UPDATES ‘FlashForward’ Showrunner Exits For Features
EXCLUSIVE From Deadline|London editor Tim Adler: Sorry FlashForward fans (of which I’m one), the UK broadcaster Five which airs the show over here tells me it’s not going to save the series if ABC cancels it. There’s been speculation that foreign buyers could still support FlashForward. But the show has lost nearly half its viewers Stateside since ABC premiered it last fall. Apart from the UK, the show’s also popular in Spain, where Cuatro airs it, and in Italy, where Fox Italia does. Foreign broadcasters investing directly in those U.S. shows more popular overseas than they are at home isn’t without precedent. Back in the 1990s, NBC cancelled Baywatch but ITV kept it going because it got such high ratings. Officially, ABC says it will decide whether to renew or not around May closer to the upfronts. The show is coming back on March 18th after ABC decided not to compete with the juggernaut American Idol.
Flashforward’s prospects are not looking good. The rave reviews it first received in the fall have evaporated. ABC has quietly trimmed the number of this first season’s episodes from 23 to 22. And we reported back in February that David Goyer was quitting as showrunner to concentrate on scripting the third Batman movie. ABC has appointed Jessika Borsiczky, Lisa Zwerling and Tim Lea as his replacements. Marc Guggenheim quit as showrunner in October.

Pilot was astonishing fun…real popcorn television. But this was ultimately a limited series and had it been planned creatively as such it could’ve worked. As an ongoing series it just didn’t have the storytelling juice…
Sorry to hear about the problems of the suits, because I really like the show and hope the best for it – I’m hanging in, watching it, and hoping the thing saves itself, somehow!
barring a huge comeback, this show is dead
FlashFoward should have been positioned more of a miniseries event. The setup is a unique concept but there really wasn’t a lot of plot there to fuel a full series.
The show is AWFUL. Joseph Fiennes is horrible. We gave up on it. I wanted to support the show because it films in LA – but then half the cast is BRITISH. I am so sick and tired of show after show after show hiring Brits and Aussies over American actors (and then we get to listen to their horrible American accents). There isn’t enough work for American actors – it is a crime that jobs are given to actors from other countries. STOP IMPORTING ACTORS – there is more than enough amazing US talent to choose from…
I agree with LostFan, this show would have made a great mini series.
As a longtime LOST fan, I was excited about the basic premise of FLASHFORWARD. The pilot was interesting enough, but the first part of the season just fell flat from week to week. Fiennes grimacing and lightweight show-running were driving the show into an early grave. I was basically watching on fumes.
That said, the 2-hour return (and why did you refer to it as a “Premiere” last night, Mr. Benson?) was pretty damn awesome. Lots of juicy questions answered, reined-in performances, and much tighter scenes, have made for a truly interesting show. Very excited about the coming weeks. I just hope it’s not too late.
I also loved the premiere but suddenly the show just tanked. Makes me wonder if there was ever a bible or if producers were just making it up as they went along.
Here’s a FlashForward: Guess what’s not going to be on ABC’s schedule next year?
DeeinLA –
Don’t be fooled by TV producers claiming to have bibles for their series. The best shows come as a collaboration between a writing staff — not from some manifesto the creator drew up twelve months before he/she even shot the pilot.
And don’t buy it for a second when you hear a creator say he had the first three seasons “all mapped out.” They’re blowing smoke up your ass and doing a disservice to the writing staff they’ve hired to keep their series fresh and inviting.
As the show continues the writing, character development, and acting have outclassed anything on network TV at this time. It sucks that such a high class complex sci-fi drama will probably be canceled after one season. Back to the moronic lowest common denominator shows. Sorry, I’m not one of those. This is the first show in many years that enticed me to watch network TV again after many years. Guess I’ll be MIA.

I loved the novel “Flashforward” by Robert Sawyer upon which this series was based. Although the television writers changed it to a conspiracy theory instead of the science-fiction in the book,
the series is still compelling and better than anything else on tv.
I love the characters, and can’t wait to see what happens to them each week.
I am saddened to see this show go away. I love the actors and think it is such a good idea. ABC is not pushing the show and the writers are left with no leader. BTW Goyer was fired!
I love this show. I work for a living so I dont have time to watch tv, so I dont even own one. I watch everything on HULU. I check every week for a new episode of FF. I believe it is an awesome show. I never was a big ABC fan but this show changed my mind. Now if ABC cancels FF i guess I will go back to sci-fi. I dont know about the rest of the viewing public but reality shows are ruining this country. Gimme a good drama, I have enough reality ever day.
i really enjoy this show, save it please, most first seasons are pretty dire and I still can’t believe Andromeda made it to 5 seasons based on season 1 – it was awful so if that show made it for 5 years based on its 1st season ratings this show can…
Don’t cancel flashforward please i love it
Fantastic show — can’t get enough, and I don’t waste time on TV unless I love the show.
Unbelievable how opposite these comments are. I absolutely adore the show, it’s interesting and suspenseful and every week i look forward to it. but god forbid i like a show anymore, it just ends up getting canceled. please let it be saved
also should note how many people watch it online, not on tv. many more viewers there, since people are busy and can’t tune in at the time it’s on often times
I love the show. I await its arrival anxiously every week. It is my favorite non animated tv show.
I think they launched the show at the wrong time. As a fan of Lost I attempted to watch Flashforward as I thought the hype about it being the sucessor to Lost was true. Don’t get me wrong it started out really well but as it went on I found myself getting more and more disinterested in it.
My main reason for that is as much as I love Lost it has been an intense relationship. I’ve stuck with it for years and years. Through all the times when the writers kept throwing more and more questions at us and no answers. I had to grit my teeth when it felt like the show had no real destination and they were making it up as they went with no end in sight. Thankfully my determination is now beginning to pay off but the effort required to stick with the show through all that was immense. Unfortunately I just can’t make that commitment again to a show like Flashforward which seems destined to be heading that way. This is especially true as Lost hasn’t even finished yet. I think Flashforward would’ve had more impact if it began at least a year after Lost had finished, satisfying the withdrawl symtoms.
Great premise. Bad writing. Terrible acting and weak characters (especially Mark/Joseph Fiennes). Currently abysmal ratings in USA–placing 5th in it’s time slot behind even the CW. Have you heard of the CW in Europe? Show is dead for sure.
which ever network, all these series going away.. you don’t feel like a bunch of thieves? what about moving the show “flash forward” to a different time slot..
the crap jokers on show sg1 hung around for awhile, jeez how did they do it? oh yea, the different time slot thing.
abc.. bunch of bravo-alpha-sierra-tango-alpha-romeo-delta-sierra’s
just move the dam show to saturday noon’s you idiot’s
the ABC is nuts. Flash Forward is the best show I’ve ever seen please save it. The ABC doesn’t deserve this show at all, I hope this show will be continue on another network.
With recent Episodes Flash Forward shows it’s capability to replace with best series like LOST, I don’t now how they dare to say that movie lost it’s viewers if they didn’t make gaps in showing Episodes it wouldn’t lost it’s viewers.
Please continue it on another network.
I am 15 years old, I live in England and I was genuinely surprised when I found out FlashForward is being axed today. Currently studying my GCSE’s, I look forward to an hour on Monday evenings where I can relax and enjoy this exciting, puzzling heartfelt drama which never fails to keep me on my toes.
I have read the book, and I believe by changing factors such as how far in to the future the planet sees has enabled it to be perfect for television purposes. I know I’m young, but FlashForward is the best programme I watch and have ever watched and will be sad to see it go. I was really excited about the prospect of it lasting to 2016!
I also believe people expect far too much and judge too harshly. For example, Joseph Fiennes’ acting I find great as he portrays Mark as a caring man who cares a lot for the welfare of others and his family. Not a fault with the other actors either, particularly Simon who is just fantastic! The plot and all the sub-plots are great and how they intertwine and would have done in the future. FlashForward had great potential and it is a shame it was never really given a chance.
At least soon I won’t have to record Glee on Mondays as they previously clashed!
You had me going until the Glee comment…
Something wrong with Glee?
