Legendary Pictures and Warner Bros finally closed a deal with Toho to do another Godzilla. This has been going on for a year or so. Surely there will be 3D like in the Legendary/Warners Clash of the Titans. But can they breathe fire into an over-sized lizard that seemed out of gas in a 1998 Roland Emmerich-directed TriStar version considered a pricey disappointment? Anybody got ideas on how to make this reptile relevant?

Actually, Godzilla 2000, AKA Gojira ni-sen mireniamu, is a more recent Japanese version that kept to the spirit of the franchise. Emerich’s suffered from the filmmakers not understanding the material.
And well, look at how many recent Godzilla, AKA Gojira, films there have been recently:
http://www.imdb.com/character/ch0005212/
If it’s in 3D I’m gonna be annoyed. I’m over 3D movies already. Is that bad?
Yes, if you were one who was gushing over the painful Avatar. You see, if you gush over garbage like that, they bring you more. Here’s to hoping you were not gushing.
Thank you.
You know what I’m just over already? Color. I’m just annoyed by it. And sound. How much of a fad is that sound? If you sheep hadn’t gushed over the Jazz Singer, or Gone With The Wind, we’d still be watching movies right now instead of fireworks displays.
except everyone I know who has seen a 3d movie lately considers it a gimmick that ads little and the glasses are annoying
I kinda agree Natalie, but can you imagine a G movie in 3D…I’ve been following rumors of an Imax 3D G feature for years now…and for the naysayers, rent Godzilla Final Wars….then multiply by Hollywood cgi…that would rock…
YES!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
GODZILLA RULES!!!!!
As long as in the trailer i see ”The Real Godzilla” im there. Hell i’ll probably see it twice.
Go back to the Rossio & Elliot draft – make that movie and you’ll mint $$$
Here is a radical idea: Have Godzilla really be an exiled poet and prophet from another dimension who finds himself projected onto earth in a grotesque form and must battle aliens and monsters to get back to his real self. Over the course of the movie he becomes more humane and even redemptive. Finally he dies and is reborn on his home world. This is the theme of the book GODZILLANANDA by Edward Bruce Bynum
FOUR WORDS: TAYLOR LAUTNER STARRING VEHICLE
Heidi Montag should play the beast. Or Kirstie Alley? Hmmm….
Cloverfield was the real Godzilla movie. Anything made my WB/Legendary will probably be shite.
How they gonna make a viable Godzilla movie without Raymond Burr?
good point and then they should cease to make this.
I dunno…How’d they make the other 27 w/out him?
You been living in a cave?
Don’t blame Hollywood for its lack of originality. As long as people keep queuing up to see these ‘by the numbers’ productions, that’s what Hollywood will continue to churn out. Much easier than using the old noggin’.
I don’t have a problem with another Godzilla movie as long as the filmmakers follow one rule: be interesting. Godzilla’s a well filmmakers the world over have been drawing water from since the late 1940s. No big surprise someone wants to drop the bucket again.
I am dismayed, however, at the inordinate quantity of reboots/remakes/re-imaginings/sequels/prequels in general, as well as efforts to ride the coattails of other mementos of the cultural conscience (like basing movies on toys or board games where there is no actual story to work from). While some seriously rock (Star Trek) and others not-so-much (Poseidon Adventure), I really do hope that the industry finds the courage to again embrace original ideas in a big way. My fear for Hollywood is it’s going to take a rash of high-profile megabombs for this to happen.
With all due respect to the executives and filmmakers involved, there is no discernible story to be derived directly from the ViewMaster, Etch-a-Sketch, or Erector Set toys. They’re just trying to ride on the mindshare of those names.
If there’s no story behind the property being purchased, I don’t think the executives involved should be able to later defend themselves against a bomb by saying, but this totally worked as a toy!
“Anybody got ideas on how to make this reptile relevant?”
Yeah, it’s called Cloverfield.
You want relevance?
Give him tats and a pissed off wife who finds him cheating w Mothra
This whole thing is insane unless the Japanese do it. First, it can’t be rebooted; you’re stuck with the guy in the suit. Anything more will be considered sacrilege by the fans. Second – NO Godzilla film will ever turn a decent enough profit to merit a $100 mil budget. So just get Toho to produce their own Godzilla 2012 and then forget the whole thing.
Wasted effort if the Americans do it- it will be run out of town on a rail.
If it’s Godzilla versus King Kong, I’m there.
Have Godzilla battle a giant Jennifer Aniston, a giant Katherine Heigl and a giant Megan Fox. They are transformed by an alien beam. But they are evil, so Godzilla needs help. He goes to Monster Island and with the help of a crazy Japanese scientist they turn the 3 Kardashian sisters in to giants who battle Heigl, Aniston and Fox. Get me Sam Arkoff on the phone!
With Toho involved, it will probably be done correctly this time. On the originality complaint – nothing is totally original any longer. Almost every basic story has been done. It’s how all the elements are cobbled together and updated that now counts. Too often, the film makers blow it and almost as often, so do the critics. Nobody is truly original…critics/reporters especially and bloggers/commentators even more so.
I don’t think they need to worry about making the movie “relevent”. I think they should make a real horror film out of it. Make it a scary movie that keeps people on the edge of their seats. It can be done, even with the campy history of all those bad sequels.
Politicize it, then shoot it like reality TV.That’s the obvious way to go. Look to District 9 as the template. Connect the story to the nuclear smuggling underworld and give us an accident in the Persian Gulf. Have all eyes watching when a flashpoint for another Middle East war becomes instead something much stranger. There’s an Iraq movie that Americans would FLOCK to see, I’ll bet.
What we really need is a ZOMBIE Godzilla Movie ! ! ! (in 3D, of course)
Make this one about a virtual Godzilla. The opening scene: a drunken, slutty teen is playing Chat Roulette. They go through a bunch of typical encounters only to find themselves face to face with Godzilla. They can’t make the image go away. Then Godzilla leans out of the screen and rips their face off! Soon he’s everywhere, killing people through their iPhones. Or maybe you could give things an industry-friendly twist and have him appear and kill people when they’re watching illegal movie downloads. If people stayed out of the water because they were psyched out by a mechanical shark, maybe they’ll avoid pirated movies because of a digital amphibian.
Make Godzilla the hero.
i think we need a red godzilla and even a gray godzilla in additon to the green godzilla, shake up the franchise a bit but dont go nature channel on us. is godzilla relevant for movie entertainment? yes.
I for one would luv to see gamera and even rodan again.
can you image “godzilla meets the global warming monster” ???
FYI, Godzilla has ALWAYS been charcoal gray: there is no such thing as a “green Godzilla”. Also, Gamera is not one of Toho Studios’ monsters. He’s the creation of rival studio Daiei.
Actually, the movies in the 70′s made Godzilla a gray-green..otherwise, you are correct.
Check out the fantasy sequence at the beginning of toho’s Always, with a CGI Godzilla done in classic Godzilla style (easy to find on youtube), and tell me a new Godzilla can’t be done properly. Iam looking forward to this flick.
YES!!!! Go for it! Just give him another monster to fight this time. It can’t JUST be Godzilla. We haven’t seen two giant monsters tearing into each other in a large American City in a long time. And with modern effects, this could be spectacular. Count me in.
