Before Tom Cruise chose Knight and Day as his follow-up to Valkyrie, he had every studio custom-tailoring as Cruise vehicles films that included the DreamWorks action film Motorcade, The Tourist (which rebounded as a Johnny Depp-Angelina Jolie vehicle), a teaming with Denzel Washington in the Robert Ludlum novel adaptation The Matarese Circle, the Suzanne Bier-directed romantic comedy Lost for Words, and the Warner Bros action film The 28th Amendment. Before Cruise and Cameron Diaz circled Knight and Day, I read a draft of the script when the producers were after Chris Tucker and Eva Mendes to play the leads and the film went by the titles Wichita and Trouble Man. I have to admit, the script back then had plot holes, that maybe got patched. Trailers never tell the whole story, but it looks like Cruise chose well. And with another Mission: Impossible film in the offing, will Cruise recapture his star standing?

The gag about going on the count of three has been done. Two films I can cite off the top of my head: Gibson and Glover in Lethal Weapon; and of course the Holy Hand Grenade in Monty Python and the Holy Grain.
Why exactly is this getting a post on Deadline? There is zero business information here, just some random navel-gazing about a past-his-prime action star (yes, once one of the very biggest of all-time) and a rehashed spy game plotline. Will this make some money? Yes. Will it be completely forgotten after week two? Yes. Will Cruise fans show up for it? Some. Will it relaunch Cruise (or Diaz) as a major movie star? No. (Is there really any question about this?) Are any of these questions particularly interesting? No.
Tom Cruise does not need to bounce back. he is a huge movie star. Yes he unfortunately happens to be in a cult but he is a big time star none the less. He’s done some films that didn’t do all that well but everyone has. He is not in need of a comeback, because he was never not on top. That being said he’s a bit of a weirdo
The title is horrible.
I’d rather see Knight and Day score more than The Killers – so sick of both Heigl and Kutcher. and actually agree that trying to reinvent another Mr. and Mrs. Smith – will not happen.
Would love to see Cameron Diaz in more action roles and less dramedy / romcom roles.
Cruise is weird, don’t think he has an audience either.
I LOVE THIS TRAILER AND CANNOT WAIT TO SEE IT — tom cruise chose wisely.
Minority of One: I think the trailer is a mess because the movie is a mess. Two white dwarfs doing kookie/cute/hair flip is going to be playing to a lot of empty seats.
this is gonna be a hit! no doubt about it
Nikki, I read Wichita. I agree. This feels nothing like it. It will open huge.
Buddy of mine worked on the film. Said Tom’s magnetism was undeniable and Cameron was nice.
Title still sucks. Should have just called it Cruz on Cruise.
I wonder how they fixed the height different between Cruise and Diaz. Budget include infinite shoe lifts?
No, Scientology has taught him to levitate, remember? It works out great as long as we don’t see them together in a long shot.
This film is EXACTLY like the new Kutcher/Heoigle film, “The Killers.”
Even more interesting is the amazing similarity between “The Losers” and “The A-Team.” Those films are opening just weeks apart and “The Losers” has a much better trailer.
I cannot WAIT for this movie! It looks so much fun!!
You’d have to pay me to go see this midget scientologist lunatic in anything. I’ve never understood his appeal or Diaz’s for that matter. I feel sorry for his poor wife who can’t even go to the bathroom in public without her scientologist handler. What a bunch of weirdos.
Why the fixation on this guys’ height? What — is he playing in the NBA? Steve McQueen is lauded — I love the guy, R.I.P, my man — but I don’t believe he was day over 5’9. And I don’t care. As long as I can buy into the essence of whom Tom Cruise portrays, the mickey-fickey can be three feet for all I care.
Go pick up your money, Tom but leave them couches alone.;-)
Cruise is a huge star. Why would anybody think otherwise? Not a fan but come on, personal life aside (and it’s irrelevant anyway) who would you suggest is truly bigger, globally?
Will Smith.
A — fucking — men! The dude has talent.
The trailer looks fun. Even though it isn’t the most original subject matter. I’ll see this for the director. James Mangold. He did great work with Identity, Walk The Line and 3:10 To Yuma.
Tom Cruise isn’t the best actor but I still like him, even though he is nuts and creepy and brainwashed and apart of a cult designed by a science-fiction writer to make money. That said, I will check this film out.
Cameron Diaz I kinda like too. She’s a hot little MILF so I’d go see her in this.
Nobody has mentioned the most fascinating aspect of this. Think about the premise of the film: he’s a pro who seems to have lost touch with reality. The powers that be have written him off, but by the end, he wins us over because he’s funny, he’s charming, and his chief talent (in the movie, fighting bad guys) is still intact.
In other words, Tom Cruise is playing himself, and his character’s circumstances are metaphorically like his own. If the film makes money (and I think it will), it might do more than re-establish his box office might; it might just make Tom Cruise’s eccentricities more palatable.
Great move by Team Cruise.
