SUNDAY AM: I’m still traveling through tonight. Here are Friday and Saturday and weekend North American grosses. I’ll refine the figures later:
1. Alice In Wonderland (Disney) Week 3 [3,739 Theaters]
Friday $9.8M, Saturday $14.5M, Weekend $34.1M, Cume $265.4M
Major moolah and #1 for its 3rd week in a row. Again, these 3D pics with higher ticket prices continue to dominate the box office.
2. Diary Of A Wimpy Kid (Fox) NEW [3,077 Theaters]
Friday $7.4M, Saturday $8.7M, Weekend $21.8M
As predicted, Wimpy passed much-hyped The Bounty Hunter on Saturday and place 2nd for the weekend. Who da thunk it? Fox already has a film sequel in development based on this wonderful book series. This is fired Disney movie chief Nina Jacobson’s first film as a producer. She brought Brad Simpson on to produce with her. Together, they spent 5 months looking for the wimpy kid and even had an audition website where thousands of kids tried out. The pic, which was championed by Fox 2000′s Carla Hacken, cost only $19M to make.
3. The Bounty Hunter (Relativity/Sony) NEW [3,074 Theaters]
Friday $7.6M, Saturday $8.2M, Weekend $20.5M
This is an embarrassingly soft opening considering the tabloid celebpower (Jennifer Aniston, Gerard Butler) and the wide release and omnipresent marketing. Maybe audiences are tiring of these imbecilic romantic comedies? Or these flack-phonied romances between stars leading up to the films’ opening? Stop the stupidity, Hollywood.
4. Repo Men (Relativity/Universal) NEW [2,521 Theaters]
Friday $2.1M, Saturday $2.3M, Weekend $6.1M
Still another disaster for both Relativity and Universal. This touted $32M budget pic was supposed to attract a sizable segment of the male moviegoing audience this weekend for an expected opening of double-digit grosses. Nope. As one rival studio exec snarked to me tonight, “Looks like the idea for Repo Men should have been repossessed.”
5. Green Zone (Universal) Week 2 [3,004 Theaters]
Friday $1.8M, Saturday $2.6M, Weekend $5.9M, Cume $24.7M
Relativity had a financial interest in this $100M-budgeted Universal pic which the studio unsuccessfully tried to sell as “Bourne 4″ just because it re-paired Matt Damon with director Paul Greengrass. Yet another total war movie write-off for fired Universal Pictures mogul Marc Shmuger’s disastrous tenure. Question is, when does boss Ron Meyer start to show he’s feeling the heat from all these losers?
6. She’s Out Of My League (Paramount) Week 2 [2,958 Theaters]
Friday $1.8M, Saturday $2.3M, Weekend $5.7M, Cume $19.6M
7. Shutter Island (Paramount) Week 5 [2,704 Theaters]
Friday $1.4M, Saturday $2.1M, Weekend $4.7M, Cume $115.7M
8. Avatar (Fox) Week 14 [1,246 Theaters]
Friday $1M, Saturday $1.7M, Weekend $3.9M, Cume $736.8M
9. Our Family Wedding (Fox Searchlight) Week 2 [1,609 Theaters]
Friday $1.1M, Saturday $1.6M, Weekend $3.7M, Cume $13.6M
10. Remember Me (Summit) Week 2 [2,215 theaters]
Friday $1.2M, Saturday $1.2M, Weekend $3.1M, Cume $13.8M
This drama was always going to be a small film, even with Twilight Saga’s Robert Pattinson starring. Besides, Summit Entertainment spent only $16M to make it and then covered 2/3s of the budget with foreign pre-sales.
Editor-in-Chief Nikki Finke - tip her here.

I think that Bounty Hunter opening in the 20s is incredible. The Cinemascore is a B- and the film is terrible. The studios need to stop making unoriginal trash and start becoming more original! Kudos to the marketing department for taking an uninspired movie and dressing it like the prom queen!
What are you talking about? If it barely squeaks by w/ 20, that’s 8 mil LESS than Butler’s last horrid rom com with Katherine Heigl, ‘The Ugly Truth.’ Overall it will come in 3rd. For a ‘romantic comedy,’ that sucks donkey ballz.
Why are there no postings on this site about the amazing failure of Green Zone. That movie had a budget of over $100 million and opened at $14 million and has zero legs. When will they stop making the anti war middle east movies it seems Hollywood wants to lose millions over and over.
I agree. And, it sucked!! Just because it’s Matt Damon and Paul Greengrass do we have to say it’s great? I mean, there was absolutely no character development. It was Matt running around with the camera shaking around.
Garbage.
Maybe this films abysmal showing has something to do with it’s so called “star” being a pompous twit. I for one used to be a fan, but I now refuse to spend one penny forwarding his “career”. Say bye, bye Matt…
Where exactly did you get the idea that Matt Damon is a pompous twit? You couldn’t be further from the truth. He is one of only three “stars” I’ve worked with that I didn’t want to strangle after and have kept in touch with since. Your statement is just tabloid nonsense. He’s actually an intelligent, sweet, nice guy.
“Why are there no postings on this site about the amazing failure of Green Zone?”
Maybe they hope to make back their investment in Iran and Syria. /sarc
What? Remember Sandra Bullock and BRADLEY COOPER – in all about Steve opening weekend what 11 million or Matthew and KATE HUDSON in Fool’s Gold……..Get Real! Sandra Bullock’s The Proposal opened with 36 million the highest weekend ever for her and the 1st time in 10 years #1 spot! So no! The Bounty Hunter is on target! Look at Matt Damon’s Green Zone opening weekend 11 million with over 100 million to make! So get the facts straight! I loved the Bounty Hunter!
Ugly Truth was unwatchable. Shocking that it did as well as it did. Terrible movie.
Riley Ellis is the real hero with Whimpy Kid who found the book for Fox when it was still doodles on the internet. Nina and Brad were lucky to be along for the ride.
Riley Ellis? She is crazy and tried to take credit for everything over at Fox 2000. People at Fox have been griping about how she gets a thanks credit on the movie but did NOTHING. She’s a book scout. she had nothing to do with making the movie. She is universally disliked over there
Thanks for chiming in, Riley.
I’ve never heard of Riley Ellis, apparently IT is a woman, according to the post next to mine. But I have heard of Brad Simpson, and I have definitely heard of Nina Jacobson.
I hope Wimpy Kid cleans up. The book series is great fun and actually insightful about what it’s like to be a kid. Taking my son this weekend. Who needs wizards and olympians and giant budgets when you’ve got Greg Heffley.
And Hollywood needs to focus more on kid’s fare.
It’s not only a fun genre but great business too.
Kid’s programming made the Olsen twins and the Disney’s richer than most in Los Angeles.
So Right! Jennifer stop with the fake romances and go get some acting lessons for crying out loud. Both of them should be embarassed that Wimpy is going to beat them when they were everywhere selling this stupid movie, you couldn’t pay me enough to go and watch this piece of shit.
wow! why wouldn’t wimpy beat out? it is a family movie so for a child you got at least one parent maybe it’s a family affair more tickets? what about matt or jude movie? what gives? love jennifer, saw the bounty hunter and loved it!
So Right on Nikke! Hollywood needs to stop the insanity and Aniston needs to stop with the fake pr boyfriends and just try selling a movie on her own.The both of them should really be embarassed that Wimpy is going to beat them when they were everywhere selling that shit of a Movie.
The worst thing about an Aniston movie is the months of unmitigated hype surrounding it. She could end world hunger with her flack budget. For the love of all things holy, Aniston, if you must act, then act – and leave the schlockfest to the Housewives of New Jersey.
That is the question, “must she act?” Her movies and promotional tours seem to be torture for her, she really is quite joyless, humorless and banal even when she goes out and starts pimping this stuff in the media. It’s become cring-inducing just seeing her gear up for these things, which as some have said, already start a good 6 months ahead. It’s like that one year – 2006 was it? Wall to wall Aniston She released liked 5 movies in one year it had to be. It was like you couldn’t escape her. The world doesn’t owe her a legit career. I’d rather see Lisa Kudrow get some breaks.
Ditto!! Who hasn’t watched the dour Angst-iston in ANYthing and not paid more attention to whether her hair would actually move than to anything the rest of her was doing?
She needs a speedy return to television where she is actually- dare I say- tolerable. Movies just aren’t for her. I can’t believe they keep giving them to her.
Exactly !
“Still another disaster” for Relativity? I guess that means we can expect another blow job article soon from the entertainment press on the genius of Ryan Kavanaugh.
Whose bright idea was it to release a movie aimed at young males — who will be watching the NCAA tournament all weekend? Great way to pick a release date.
Exactly Nikke, finally someone with gut speaking out !
I just dont’ know the hype surrounding Aniston, she can’t hardly act, she’s not pretty, there’s ton of young, fine, talented, funnier actress , who charged less than Aniston waiting out there. But why was Aniston keep getting paid for this carppy acting ?
I saw REPO MEN for free and was in shock at how incredibly horrible it is. There are several points in the movie when you wonder if it is going to turn into a parody or if the story really did just fall apart in that lazy, inexcusable way… it didn’t and it did.
I hate to see good people get a bad wrap but this film just wreaks of laziness and heads will roll because of it. How did Stuber, Relativity, and Uni all think this script was okay to put into production and film okay to release? A horribly flawed script, two supporting actors as leads, and a first time director… What a combo everyone!
It would be one thing if it was just a bad film, but because of its graphic depictions of surgery is unwatchable to a mainstream audience and it will fall off HEAVILY next week.
Completely agreed. I was surprised at how hard they were pushing RepoMen, I assume trying to get a big first weekend and then let it die. But if it were my project I wouldn’t have wasted that much marketing budget, cut your losses a year ago and maybe even avoid releasing it at all. It’s one of the worst movies to come in a while.
Agencies better be worried, the inside game of putting your talent, your producer, your director and the studios money at risk is over! All of these people need to be fired.
CAA needs to be put on notice.
It’s amazing how many turds Stuber has produced. Wonder how long he keeps that deal at Universal with all the money he costs them. Has he made them any profit at all outside his movies with Vince Vaughn (who clearly is the one in command in that relationship)? Awful.
Hilarious! And so true!
No shock that his empty brain is being exposed.
Could the industry just finally admit that Jennifer Aniston is not talented or charming enough to open a movie. People will hang out watching her if they don’t have to pay for it, but otherwise it all depends on her co-stars not her. Marriage to Brad Pitt does not make her a movie star no matter how often the tabs put her on the front page. Stop hiring her as the lead, please. At least Clooney picks material that become award fodder, she doesn’t even have that going for her.
amen. she’s a little long in the tooth for all these rom-coms and she’s, finally, not a movie star. if she showed any growth as an actress or person that might change but i think it’s time for juicy character parts or another sit-com.
The bar is set so very low for Aniston by people – which worries me, because the day she does anything even REMOTELY decent, her PR flack and paid minions will probably demand she get recognized, even though she won’t deserve it then either.
That’s what I’m afraid of. If Bullock can win for dreck like The Blindside, anything is possible.
Excuse me, when is 20 million NOT opening a movie? It’s not like this movie opened at 5 million.
Havnt seen Alice in wonderland yet. Is that really that good?
no, I saw it this weekend and was bored senseless
Am I on crack, or is a $50M film opening to more than $20M not at all embarrassing? I have a feeling the studio won’t be too, too bothered.
If you’re Elizabeth Banks or Leslie Bibb or Chelsea Handler or (insert another generic white woman that could easily be substituted for Aniston, only talented) that wouldn’t be embarassing, but when you’re ‘Jennifer Aniston,’ whose been doing this for 20 yrs, and your rep pimps/markets you like you’re Sandra Bullock or Sarah Jessica Parker or Cameron Diaz or Julia Roberts….well then, YEAH – it’s pretty GD ‘embarassing.’
well, i guess that means, bullock has been below par in her movies! since the proposal was her biggest opening with 36 millions! julia roberts had several bombs along with cameron and sarah jessica even angelina jolie yep – mighty heart only made 5 million! it wasn’t and indie film either! lost major! along with the changeling….. HOW EMBARASSING for them YEAH!
That’s how it works, “get real.” Those women get bashed for their movies that don’t perform stellar at the box office, too. So do Megan Fox and Nicole Kidman, and many others.
A Mighty Heart only cost about $15 million to make btw. Maybe it doesn’t technically count as an indie but it didn’t cost anywhere near a typical studio film like The Bounty Hunter. The promotional costs couldn’t have possibly been anywhere near it, either–TBH was advertised during the Super Bowl, even, which was six or seven weeks ago. It was impossible to avoid the promotional blitz. So they probably will lose more money than it cost AMH to make.
I think people are overrating Bullock’s draw at the moment because she’s on a good streak. Even her critically panned movie, All About Steve, overperformed. It remains to be seen whether this is a long-term trend or a short-term run of success.
It is if the next week it makes only 10 and the week after only 3.
Not sure what’s wrong with a $20 million opening – or being beaten by a film going after a completely different demographic.
This movie Bounty has been heavily pimped since BEFORE January. The ad budget itself had to have been insane. Hell, the Superbowl commercial itself would have exhausted what it accrued opening day, so take into account that this piece of schlock was pimped during the SB, the Oscars, AND the Olympics, and several times?! Oh Mama.
.
I’ve never even SEEN an ad for Wimpy Kid. ROFLMAO Yet Aniston’s been in my face non-stop…well, I can’t even tell you when she has NOT been in my face, which is why I need a brain bleaching STAT.
Unless you spend a lot of time staring at the Cartoon Network, who would you expect to see an ad for it?
But, they aren’t really completely different demographics. Last weekend, all those 5 to 12 year olds went to see Wimpy Kid with their tabloid-reading soccer moms. This weekend, those moms will be going to see The Bounty Hunter, if for no other reason than to check out the chemistry between Anniston and Butler.
Yo, is anybody surprised by this? ‘Alice’ was always gonna hold this weekend and ‘Bounty Hunter’ suffered from 1 – Terrible Title and 2 – Poor, cheap-ass trailers which made this thing look like a pilot for a terrible TV show. Gerry Butler obviously doesn’t care about watering down his brand and Jennifer Aniston is not so much a movie star as she is a walking pity-party. This could have been a cool female-male ‘Midnight Run’ but the script wasn’t there. Anyone involved in the production knows this was a rushed movie that needed a HUGE rewrite. ‘Diary’ has a fun book behind it. Kids wanted to see it. Parents didn’t mind taking them. Four-quad. Four-quad. Four-quad.
Nikki, why is Wimpy surpassing Bounty Hunter surprising? every media outlet predicted this will happen, and the crappy reviews assured that.
A.O. Scott slammed Diary of a Wimpy Kid in the NY Times. His reviews are usually spot-on. But kids will go because they love the books.
Took my 10 y.o son & his friend to diary and we all loved it. The rest of the wk’s opening I have no desire to watch.
Bounty Hunter is opening fine! Completely in line with expectations and considering how it was savaged by critics, no one involved should be complaining. In truth, there hasn’t been a good studio rom com in years. That demands craft, insight and originality to overcome the formulaic nature of the genre– not just a sellable hook.
Uh, you wrote, “it’s opening fine…considering how it was savaged by critics?” Well, come on now – let’s NOT be disingenuous. This movie was heavily embargo’d and was UNAVAILABLE to critics or the press, up until 2 days pre-release. It had a free and clear RUN up to opening day, with lots of expensive marketing and PR tomfoolery. Let’s not blame the critics for Aniston fatigue. Love Happens? Management? Anyone?
Love happens and management DID NOT open in wide release and cannot be compared to the bounty hunter.
CKK… If you understood rom coms, most with Aniston…, barely get to 20. The pairing of Heigl and Butler was much more sexy and the “tit for tat” of the marketing was much more intriguing. Bounty hunter got an 8%!!! on RT. Nothing new about the story or that it looks like it was made in the 80s.
Jennifer Anniston has ridden the wave of her divorce and made a career out of it, but everything does come to an end. The media shoved her down our throat and we were supposed to feel sorry for her because her husband left her, and the decision makers have made the mistake of thinking that will translate in box office gold, has not happened.
What I don’t understand is if she is employing the whole Huvane clan, Kevin as her agent and Stephen as her publicist, why can’t Kevin get her a decent script after all he reps Sandy too.
If this happens to be the death nail on her movie career, then Bounty Hunter may have served a purpose.
Actually that is Brangelinas take not Jennifer’s fans. We all have been over the divorce years ago! However Bragenlinas keep it alive with their hate. Honestly if it was any other actress you wouldn’t bother commenting however since it is Jennifer you continue the hate. Matt Damon’s movie for two weeks isn’t making as much as Jennifer’s movie in one week! So why not on his case or Jude Law? Because you can’t stand the fact that Jennifer has moved on and is enjoying her life to the fullest. Jennifer has fans that enjoy her work…Brad has fans that enjoy his work….Angelina has fans that enjoy her work…….isn’t it time for you to move beyond the divorce………
Why are you bringing Angelina and Brad into this thread? That’s usually what Aniston and her PR flack do. As for ‘moving beyond the divorce’ pleas put down the pipe. This woman stalked the double nominated Brangelina duo to the Oscars last year bring Douchebag John Mayer along with her, and she extensively used Jolie and Pitt in her lead-up to that Dog movie, talking about her on Oprah, in magazines from GQ to Vogue. Now, again, that was very smart marketing – maybe she should have had another ‘uncool’ attack on Jolie pre-Bounty Hunter, but the point is, Aniston and her PR will NEVER ‘move beyond,’ she has coattiled on Brangelina for too long, and it’s kept her relevant. Everyone knows that. I mean seriously, do you think we’d be talking about, or hell, even have a thread for Aniston AT ALL if she had married Tate Donovan? Conversely, if Pitt had hooked up with Courtney Cox instead of Aniston, it’d be HER with the fledgling irrelevant over-hyped movie career, but at least, it wouldn’t be as much of a waste of time.
OMG nobody stalked anybody. GET OVER IT!!! Aniston was waaaaay too famous before Pitt. Did Paltrow get this much attention after Pitt or before for that matter? NOOOOOOO If Jen had been an unkown movie star BEFORE hooking up with Pitt, nobody would care about her. She was famous for FRIENDS and had millions of fans from the show. The movies she does are mostly rom-coms and predictable perhaps why she doesn’t get huge box office draws. I am a fan but I don’t watch every single one of her movies there isn’t a single actor for which I run to the movies every time they get something release. I love Johnny Depp but I have no interest in seeing Alice.
Guess that is the difference between the two sets of fans. You will find pretty much all of Angie’s fans support her films regardless of the subject matter. But then again I don’t blame you; Jen has proven over and over again that she has no respect for her craft and is in it strictly for the stardom and and something to do with herself.
Hollywood normally doesn’t care if someone has millions of fans from a TV show. Just ask Kelsey Grammar, Ted Danson, Jason Alexander, Julia Louis-Dreyfus, Teri Hatcher or countless others. Look at the career limbo of the rest of the Friends cast–they’ve had careers consisting of TV shows, or periods in between shows waiting for offers. It’s not unfair to think that maybe if Aniston hadn’t married Pitt and started a production company with him, then her career would be more like almost every other “TV star’s” career.
There are exceptions, of course–George Clooney is no longer remembered as Dr. something from ER. But it’s rare, because Hollywood seems to look down on the “small screen.”
@”are you for real”
There’s hatred for Brad and Angelina, too. More for them, I would say, at least in an absolute sense if not a relative one(ie, they have more haters, but they have a lot more fans, too). Just try to read the comments section at any gossip site. It’s sickening.
I wish more people were like you–just moving on. I never cared about the divorce in the first place, so it’s odd to see so much venom still being spat around five or six years later.
Jennifer should have dumped CAA long ago. Kevin Huvane, Jon Levin have done a TERRIBLE JOB handling her career. She has talent. The Good GIrl showed that. But she has never repeated it.
These HORRIBLE inside packaged CAA projects have made the agency money and flushed her down the toilet. Kevin Huvane has RUINED the careers of many actresses at exactly this point in their career.
Jennifer needs to get out of there.
What happened to The Goree Girls? Great script. CAA wouldn’t let her do it because they want money. They could care less about the careers of these actresses. Kevin Huvane won’t go to bat for them. It’s all about pimping them into vehicles for other talent at their agency. Jennifer Aniston has been packaged into crap and should get out of there. If they cared about her career they would have sent her to a real acting coach and put her in some indie projects.
“Maybe audiences are tiring of these imbecilic romantic comedies? Or these flack-phonied romances between stars leading up to the films’ opening? Stop the stupidity, Hollywood.”
GOD BLESS YOU FOR THAT NIKKI. and I’m not religious. Sure is refreshing to read first thing in the morning. On second thought I would become religious if I knew prayer would be answered and Hollywood would stop making such junk.
Since when didn’t kids movies trump adult films at the Box Office? Alice in Wonderland is the #1 movie for three weeks. And How to Train Your Dragon will be the next winner next week. As for The Bounty Hunter, it got the same treatment by the critics that All About Steve Did and even Sandra Bullock right after the success of The Proposal couldn’t bring in more than $11 million at the box office opening weekend. So $21 Million is a successful opening for The Bounty Hunter. Reviews matter.
True, but Sandy Bullock didn’t whore herself out in the media for 6 months prior to the film’s opening, did she? Nor did All About Steven have a $50 million marketing campaign behind it. Ads for The Bounty Hunter were everywhere. I couldn’t barely load YouTube without some damned Bounty Hunter pop-up ad (there are some types of pop-pups that work despite having your pop-up blocker turned on).
Besides – here’s the thing – what’s going to happen NEXT WEEK after word-of-mouth gets out that the movie is horrible? Will it pull in the usual 50% drop and have a $10 million weekend? I doubt Sony is holding their breath waiting for that to happen.
Bottom line – the movie cost $40 million to make and Sony/Relativity have spent at least another $40-50 million to market it. Are all sources of worldwide revenues REALLY going to see them make their investment back? Keep in mind that Jennifer Aniston movies don’t play well in foreign markets and neither to Butler’s. If the numbers fall next week as many suspect – Sony and Relativity could end up loosing a shitload of money on yet another half-assed Aniston romcom. When the hell are people gonna learn? JENNIFER ANISTON IS NOT A MOVIE STAR!
So what about Angelina’s movie Changeling and Mighty Heart! I mean Mighty Heart only made 5 million??????? hate to hate………lol
A Mighty Heart may not have been a box office hit, but it was a critical success. Angelina was nominated for Golden Globe, SAG, Critic’s Choice and Independent Spirit Awards.
As for Changeling, it made the most money of all the movies nominated for Best Actress. It grossed $112,994,004 worldwide.
Let me put it it this way. The AFI is likely to honor Jolie before Aniston. Name a movie character Aniston has played that has been memorable.
The Blind Side of course beat out The Changeling for that record.
I hated those films and not because they were bad but because the subject matter was hard to take. But those were passion projects, you know something you have a passion to do because of that very same subject matter. I don’t think Jen would know passion if it bit her on her surgically reduced nose. And one has to wonder if she even knows comedy.
I thought bounty hunter would make more because the promotion was everywhere. There was no escaping from the trailer , posters , or the Jennifer aniston butt kissing all over the damn place. I’m happy it didn’t open huge.
Leave Jennifer alone! She is really cute. If she made a porn flick with J-Lo, it would out gross Avatar.
GOT. TO. GET. IMAGE. OUT. OF. MY. HEAD!!!
No it wouldn’t. Pervs would just download it to enjoy in the privacy of their homes.
Hmmmm Nikki your hate for Aniston is palpable here. Every single website predicting box office for this weeken had those numbers (more or less 20M). Why is it suppose to be embarrassing?? It actually opened to those numbers because of the promos. These films usually rely on the stars because there are no guns, no special effects, no 3D, etc. Rom-coms are very predictable and tougher to sell. Embarrassing would be if the production budget is 100M (a la Green zone) and it opened at 14M. Diary of a wimpy kid looks like crap from Tv comercials (I am not the demographic) but it was an incredibly famous series of books. Every kid I know owns it. It is actually shocking this fims didn’t opened to higher numbers. That’s probably because the trailer made seem like a stup!d film. Most people that rush to the theaters are fans of the books.
Why is this embarrassing? I think people grossly underestimated just how popular the WIMPY KID books are, they’ve sold millions of copies, plus they’re like the Pixar of kids books in that they’re beloved both by children and adults. “Bounty Hunter” looked like dreck from minute one, and people recognize that.
Remember in the late 90s/early 2000s, Amanda Peet was being pushed as the next big thing? That is Jennifer Aniston now with a bigger PR budget. She is not that talented to get this much pub.
Amanda Peet is so empty and boring like Aniston. Agree.
