EXCLUSIVE: Buck Rogers, the fighter pilot who wakes up in the 25th Century, is being relaunched as a 3D screen hero. Paul WS Anderson has locked a deal to direct a new version of the classic tale of a fighter pilot who quickly acclimates to the future and puts his skills to use defending the planet against invaders. The character launched in the 1920s and has been the subject of comic books, radio and movie serials, and two TV series, the latter of which ran on NBC and starred Gil Gerard.
Iron Man scribes Art Marcum and Matt Holloway will write the screenplay.
The Buck Rogers rights are controlled by Paradox, the company behind a new version of Conan the Barbarian that is currently shooting in Bulgaria with Marcus Nispel directing Jason Momoa in a Nu Image/Millennium Films production. Paradox will finance the Buck Rogers development, and Anderson’s longtime partner, Jeremy Bolt, is producing with Fredrik Malmberg, with Larry Abramson and George Furla. They will lock in financing when they lock a script, though buyers have been aware of the project since it started getting talked up during last year’s Cannes Film Festival. It is one of the few branded properties that hasn’t been gobbled up by a studio.
Anderson, who is working on another classic property with a new version of The Three Musketeers–Constantin is financing, Summit is North American distributor and international sales agent, and Anderson is casting for a fall shoot–has a knack for launching films that go back for repeat installments. That includes Resident Evil, Aliens Vs. Predators, and most most recently a remake of Death Race, a second installment of which is now in production. ICM repped Anderson and the writers.

I really wonder if it is worth licensing new BUCK ROGERS movies. I’ve never been into hims and I’m a 28 year-old comic fan.
Is it me or wasn’t Frank Miller attached to direct this before The Spirit flopped?
I think Paul W.S. Anderson should do a good job with Buck Rogers, even if his best film is still the original Mortal Kombat. There is a franchise he should go back and reboot.
Having every movie being done in 3D is already getting annoying.
One of the better reboot ideas lately.
The sequel: ten years of litigation over the incredibly screwed up rights. Get a back-up project ready, filmmakers.
Well, they just announced they’re resurrecting Popeye, too. Is it retro, or just regression? isn’t it funny that with the advent of Avatar all the Hollywood poseurs can do is high tail it backwards?
“Beedee, beedee, beedee… what’s up Buck?”
“Barrel-scrapping, Twiki.”
FYI
Buck
Yeah Miller was attached to this, but Spirit bombed so I guess thats why he is out. Anderson is a hack, but his movies invariably make a return so I can see why Paradox went with him. Wish they had been a bit more ambitious though.
Enough with the 3D! Enough, I said!!!
When you can do the business that Avatar and Alice has done do you really think they are going to stop?
They make what makes money, and 3D makes money.
Haha…This is just the beginning. The tip of the iceberg. Talking of iceberg, when is Titanic going to be released in 3D.
I have nothing against 3D. I would just have them do it with the new 3D cameras rather than in post-production.
I remember how people were commenting on here that no one is talking about doing 3D movies because Avatar was a huge flop (mind you, this was when Avatar had ONLY made around $400 million of its $735 million domestic gross at that point…hahaha).
I have been out of the loop on this site. Is Whiskey still commenting on here how Avatar is a gigantic flop? Talk about being out of the loop…LOL.
Anyway, back to the main discussion. It’s a given now that every movie is at least discussing 3D. Why not? For every million tickets you sell, you make an additional $2 million. So, if your movie sells 10 million tickets, it will make roughly $75 million if it were regular 2D. If your movie sold 10 million tickets on 3D screens, then all of the sudden you have made close to $100 million.
In the end that can be the difference between a studio head keeping his job or not.
I can’t wait for Gone With The Wind in 3D!!!! Or Casablanca 3D! The Godfather 3D? Chairman Of The Board 3D(come on, don’t tell me you wouldn’t love to see Carrot Top in 3D!) The possibilities are endless! Hahaha
Good choice for this actually. One of the few reboots/remakes that makes sense today. Cue the incomprehensible hatred of Anderson from aintitcoolnews.
Paul WS Anderson = Cheese
This project will fail
Thank GOD Miller’s out; too bad Anderson’s in.
God, Paul WS Anderson sucks.
It is a good thing Miller is out, since the Spirit was unwatchable. With Paul WS Anderson, who just shot RE4 on the Avatar cams, which I heard looks sick, and Marcum/Holloway who are doing the Highlander reboot, this project might actually work
damn, i was excited for a min bc i thought it said WES anderson. that wouldbve been cool.
Aw, come ON. Somebody name me one, just ONE, even slightly watchable movie that Paul W.S. Anderson has EVER made. I’ve had the poor fortune to sit through a few of his crap piles, and I’m really starting to wonder what it’s going to take for someone to finally take away his crayons and scissors. Honest to god, his movies are SO totally inept, he’s outdone only by Uwe Boll. When will the studios learn??
here is a link to our webseries
we have already been shooting

Yes thats some old friends
What is it with everything going friggin 3D… come on guys. Whats next…….a new version of SMELLORAMA for mass marketing. 3D was great when it was initially released…..but its getting to the point now that they makers of these films are grasping at straws for ideas…. whats next “my sisters keeper” in 3D
PS Love Buck Rogers and Flash Gordon….Dont screw it up
I thought the Dill Family Trust controlled rights to Buck Rogers. How did Paradox get the rights?
“Buck Rogers Begins” is already shooting with rights acquired from Dill. Google it.
Does this mean that Buck will actually be Becky, and played by Milla Jovovich?
No Doubt. Every movie that dipshit Anderson makes has to have his woman Milla in it. Best movie she was ever in was The Fifth Element. Anderson, Bay and Boll need to die.
Who is BR?
please get claudia black and ben browder to play the led parts and give them more romace in the show. Hot make it hot.
I know I’m late to this »news«… but…
Claudia Black & Ben Browder? Oh yeah! That would be the hell of an idea… It could work! (Probably even with PWS Anderson…)
