Upstart distributor Phase 4 Films has given a home to controversial German filmmaker Uwe Boll. Phase 4 has acquired North American rights to three Boll films that include Darfur, the genre filmmaker’s departure into serious subject matter. Billy Zane, Edward Furlong, and Kristanna Loken play journalists in Sudan who see gunmen approaching a village and must decide whether to cover an atrocity or prevent it.
Phase 4’s Barry Meyerowitz promises a summer theatrical release for Darfur, will release the action film The Final Storm on DVD in April, and is still deciding on the horror thriller Rampage. Boll makes genre and vidgame adaptations that are often derided by online critics. A quick web search shows a Wikipedia bio that anoints him a modern day Ed Wood, and a petition urging him to stop making films that apparently has 353,445 signatures. Boll doesn’t suffer these barbs in silence. He has challenged his harshest critics to fistfights. and reportedly beat up five of them in the boxing ring.

If Phase 4 can give a dentist a deal to direct I know a podiatrist they should sign too.
HOW does he get money to make the films?! He’s DESTROYED by critics, the movies don’t make much, and I don’t see a lot of love for him by many people. Amazing.
He must have a great friendship with Kristanna oken, since she also starred in his Bloodrayne -which wasn’t TERRIBLE, though there wasn’t much a point to it either. And I actually blame Madsen’s wooder acting for most of the film’s problems.
In all fairness his movies aren’t as bad as everone makes them out to be. SIEGBURG is a really tough serious movie. He pours more of his own heart into these kind of movies. Therefore I’m curious what Darfur will be like.
The man thinks all film reviewers/writers are losers that will never amount to deutsch, as they know NOTHING about how films and their screenplays work. When he was told about the shitload of journos that have become well-noted film-makers over the years, from Bogdanovich to Truffaut, he draws a blank.
The web writers that lined up for his boxing match in Vancouver, thought it was a publicity-stunt (at first), yukking it up for the crowds, until they realized this little guy (a former amateur boxer) was playing for keeps, pounding the hell out of anyone that got in the way of his haymakers.
He gets his dough from tax shelters in Germany, so that he can access goivernment grants coming out of BC (?!), hiring the usual Vancouver-based ‘name’ actors for scale, including Lokken and Furlong. Everybody also knows that Madsen will take ANY role, as long as there is a bona-fide check in the mail…so there ya’ go in a nutshell…
