Before Tom Cruise chose Knight and Day as his follow-up to Valkyrie, he had every studio custom-tailoring as Cruise vehicles films that included the DreamWorks action film Motorcade, The Tourist (which rebounded as a Johnny Depp-Angelina Jolie vehicle), a teaming with Denzel Washington in the Robert Ludlum novel adaptation The Matarese Circle, the Suzanne Bier-directed romantic comedy Lost for Words, and the Warner Bros action film The 28th Amendment. Before Cruise and Cameron Diaz circled Knight and Day, I read a draft of the script when the producers were after Chris Tucker and Eva Mendes to play the leads and the film went by the titles Wichita and Trouble Man. I have to admit, the script back then had plot holes, that maybe got patched. Trailers never tell the whole story, but it looks like Cruise chose well. And with another Mission: Impossible film in the offing, will Cruise recapture his star standing?

Cruise’s star is permanently damaged.
Wouldn’t be so sure. Valkyrie still did respectable B.O. against brutal competition, terrible pre-release buzz, and a depressing ending that everybody knew going in.
This, on the other hand, is a mainstream action comedy with a high-profile summer release spot. And it looks entertaining.
Yeah, his star is permanently damaged… just like Hugh Grant after that hooker, Eddie Murphy after that transvestite, Marv Albert after the sodomy, Roman Polanski after the rape, Mel Gibson after the drunken tirade, Nick Nolte after the drunk driving, Halle Berry after the hit and run, Robert Downey Jr. after the drug binges and jail time, Kelsey Grammer after the cocaine bust, Ben Affleck after the rehab for alcoholism, Tim Allen after the coke bust and turning state’s evidence, as well as everyone involved in the “career ending film” BONFIRE OF THE VANITIES (including Bruce Willis, Morgan Freeman and Tom Hanks).
If you think anything is permanent in this town, you haven’t been here very long.
Normally I’m not interested in Cruise or Diaz, but I have to admit this looks fun. Cruise gets to do the action thing and look like he’s not taking himself too seriously – which is way more charming than what seems to be his real-life persona. Diaz in a standard role, not much to say there. Kind of hoping it’s entertaining and they get a win.
I really don’t get the Cruise hate. This looks hilarious though. He was great in Tropic Thunder.
Yes, the trailer actually makes the movie look promising.
Cruise should move into comedy at this point in his career, rather than the hero-against-all-odds stuff he has done in the past. The comedy works for him and plays against character. I think it will work with audiences too.
Cool trailer. Cruise is still creepy though.
Forget about Cruise’s personal problems for a moment and lets just talk about him as an actor. Sure he is no DeNiro, Daniel Day Lewis caliber actor but there was a time when he was a true movie star. Movies like Jerry Maguire, Magnolia, Top Gun, A Few Good Men, The Firm, The Color of Money where he displayed true movie star charisma. This trailer is the first time in years that I have seen Cruise act like a true movie star and reminds me why we all loved him in the first place. I hope it does well.
Yes, he was once a huge movie star. Yes, he was funny in Tropic Thunder. Yes, he is still creepy.
As someone who hated Tom Cruise years before it became mainstream, I do have to admit that this film looks genuinely amusing. No, it doesn’t diminish the fact that Cruise is still creepy, but Tropic Thunder shows that he’s capable of getting past himself and delivering a decent performance.
The title doesn’t inspire much confidence, but this actually looks pretty fun. It seems to be aiming for a similar vibe as True Lies or Mr. and Mrs. Smith.
This could be a big July 4th hit with adults eager for something other than Twilight or The Last Airbender.
It looks like it contains all the best moments from other Cruise movies like a greatest hits album. Might work, but I feel like I’ve seen it before.
Nothing in Hollywood is ever permanently anything. Nothing or no one there is ever permanently damaged.
Cruise has a well deserved reputation for choosing his scripts well and delivering in his performances.
Oh my gosh, I can’t shut up, I know I said I could. But this is the coolest!
Tom Cruise, Legend, Magnolia, Valkyrie, Knight and Day, what next? He can’t stop, he is a Shark In The Water in Collateral, oh man. People better respect.
That movie looks a lot like “Mr. & Mrs. Smith”. Same old hollywood rehash.
It’s not a typical Hollywood rehash. It’s a Hollywood rehash of the French movie “Anthony Zimmer”.

I seem to be the only one on this thread who knows this…
looks like a really entertaining ride. i love that he’s paired up with cameron diaz and doing the role he does so well: cocky but with a heart. id really love to see him in motorcade too, but i think he needs to start taking back the roles george clooney has taken from him. he does it way better than george. up in the air wouldve killed with tom cruise doing it. and i really think tom needs to make a really kick ass action flick, edgy like days of thunder and top gun was back in their day. knight and day’s a good step though and i look forward to seeing it.
I saw the trailer on tv last night. Between this flick and The Bounty Hunter I’m a little tired of studios trying – and failing badly – to recreate the crazy chemistry of Jolie & Pitt in Mr. & Mrs. Smith. That was lightning in a bottle folks. Let it go and for God’s sake get some new ideas!
Really liking this trailer.
Cruise looks great. So over Diaz. Have been for years.
Cruise is still huge and has international appeal as well, sorry haters
He’s still short. He’s still thin skinned. He’s still controlling. He’s still a weirdly cultish Scientologist. Even if this movie were good, so are others. I won’t help Tom Cruise make money. I flat out find him repugnant.
How is this any different than THE KILLERS? Both look awful.
He *was* awesome in Tropic Thunder. “Player!” Maybe best role of his career since sliding around to Bob Seger.
What publicist asked you to blog positively about this film? The hype is transparent.
I know the premise seems stupid, and I am sure it is full of plot holes, but it looks like a lot of fun, and isn’t that what we really want in a summer blockbuster?
It is not like anyone is going into this expecting the next Hamlet.
What this looks like is one of the Bourne movies, but from the point of view of the girl. Great idea.
And both trailers I’ve seen from it look terrific.
“What number would you like?”

Cruise is nuts but this looks like a good choice. It’s “fun.” I do HATE when Diaz is on the motorcycle and says “mags” – so cliche’ and LAME… even if her character is a capable “shooter”
This is fascinating only as supremely calculated Cruise rebranding, with subtle adjustments to his public identity for the dopey moviegoer, similar to the Katie Holmes lookalike casting in MI3 being timed with his wedding. This is Hollywood personality product rebooting without match, which makes it very interesting. It is however, tired as hell:
the scene with counting to 1,2,3: directly from the scene in the bank in Dark Knight. ‘Where did you learn to count?’
the lying down on a car while one passes over top was from Wanted.
And so on.
As the world changes, this kind of material will not last. It will make money around the world, as it is essentially catch phrases and stunts, but it is very poor film making and not forward thinking. This is middle aged film making. Young people will not care. Tom Cruise should actually lean into his android quality and devote himself to thoughtful and freaky sci-fi with no female leads.
In this economy, who, here in the US, would pay fourteen dollars to watch this?
I am 46, overweight, bald, and graying. Why do I want to spend money to see the 48 year old Tom Cruise, who has barely aged since Risky Business and All The Right Moves?
I think you answered your own question dude.
46, overweight, bald, and graying?
Try losing weight, working out, hair implants, and hair dye. It’s worked for Cruise.
Aside from digital effects, the movie looks like it just crawled out of 1995. Made by old people for old people? Is it too late to make it in 3-D?
