From Deadline|London editor Tim Adler: Producer Paul Webster tells me that Kristin Scott Thomas is to play the British Prime Minister’s press secretary in BBC Films’ Salmon Fishing in the Yemen which Bill Condon will start shooting in June. Apparently, Scott Thomas’ character is not a million miles away from that of Alastair Campbell, ex-PM Tony Blair’s feared master of spin. Simon Beaufoy, screenwriter of The Full Monty, has adapted Paul Torday’s bestselling novel. “It’s accessible, eccentric and very British,” Webster of Kudos Film and TV tells me. The UK Film Council is helping fund development.
This is a busy time for Webster. He’s also lining up a sequel to Eastern Promises, with Viggo Mortensen reprising his role as the Russian Mafia hitman. David Cronenberg will direct Steve Knight’s script. The Focus Features project hopes to go this winter. First, Mortensen and Cronenberg have to work together on the Sigmund Freud pic, The Talking Cure.
Also, Webster is almost done overseeing editing on Rowan Joffe’s reimagining of Graham Greene’s Brighton Rock, which Optimum/Studio Canal will release. Joffe’s imaginatively transplanted Greene’s original 1930s story into Mod era Brighton circa 1964. What’s clever is that was the last year when hanging was legal in Britain – something which the whole plot, er, hangs on. Helen Mirren stars opposite Sam Riley and Andrea Riseborough.

Not sure why an Eastern Promises sequel is necessary but I do love this cinematic partnership Mortensen/Cronenberg have developed. I get the sense an actor like Viggo is every filmmakers dream.
lol ur crazy man crazy mob movies need sequels look at the godfather and godfather 2… its prolly gonna be that good
An Eastern Promises sequel is all too needed. Too many questions left unanswered, to many compelling characters not fully fleshed out.
Eastern Promises 2. Now that is a sequel I’m looking forward to. The ending was killer.
Why do I always read it as Yalmon Fishing in the Semen?
Eastern Promise is a thinking man movie. Glad to hear the sequel will be made. Viggo is the thinking man actor.
Kudos. Paul Webster is a class act. He deserves all the success in the world.
Viggo was good in his greasy way, but for my $$$, the real charmer of the film was mob boss ‘Kirill’ played by Vincent Cassel (who physically, would have made a great ‘Joker’ in “The Dark Knight”).
Eastern Promises is the finest film of it’s type made since The Godfather. I’ve been dying for them to do the sequel(s) – So many people did’t see that masterpiece, it’s unbelievable.
Finally hollywood is doing what they shoud be – supporting a great filmaker with a great francise to make a second great film. This is what has been missing for too long!
Even better than the Eastern Promises 2 news is the news that Mortensen, Cronenberg, and Knight are all on board. Sounds like another quality product!
Will Kareel finally get that Nicoli would rather do Anna then him, and what will that drive him to do? How hard can it be for Semion to get orders out of prison to Kareel? And most importantly, will Nicoli finally cross the line to stay undercover or give it all up to save Anna and her daughter from some shockingly violent fate? I am SO there!
I love KST. Her performance in I’ve Loved You So Long was far better than Kate’s in The Reader
Viggo kix ass. Just check “The Road”.
Let us not forget Viggo Mortensen was in The Machinist another intellectually stimulating motion picture that brought one into the mind of a man driven beyond his own sanity by guilt and the insomnia it induced.
Viggo Mortensen either chooses his films and roles himself and has an inspiring set of choices or he has a manager who is extremely good at their profession.
I am on the edge of my seat, even when walking, in my patient wait for the compelling sequel that I can rightfully expect from the performances of Mortensen and the other actors and actresses who were stars in Eastern Promises, and played large roles in making it the film that it is.
To my knowledge, the Russian Mafias are a subject that have gone unbroached prior to this film, allowing them to lie in mystery and unknown to most. Many of these behaviours seem to be accurate enough to make me remember what I have seen these groups do in the US, and their ability to remain shrouded in mystery and remain unnoticed.
Sorry, what version of “The Machinist” did you see? The one I saw had Christian Bale, also a great actor. Although it would have been excellent with Viggo in it.
IMO. Naomi Watts must be in it to make Eastern Promises 2 a worthy sequel.
Mortensen movies don`t make money. He`s a boxoffice poison ever since LOTR and LOTR wasn`t a hit because of him. Eastern Promises was good and he should`ve won Oscar instead of DDL, but the movie didn`t get its $30 mio budget back. Last time they sequelled a crtics darling boxoffice flop, it ended up a bigger floppage – Elisabeth:Golden Age. Perhaps if EP 2 has Hurt Locker`s budget, they`ll actually break even. Sorry to rain on everyone`s parade here but averige Joe and Jane Multiplex won`t touch this or Talking Cure, another Cronensen film. No way. Not even geeks who`ll swear they`ll see it and than will go to Resident Evil 4 show.
I thought A History of Violence and EP were Part One & Two of Cronenberg’s Violence Trilogy.
It’s rare that I can use the word “delightful” to describe much of anything in film these days, but SALMON FISHING is a lovely, effervescent piece. Hopefully the movie will be equally so, we need more just plain wonderful (sans schmaltz) movies like this…
Viggo Mortensen is one of the best, his performance in Carlito’s Way, back in 1993, was unforgettable!
Would love an Eastern Promises sequel, it was a hauntingly good movie. Vincent Cassell should definitely be in it! If Viggo is unavailable, DC can always use Brit Richard Armitage who basically reprises Nikolia character in Spooks or MI5 in the US.
Just watched EP for the millionth time and a sequel would be bliss but not nescessary. It seems most of Viggos movies are left with the viewer to imagine the future of the characters lives. I would love a sequel though just for the fact of brilliant film making. EP2 would just be drug for the mind though and would definetly end up in my movie collection. Please make a Eastern Promises sequel and please try and use the same actors.
