EXCLUSIVE: Robert Downey Jr is negotiating a deal to star in Gravity, the 3D space film directed by Alfonso Cuaron. Warner Bros and Legendary Pictures will co-finance. Cuaron wrote the script with his son, Jonas. Downey will play the leader of a team posted at a remote space station. While he and a female colleague are traveling outside the space station, the other team members are decimated by debris from an exploded satellite.
Downey was drawn to the chance to work with Cuaron, the director of Children of Men and Y tu mama tambien. Downey will shoot the film in London this summer, finishing in time to re-team with director Guy Ritchie and Jude Law in the Sherlock Holmes sequel that will shoot early fall, also in London.
The script for Gravity had been developed originally at Universal with the intention of having Angelina Jolie play the female role. Much of the film is devoted to her struggle to get back to Earth and her daughter. Jolie passed on the project around the time Universal cut it loose.
Can’t wait!
Fantastic, can’t wait! Robert Downey Jr. is one of the best actors around.. Thanks for coming back to us Robert!
since when has jolie carried a sci-fi film?
From Jolie to Downey? Talk about a trade-up. The dude is the embodiment of gravitas. So it’s a great fit.
Hey remember when Hollywood was the opposite, quite nervous in fact when working with RDJ?
I doubt anyone in 2000 would believe the biggest movie of summer 2010 is starring Robert Downey Jr and Mickey Rourke.
The comment about Downey and Mickey Rourke is so spot on, imagine ten years ago — people would have thought you were nuts.
Cuaron’s direction throughout Children of Men is jaw-droppingly brilliant. This sounds like a perfect combination from script to screen, and landing Downey as a star should ease up the pressure to cast a “name” actress and go for a genuinely talented one instead that’s appropriate for the role.
Children of Men was the best movie of 2006; Gravity sounds like it won’t suck.
Children of Men wasn’t THAT great. It was okay. It’s one of those films that execs love to tell one another is great because they don’t get it and don’t want to seem stupid, and the critics love, but the public HATES. Plus, Cuaron is the most arrogant guy in the business. The fact he co-wrote it with his SON tell us all we need to know (and ain’t nepotism grand?) This is going to be a reprise of another sci-fi turd from a beloved foreign director- Danny Boyle’s SUNSHINE.
Let the fan boys do sci-fi- or Kubrick. If he was alive.
yeah right dude, as if fanboys would make great sci fi, get your head out of your butt.
Does it matter who he wrote the script with? Last I heard there were a couple of very talented brothers who wrote scripts together… I think their last name was Coen. Bloodline has no bearing on talent or arrogance. And heck… his son is like 29 years old… it is not like he is co-writing the story with a 5 year old.
Before Hollywood gets TOO carried away with this 3D Phenom, I present a list of things we WANT to see in 3D:
Spaceships,
Race Cars,
Exotic Wildlife,
Megan Fox’s Breasts.
This will be incredible!!!
How many actresses can carry a sci fi film besides Angelina Jolie? How about Jodie Foster? She’s had more success carrying films on her own than Jolie (with the exception of the Brave One).
Yeah, but isn’t she like 100 by now?
A lot younger than Denzel though. lol. I’m glad Sandra Bullock showed older women can be bankable.
Maybe in the 90s.Angelina Jolie is the bigger star now.Foster last film was a family friendly fantasy adventure that barely eclipse 100 million, while jolie last find was a oscar bait slow pace thriller, which made fare slightly better, but is the harder sale.
Actually that fantasy film made more domestically and it did well internationally. But that was just a kid’s film with Breslin headlining. Foster had huge hits carrying films all on her own with Contact, and this decade with thrillers like Panic Room and Flightplan. Her drawing power is underrated. But maybe she’s considered too old now.
Angelina’s drawing power is overrated due to her being in the pres all the time. I have yet to see her carry a film completely on her shoulders to as much success unless it was a franchise like Tombraider. We’ll see how Salt does.
Downey I Love you! I’am very happy for this entry =)
angelina is the wrong person ffor this role, meryl streep would be perfect
Angelina never carried a sci-fi film. Am I the only one that finds it a little sad she’s the only bankable actress? Or at least Hollywood seems to think so. It’s time for some new faces.
And I don’t see how Angelina is considered too bankable. If Salt comes out and turns out to be a smash hit then we can say that. Her other films that were hits she didn’t even carry on her own or they were part of a franchise. Hollywood just hypes her up too much.
So far Sandra Bullock is the only one who has proven recently that she can still be bankable. But will that continue even? These new faces that come out lack charisma. Sad times for women in film.
A gifted charmer with a knack for improv playing a character stranded alone in zero-G for the entire movie? No improv, no co-stars–he must have really wanted to work with Cuaron.
Robert, enjoy spending this summer hung from wires in a spacesuit at Pinewood.
This sounds like a boring idea. I would not pay to see this, and in 3D–for what??? I can’t even call this a good gimmick, or even a good concept, or a high concept.
The smart move?: Remake the popular TV series “Space: 1999″ as “Space: 2199″. It is about a space base on the moon. When nuclear dumps blow-up on the lunar surface, the moon is launched out of Earth’s orbit and into deep space–the crew of Moon Base Alpha, in-tow. The resulting journey places the crew in contact with many alien species, some threatening, and soon the Earth men and women that populate it, this modern day Noah’s Ark, begin to realize, that their journey across space, and time, must be guided by the hand of providence–and perhaps they have been chosen to seed the universe with human life, if they can managed to survive?
Now that is a real high-concept, and worth a movie with the full 3D treatment, and a blockbuster budget to boot.
Go back to working on your script and let the professionals talk. The only thing compelling about this post is its ability to inject the words “nuclear dumps” into the conversation. Bravo.
I’m passing on “Space 2199.” See me again in a thousand years.
@DB
A “Space: 1999″ remake will certainly make more money and cause more buzz all over the world than “Gravity”, a film I am sure will be quickly forgotten about.
Yeah cause people have totally forgotten about CHILDREN OF MEN.
No. Your idea sucks.
I’ll sooner go with Alfonso. You know? The guy that made one of the best sci-fi movies ever? Children of Men?
Who the fuck are you?
Maybe Taylor Lautner can play the female role. He’s so pretty.
The script is pretty damn good at a tight 100 pages. It reads like a bullet, and Downey is perfect for the role. The action sequences will play well in 3-D…Universal’s loss is Warner’s gain.
Is there any way to read this script online?
OMG! Dude, Robert Downey, Jr., is the man! Not to mention that he is the best super hero of all time, Iron Man! May 7, 2010 can’t come any sooner. This is gonna be awesome. I’m so stoked for this movie. Space huh? I’ve always been interested in different genres of film, and Robert seems to be the perfect fit for any movie. Heck! He’s such an incredible and versatile actor, he could even play a woman! Plus, he is so HOT! Robert is the SEXIEST man alive. Forget Clooney, Depp, and Jackman (Even though they are all pretty awesome). Sherlock Holmes was beast btw. It would be the best day of my entire life if I could hang out with RDJ for a day. Just for one day…
will this be shot in actual stereo 3d like avatar or converted 2d like alice in wonderland? It’s like watching cardboard cutouts in 3D.
I totally agree that Downey is hot and gifted. But please give a shout out for Cuaron who is also damned gifted! I mourn that he was only allowed to direct one film of the Potter series (“Prisoner of Azkaban”). It remains the only film worth seeing of that series. Indeed, the only thing negative I can say about that film is that it reveals just how bad the other ones are.
Anyway, an awesome actor with an awesome director. Oh, this is going to be good.
I doubt anyone in 2000 would believe the biggest movie of summer 2010 is starring Robert Downey Jr and Mickey Rourke.
Can you image how you would have reacted if someone told you that in 1990?
Can you image how you would have reacted if someone told you that in 1990?
That’s more plausible in 1990 though when Downey Jr. was a promising up-and-comer (who hasn’t been arrested … yet) and Rourke hasn’t quit acting for boxing. In 2000, Rourke was MIA and Downey was in jail.
Get Eva Green for this.
She’s a great actress and has quite the on screen presence, plus she’s darkly hot. She won’t try to steal every scene and every shot like Angelina does in her movies.
Children of Men was amazing, so I’m excited to see this…but in 2D
Yahhhhoooooooooo!!!!!!!!!! I love RDJ Ilove RDJ I love Rdj I love RDJ he’s so hot!!!!! and did I metion I love RDJ!!!!
Children of Men wasn’t THAT great. It was okay.
