EXCLUSIVE: The world’s oldest story is on a collision course with cutting-edge Hollywood technology. I’m told that Paramount Pictures and former Walden Media co-founder Cary Granat producing with Reel Fx are mounting In The Beginning, a 3D telling of the creation story. The film is using The Book of Genesis as its primary resource. A script has been written by John Fusco (Hidalgo), and directing will be TV vet David Cunningham. This pair had teamed with Granat on a Walden film that never happened, Rebels: The Green Mountain Boys. Reel Fx is spearheading the visuals and will soon turn over test footage the filmmakers hope will prompt a green light. Paramount will co-finance and distribute.
I’m told the $30 million film will use 3-D visuals to transform the oft-told tale into a spectacle that the filmmakers hope will attract family- and faith-based audiences that flocked to The Lion, The Witch, and the Wardrobe, that first Chronicles of Narnia installment made on Granat’s Walden watch. I hear Granat pitched the film by claiming that the Adam And Eve story has never really been told by a feature film. (At least not since John Huston.) The Genesis tale of creation took a week that began with God creating light, culminating with Adam and Eve on Day Six, and a day of rest on Day Seven. But I can guarantee you this film is going to take more than a week to make. Where’s Cecil B DeMille when Hollywood needs him.

Genesis Chapter 2 verse 5 and Genesis Chapter 2 verse 18 show that Adam and Eve came before plants and animals while Genesis Chapter 1 verse 12 says Adam and Eve came after plants and animals.
Why culminate creation of Adam and Eve on day six when the later chapter shows them being created on day three?
It’d be much more interesting for Adam and Eve to watch while life magically pops into existence around them.
“…a 3D telling of the creation story.” should be “…a 3D telling of a creation story.”
This is fantastic and such an original idea.
Think of the branding….
Think of the young minds to mold and shape….
This must be a selfless project….
Non Profit….Yes??
I’m just wondering if the movie is going to pay lip service to The Bible. [EXAMPLE: Kubrick's version of "The Shining" used elements but barely grasped the true plot intricacies brought to life in the novel by Stephen King. He took a great deal of artistic license--which is Kool and the Gang when making a cinematic piece--and produced a great film. But it was not an accurate screen portrayal of the written word--some elements, of course, but overall not even close.]
So…I’m curious as to whether Paramount and former Walden Media co-founder Cary Granat is going to try to portray the Bible’s version of Genesis, or invoke artistic license to make a Hollywood blockbuster that caters to teh special effects appeal and is ultimately geared towards box office take and Oscar nominations for the “shock and awe” value it gleans from its incredulous uniquity.
Great to see people in Hollywood using technology to produce the most popular story ever told in print and as as #1 top selling book. John Huston did the Bible in 1966 and Mel Gibson did the Passion in 2004 to huge box office acclaim. Maybe someone in Hollywood will produce the book of Revelation to beat out Avatar as an epic, it’s a better script and a sight more scary with loads of effect.

Hey xtr: “African American”? Don’t you mean just African? Sorry, but this bothers me. People have become so brainwashed by political correctness that people will say African American whenever they mean black, even if the person in question is actually African (or Jamaican, or Haitian, or Black-English, or otherwise black and in no way American). At this point political correctness stops being sensitive and actually becomes more offensive than it would have been to have just said “black” when you meant it.
Well put. LOL If I told someone I was Scottish-American…say, a Scot for instance…I’d get beaten with a knotted up kilt. Or should be, anyway.
So it would be ok for Charlize Theron to play Eve? She IS African American…
Oy vey is right.
SERIOUSLY?! ok, how ’bout this: You can make a movie about the Book of Genesis, but if God doesn’t appear for a cameo you have to summarily end religion and get to work making the world a better place for ALL.
Is this a joke?
Dude thats like way cool!

This is going to be so stupid. Get over your fairy tales already.
I hear God is tech unavail, I just checked him out for the new Taylor Lautner vehicle.
Plus he’s offer only, he won’t even read.
I hear there is no script, the producers are literally using the first 100 pages or so of the bible…word for word…
I think it’s grate , cant wait for more Christian Movies to be maid , I hope it will be an accurate account , like the Passion , we need to see more of the TRUTH Visual…Thanks..Elf
“made”
not to mention, “great.”
Just another fairy tail I guess they will just ignore the story of Lilith, Adams first wife.
I didn’t realize fairies had tails? Do they use their tails to sprinkle magic dust?
By the way, one would have to ignore the story of Lilith, because it is nonexistent. You would know this if you’d taken a minute to do some simple research.
Will the Catholics say what ends up on the cutting floor? Which version will be used; King James? New King James? NIV? on & on & on?
Let me guess, The New King Hollywood version. This ought to be a real good comedy when finished. A left wing slant on contradictory right wing material. Or is that a right wing slant on left wing material? Hurry up please, I can’t wait to laugh at you west coast boneheads.
I’m an atheist and I think this is a fantastic idea, it will highlight exactly how ridiculous this story is. I’m really excited to see the serpent with legs. Maybe this will also make people think harder about the fact that Genesis implies that all humans are products of incest.
I would disagree with the article that this is ‘the world’s oldest story,’ it’s predated by a number of other creation myths including Assyria, Ancient Egypt, and Sumeria.
3D is here to stay. It’s coming to our living rooms in video games, sports and documentaries (to start) and will become expected at our movie theaters. It’s not all about the “wow” or shock-and-awe factor. That will fade but the overall feeling of witnessing something closer to reality than we’ve seen in art before will remain for a long time. Remember this simple rule…replace the words “sound” and “color” with “3D” any time you talk about it and know that any statement that is true for the former will become true for the latter. Just like some films have more interesting sound and color that get noticed, even years from now artists will still be able to create new visuals that will make spectacular use of 3D.
Now can someone tell me how you become a “former Walden Media co-founder?” Edison isn’t the “former” inventor of the light bulb yet and he’s dead. Once you’ve founded something, it’s founded. No one can unfound it.
Oh puhleez. 3D is all about the wow factor, a sensuous experience. And the concept of what constitutes “reality” is debatable. 3D will be terrific for sensation laden games and experiences. It has little to do with filmmaking. You mentioned “visuals”. Yeah, that. Nothing to do with storytelling.
Take away Cameron’s 3D and what is left?
Cecil B.DeMille said, “Give me any two pages of the Bible and I’ll give you a picture.” But if the good Walden folks dare make the FULL story of Genesis, midrash and all, the Fundies will be all over them.
I am sure that the Walden folk wouldn’t know Midrash if they stumbled over it. You’re kidding, right?
This will be a winner, as long as there are lots of car chases, explosions, and maybe a wise-cracking ferret voiced by Whoopi Goldberg.
looking forward to it. I wonder what they will do with Genesis 1: 6-8.
Water above the sky? Pre-flood aquasphere? Hope so.
Another look into current interpretations of 5000 year old fairy tales. I wonder if there will be a talking snake with legs. Also curious to see how they portray an “all knowing” being who gets a nasty surprise.
So humans evolved from African Americans? America is somehow a million or more years old? Interesting
Kirk Cameron cast as Adam. Ray Comfort could be Eve.
The snake could be played by Richard Dawkins.
I would pay to see that!
It should definitely be in 3D!! Good going Paramount. Just image the apples coming at you from the screen. And the serpent. Can’t forget that sneaky little bugger. I wonder if Adam and Eve will be naked through the film or will they have little leaves covering their private parts, like the way it was in real life??
I like 3D movie!
