him.
To me the list read for the most like Morgan ranking his celebrity chums rather than a serious list of Britain’s Top Celebrities. There were far too many worthy names missed off it and some which I question their inclussion.
Yes the Grint thing is interesting – espeically given he is the only gifted actor of the 3 and the only one likely to still be acting in 10 years time.
What, no Gary Glitter??!!
Where is Gary Oldman? Sure, he’s been off the mark lately, but a few Harry Potter and two Batmans?
I only needed to get to 6 and 7 to know this list was rubbish: Sir Paul McCartney behind Robert Pattinson? Dream on. No one will even know who Pattinson is in five years other than teenage girls who find old issues of Tiger Beat when they’re cleaning out their closet after college. It’s called the Bobby Sherman/David Cassidy/Ryan Phillipe Syndrome.
I agree with a previous comment that this list is rubbish. Of course McCartney is important – only because he was a Beatle and is an astute businessman. But where is the name of Jonny Lee Miller? It belongs on the list, but not many others including the other Miller, Sienna.
Zeta Jones??? Really? If it were not for her husband’s influence in H’wood she would be Zero Jones. Was panned on Broadway. tsk!
Where is Jeremy Clarkson?
No Stephen Fry?!? Between his acting, hosting QI, and dominance of Twitter the guy is a national treasure.
Seriously? He lists Radcliffe and Watson but NOT J.K. Rowling? Sheesh.
No JK Rowling?
Really?
Where’s Thandie Newton?
Or Lenny Henry?
Ian McKellen?
Alexander McQueen? Yeah, he’s dead but he’s more popular than Mr. Bean.
Yeah, this is comprehensive.
They still won’t come to your parties, Tim.
Whatever.
considering rober pattinson’s new film remember me just opened to $8M on 2200 screens, i think you should move his name down to number 53, directly below hugh grant.
Piers Morgn is probably one of the most disliked people in England. As if anyone gives a shit about an arbitrary list he draws up.
God knows why people keep hiring him.
With the exception of Naomi Campbell that’s a spectacularly white list.
Neo-Nazi’s everywhere I’m sure are rejoicing. No one of any color, not even mildly sunburned from Spain, Italy or Greece.
Victoria Beckham fashion designer??? In what universe??
This list is a fool, as all lists.
sign beneath the post above mine published. Take Christian Bale and Ian McKellen and put Pattinson, Kate Beckinsale??
Christian Bale is South African, not British.
McCartney needs to be higher on that list!
Well heck, if we’re talking BRITISH celebs, where is Gerard Butler? Last time I checked, Scotland is considered part of Britain. In fact, I think he skipped the whole Scottish contingent of actors. Of course, snooty Piers Morgan probably doesn’t think they belong with English actors (not sure the Scots would disagree, though for entirely different reasons). And where’s Emma Thompson? Orlando Bloom? How about Helena Bonham Carter? She’s only starring in a huge movie with Johnny Depp. And how do you put Victoria Beckham as a fashion designer ahead of Stella McCartney? What an idiot. No way to take this list seriously.
