UPDATES ‘FlashForward’ Showrunner Exits For Features
EXCLUSIVE From Deadline|London editor Tim Adler: Sorry FlashForward fans (of which I’m one), the UK broadcaster Five which airs the show over here tells me it’s not going to save the series if ABC cancels it. There’s been speculation that foreign buyers could still support FlashForward. But the show has lost nearly half its viewers Stateside since ABC premiered it last fall. Apart from the UK, the show’s also popular in Spain, where Cuatro airs it, and in Italy, where Fox Italia does. Foreign broadcasters investing directly in those U.S. shows more popular overseas than they are at home isn’t without precedent. Back in the 1990s, NBC cancelled Baywatch but ITV kept it going because it got such high ratings. Officially, ABC says it will decide whether to renew or not around May closer to the upfronts. The show is coming back on March 18th after ABC decided not to compete with the juggernaut American Idol.
Flashforward’s prospects are not looking good. The rave reviews it first received in the fall have evaporated. ABC has quietly trimmed the number of this first season’s episodes from 23 to 22. And we reported back in February that David Goyer was quitting as showrunner to concentrate on scripting the third Batman movie. ABC has appointed Jessika Borsiczky, Lisa Zwerling and Tim Lea as his replacements. Marc Guggenheim quit as showrunner in October.

wouldn’t take you as a flashforward fan. premiere was incredible – completely living up to the hype – but fiennes’ grimacing and the lack of an episodic plot is painful.
telling the world about a global blackout over a game of poker? really?
ABC ruined this show. They are boneheads over there noting the first scripts to death and second guessing themselves and the creator. They don’t know how to make a show. Modern Family is good because they have Fox as their studio and got ABC network to back off. ABC Studio and ABC network are a deadly combination at this moment in time. They haven’t been able to create a hit. Shonda is successful because she doesn’t take their crap. The Deep End was loathsome. Cougar Town is the one exception. It is a hit because it has the time slot after Modern Family.
flashfoward rocks please don’t cancel it.
PLEASE SAVE FLASH FORWARD! This show rocks and the finale left me panting for more! There’s obviously room for more episodes and storylines. I want to see what happens to everyone. Maybe SyFy can pick it up or something… but ABC are BONEHEADS!
I am really upset about the cancellation of Flash Forward this season. I thought this TV show was well thought out, interesting, fast moving, and exciting! I wish someone would pick this up and continue on with it. Best show I’ve seen in a long time! Tracy Nowlin
Please someone pick Flash Forward up and go into the next series. You can at least let us know what happens to everyone. This is one of the most exciting shows I have seen in a long time. It kept me on the edge of my seat. It just can’t stop just like that. Everyone I told about it who started watching it is waiting for the next season. I’m going to think positive as I write my name down; so, you can email and tell me what network picked it up. Thanks, Donna
I have just seen Flashforward on TF1 in France – I loved the storyline (and by the way why is everyone on about ‘Lost’ which was absolute rubbish in my opinion as having been a better concept and a comparison to explain why this 100x better programme has been cancelled) and am devastated to find out that there is no further series – isn’t there any corporation out there to continue this exceptional series to cater for those of us who loved it – in France it was aired between 11pm and 2am, with 3 episodes back to back, so again it wasnt given the chance to have the following it deserved……..pffff
BRING BACK FLASHFORWARD EVEN IF IT IS 2 YEARS LATE!
I do not understand how this show can be cancelled. I love the show and so does my boyfriend and there are quite a number of friends that I know that watch the show and love it. I truly hope it is not cancelled. Although I do enjoy some of the reality shows – they are becoming a bit much watching how other people spend money foolishly while others have to scrap payday to payday. It is nice to have a show that is different from all the rest and maybe if you did a little better advertising or switched it to another tv station they would know how to handle a wonderful, exciting show. By the way – I LOVE modern family. I truly hope all the shows on Wednesday night and flash forward are not cancelled. Thank you for your time
I am upset that Flash Forward was cancelled too. I just read that Starz may be working on doing a 2nd season. I really hope they do. I really enjoyed the show !
This show is amazing please dont cancel it
The show is great. Both my wife and I love it. Please don’t cancel it.
this show i amazing!!!! Best in a very long time. Is there a way to keep it on the air?
There apparently needs to be a mechanism to interested networks, cable channels and foreign networks to form ad hoc consortiums to purchase individual shows for continuation when they don’t meet the statistical demands of U. S. broadcast channels but may not be affordable for any one channel acting alone. It seems channels mentioned in other comments share some of my interest in science fiction, but the cable ScyFi channel in the USA by itself can’t be expected to continue every network show with a science fiction theme that may have been built around broadcast and not cable wage scales and production cost parameters.
Together with European channels though the market may be large enough to keep shows intact. Flash Forward has actually improved over time, but it was slow to develop a rythmn and broadcast is not known for patience. Ironically ABC may well do worse with the next show in that time slot. Everyone has to have noticed the overall declining share of TV viewing broadcast channels have compared to cable and competing media.
Often now it is cheaper for production companies to move on to the next project rather than to keep actors and actresses under contract while they try to negotiate with multiple small channels on their own because of the risk of being unable to sell to enough stations to cover costs with or without a profit. It is we the viewers who are left unsatisfied, especially with clift hanger episodes like the last Flash Forward eplisode. That is the primary reason I believe that broadcast channels have lost so much viewership since I was a child. When I was a child you could miss the first few years of a series, then see an episode while a series you were watching was in reruns, find you liked the show, like it, watch new episodes the next season and reruns you missed on an independent station and see a final farewell episode in most cases. Now a show may be cut off after one pilot episode, and you just can’t trust a broadcast network.
I call on viewer power!. Boycott all ABC shows unless they say they’re gonna bring it back!
I am. Anything made by ABC won’t be seen in this house unless it’s FlashForward season 2.
This is the best show i have seen in years, please don’t cancel it. ABC are just retarded to cancel this show….
So if any foreign broadcasters are willing to invest in this show, PLEASE DO!… We need to know what happens in next season!
This is the way i see it. Flashforward was a GREAT show. I always watch movie channels because i cannot stand commercials, but i did make an exception for Flashforward. I think it is an AWSOME show. I really looked forward to another season, But i guess thats not going to happen. Thats just my luck, finally a GREAT show comes out that i like and it gets cancelled. Wish i had the money to sponser or do whatever it takes to keep it going!!!!
Completely an idiotic move. First drama my husband and I have sat down to watch on network TV in a long time. So disappointed. Would completely be willing to participate in a boycott and gather anyone that would listen. Great acting, great storyline. Why give up? You had a winner. To bad ABC is so nearsighted.
From what I read, Five is the last “saviour” FlashForward should wait anyway
There has been nothing really *compelling* about FlashForward. I never watched Lost, so I tried this. And while there was enough to keep me a bit hooked week to week, tomorrow night ABC wants me to rip TWO hours out of my life and give it to FF? No. This is where I drop the series — especially with them now adding a *second* flash forward?! Christ, did the guys who wrote the movie Hancock come up with that lame idea?!
Idiot. It’s based on a novel. Maybe it was just over your head?
Actually, the episode order was originally 25. Then it was 23. Then it was 22.
The pilot script for FlashForward was phenomenal. Clever, gripping and layered. But the actual pilot and subsequent episodes were terrible. Weak performances, lame effects and no heart. Hate to say this about any show that employs hundreds of people, but based on its merits, it kind of deserves to go down in flames.
yeah, it sounds like the staff doesn’t even want this thing to come back. Chalk this one up to a first-time showrunner crashing his own ship… err, “ankling” to concentrate on his feature career. Can’t wait for that next Ghost Rider pic.
I really, really wanted to like FlashForward, but the show drove me away. The writing never really measured up to the show’s premise or to the talent of the cast, and eventually I just decided to stop wasting my time on it.
So I’m not going to miss it when it’s gone, and I hope that everyone involved does better with their future projects.
I absolutely love this show. It’s kept me engaged and intrigued. It is thought provoking and sometimes, it’s hard for me to wrap my mind around the concepts – but boy, do I love trying.
I believe this show lost viewers because it requires people to think and it’s common knowledge that the vast majority of humans don’t like to use their brains.
Oh well…..
Well there are FAR many more Americans who are not being counted who actually watch and enjoy FLASHFORWARD.
The premier episode on Sep 24th 2009 had close to 13 million viewers. That is absolutely unbelievable for any show’s FIRST episode.
Then the REAL viewers (not just the ones who wanted to see what a “blackout” would look like) averaged out at about 8 million viewers (don’t forget to take into account DVR numbers, which is usually around an additional 2 million more viewers)
FlashForward has been holding steady to it’s numbers since it’s second episode, but instead of enjoying the show for what it IS, the press is only focusing on what it is NOT.
We get it, it’s NOT another “LOST”. It’s not trying to be. If the press stopped looking at it as a “replacement” for LOST (Which suffered a record low ratings this week), they’ll see an amazing story unfolding of Fate & Free Will.
I enjoy the show VERY MUCH! So much so that I’ve chosen to produce a Fan based podcast around FlashForward. I watched the “RECAP” episode that aired last night and saw “thousands” of twitter followers who were experiencing FLASHFORWARD for the first time and they were impressed and drawn in.
Obviously the PRESS will never be pleased. But the fans are.
lol.. are you serious.. the fact it had a large showing first show means people THOUGHT it was going to be good. When half the viewers left after watching a few it means they REALISED it stunk.
and yes it is supposed to be the next lost.. they are even saying “the end” is in 2016…
This show was good the first few episodes.. the last several have had horrendous writing. This show is done.. face it
That show is so bad. It lacked direction from the beginning. Surprised these people ever find work again.
It’s hard to believe that with a powerhouse like Jessica Borsizsky (formerly Goyer) behind this show, it’s failing…
This series is total crap. I’ve read the book upon which it’s based several times and the people behind Flash Forward completely butchered the concept by removing any sort of science fiction element and replacing with a lame conspiracy plot.
I know who the 3rd show runner is — that writing staff’s in extremely capable hands.
I LOVE THIS SHOW. IT”S SO GOOD. SO MUCH BETTER THAN MOST.
WE ARE LUCKY TO HAVE GOYER, BUT HE IS TO BUSY WITH BATMAN AND
SUPERMAN> BELIEVE ME< YOU DONT PUSH OUT DAVID S. GOYER
HE IS TO BUSY….
Didn’t they up three writers on the show to show runner because they didn’t want to bring in a show runner and pay them because they know they are canceling the show because it’s a piece of crap? Everyone in town knows this.
The first matter at hand is that Five would not have enough moolah to support FlashForward. Had it been a major success on Germany’s ProSieben then that would also be a start (think Primeval). Flashforward premed in teuton about 3 wks ago and tends to lose much of its ‘Fringe’ lead-in.
This is like one of those stories where false stuff is rumoured on blighty reds.
I’m sorry to hear this show might not make it. I’ve really enjoyed it in spite of some aspects that annoy me (how can everyone expect to love everything about a show?). It’s far more intelligent and better written than the infantile Lost, whose every episode seems to revolve around the lame histrionics of a “You must do X right now! But I can’t explain why…” scene. Talk about cliches–someone gets on a ladder, you know it’s going to break when they’re halfway down.
The writing on this show is dreadful. Dreadful. Aliens would have to take over the staff to make it better. David Goyer is smart…… let me go to a movie. Smart move.
This show is fantastic. Sequences are amazing (the bus in the lake), stories are compelling… the entire premise is genius. The actors are great to boot. I am sucked in every week.
LMAO was there ever any serious question that Five would save Flashforward?
Interesting commentary. I haven’t watched a TV show regularly (other than the Sopranos and Entourage) in many years. I saw the full preview for FlashForward on the HD Network about a month before it came on and decided to check it out. I like the show a lot. Sure, I could criticize a few things, but all in all I am glad I have DVR’ed it every week and watched it. I know though it won’t be back. As I recall, it was to be 22 episodes, then extended to 25, then dropped to 23 and then 22. That’s all you need to know.
Now, last night I watched Parenthood. My God, it was so awful, it reminded me of why I don’t watch TV shows regularly.
“Flash Forward” is one of the Union Busting AFTRA shows. I cannot support ANY one hour dramas, under AFTRA contracts. May they all crash and burn. They are made just like motion pictures- SAG’s jurisdiction, not “live” sitcoms-the scumbags union-AFTRA’s. The only reason that they are AFTRA is to bust the actor’s unionm, the Screen Actors Guild.
P.S. How many of the actors were Americans? My British friend said that many were English.
It’s a shame FlashForward isn’t being given a chance. Regardless of ratings and showrunner issues, this is an excellent premise with fantastic opportunities to explore. The show has been VERY spotty, with some episodes downright weak and others simply excellent.
The real problem with the show is that they’re not really exploiting their premise. They’ve fallen into the “dumb TV show” model, rather than going whole hog into the richness of the premise. It happens all too often on TV these days.
Right now, it’s teetering in the balance. If the next showrunner can maximize the premise, the show could get back on track. If the next episodes are weak, the show will die. Fans aren’t stupid. TV execs just think they are.
And I’ve done a pilot with David Goyer
I was disappointed that FF seemed to collapse into a cop melodrama. I know, I know, there just aren’t enough of them on TV, but still. I’ll DVR the 2-hour tomorrow and see if I want to follow it further.
it’s almost as bad as fringe and lost
Hey, Fringe is a good show to those of us with more than two brain cells (notice I didn’t stick up for Lost; watching that last episode was a huge waste of my time). I for one liked FlashForward though many of the critical comments here are correct–If they hadn’t tried to dumb it down and make several episodes that were so BORING, it might have lasted another season.
I loved FlashForward’s premiere– lots of action and good setup– but gave up after four episodes in which NOTHING HAPPENED. I have not read the book, but based on what I know about it, it sounds like they would have been much better off sticking to that plot and making the protagonist a scientist… but no, it’s network television, so the protagonist has to be either a cop, a doctor or a lawyer. Looks like this will go down as yet another series that tried and failed to follow in Lost’s footsteps…
FlashForward’s premiere was okay. That’s it. Just okay, competent, worthy of airing on network TV. Everything since? Dreadful.
It makes the both the FBI (shoddy detective work) and the show’s writers (shoddy everything) look terrible. I just can’t forgive the “Daddy, DB Gibbons is a bad man” episode cliffhanger. It was not suspenseful or even intriguing, and that’s how most of the episodes (act breaks, scenes, beats, etc) peter out. Why would they expect people to want to come back for more?
Everyone wanted this show to be the successor to Lost. It’s not Lost at all, and that’s fine, but it’s also not good, which is not fine. I want better things for the show’s cast, particularly John Cho, Courtney B Vance, and Barry Shabaka Henley. Cancel it already. I’m sure most of the cast tested in second position for pilots anyway.
