EXCLUSIVE: The Green Day-fueled American Idiot doesn’t bow on Broadway until April 20. Already, talks are underway with Playtone partners Tom Hanks and Gary Goetzman to turn the musical into a feature film. American Idiot uses the songs of punk band Green Day to tell the coming of age story of three small-town guys. One joins the armed forces, another moves to the city and gets mired in a drug habit, the third stays home and gets his girlfriend pregnant. There is little dialogue beyond the Green Day tunes. The musical is directed by Spring Awakening’s Michael Mayer, the music supervisor is Tom Kitt and Green Day and its lead singer/songwriter Billie Joe Armstrong were very involved. The musical first opened at Berkeley Repertory Theatre, with Tom Hulce and Ira Pittelman producing, and it begins previews this week at the St. James Theatre.
Playtone’s last stage-to-screen transfer was the Abba musical Mamma Mia! Critics might not have loved it, but audiences sure did. The film grossed $610 million worldwide, becoming one of the biggest hits in Universal Pictures history. Hanks and Goetzman have a first-look deal at Universal, but the producers will sew up the movie rights before giving the studio first crack, I hear. They just set up Larry Crowne at Universal, with Hanks directing and starring with Julia Roberts.
Universal, which keeps threatening to start movement on a feature version of the stage hit Wicked, is on a faster track with In The Heights, hiring Kenny Ortega to direct a movie version that is expected to star the show’s creator, Lin-Manuel Miranda, as the bodega owner who plans to use a lottery windfall to retire on a beach in the Dominican Republic. New Line is turning the Broadway musical Rock of Ages into a film, with Chris D’Arienzo adapting his book into a script and directing a coming of age story that is homage to hair band anthems.
All of this indicates that the movie musical’s heart is still beating, despite the box office disappointment of Nine last year.

Let it lie…
The only people that wanna see this musical/film are Green Day and KROQ.
Thats not true, and its kinda sad when a teenager has to tell you that.
wow- impressive- olivier sultan and george lane at CAA really are the best- no matter what WME does, they still are the kings
Nice to see you posting George. Your family thinks you’re great too!
Count me in as the third viewer. Certainly more intriguing than another listless superhero film like the story above.
Nine bombed because… it sucked. The only thing that svaed the Broadway show was Tommy Tune’s LIVE performance. The musical itself has no memorable songs.
Er…Tommy Tune Directed Nine on Broadway, he didn’t appear in it. That was Raul Julia.
Tom Hanks: the REAL American Idiot. This will sink like a rock. I refuse to pay to see anything associated with either Green Day or Tom Hanks.
AaronSch, doing his best Whiskey/Avatar impression… the album sold more than 14 million copies…
Yeah….cause Broadway plays are soooo punk.
So clearly all of those 14 million will line up for a movie…based on a play….based on a punk(ish) album.
Ouch my head hurts…and without a mosh pit in sight.
Tom Hanks: the REAL American. This will rock. I will pay to see anything associated with either Green Day or Tom Hanks.
please make it fast so John Gallagher can star in it.
This sounds like a relatively low risk addition to the canon of many “rock films” enjoyed by fans for many generations.
It falls into the category of films with the music of a single artist. Other examples are: Across The Universe, Once, One Trick Pony, Quadrophenia, The Wall, Tommy, Detroit Rock City, Give My Regards To Broadstreet and Glitter.
Where is the Jersey Boys movie?
Is there anything that makes me yawn faster than hearing the name Tom Hanks? I think not.
hell yeahh get the american idiot movie made that would be ace
I hope that you’ll respect de history and the characters of the original video Jesus of Suburbia. I trust on him, I hope they won’t disappoint the real fans
.
“American Idiot” is actually Hank’s forthcoming JFK assassination project, with which he’s hoping to sell the knee-slapper that Oswald acted alone.
I hear Gary Sinise penned the treatment in between leading his local Boy Scout Troop on training-mission searches for Bin Laden in Laurel Canyon.
American Idiot? Is Glenn Beck making his feature film debut?
No such luck. However It will be featuring 3 rich rockstars posing as underground punk rockers. Rolling Stone tells me their expecting an ‘edgy’ performance. In other news I may have just sharted…a little in my pants
I would have agreed that this would be a very risky move if I hadn’t seen the stage version of “American Idiot” at the Berkeley Rep last fall myself. While the plot isn’t original (that didn’t exactly work against Avatar’s popularity, did it), the tone and texture are electrifying. The backdrop of Green Day music opens up a window to the soul of this generation, not unlike the unconventional music from “Hair” exposed the generation of its day.
Don’t count this one out. If they do it right, it won’t just be entertaining, it will be IMPORTANT.
p.s. If you’re in or going to NYC, do whatever you have to and get tickets to the stage version.
Tom Hanks did a great job with the “Band of Brothers” series. Other than that, I have little to say. Green Day is a pack of no-longer-juvenile-so-they-have-no-excuse-to-be-idiots delinquents with a fat bank roll. This latest endeavor ranks down there with drunken fart lighting gone tragically mainstream. American idiots? No shortage. Just my opinion. Happy 4th all!
This is awsome
Oh my god, i cant wait to see this movie. i am a huge fan of green day so i wanna see it very badly.and if billie joe does play saint jimmy that would be great.i think billie is sexy and hot!
