EXCLUSIVE: Tom Selleck is negotiating to return to episodic TV in the first hour-long drama he has headlined since Magnum, P.I. And he’s back with CBS. I’m told that Selleck is close to a deal to star in Reagan’s Law, a drama about three generations of a stories New York cop family. Len Cariou will play the family patriarch, an ex-chief of police. Selleck will play his son Michael, a handsome widower who is the current NYPD chief of police. Donnie Wahlberg will play his son, a detective who returned to the force after a tumultuous stint as a captain in Iraq. The series is casting up quickly — Flex Alexander and Bridget Moynihan seem likely to get roles — and Michael Cuesta will direct a pilot that’ll shoot later this month for CBS Television. Studios Leonard Goldberg, Mitchell Burgess & Robin Green are the exec producers.
Selleck hasn’t headlined an hour-long drama since ending his signature role on Magnum, P.I., which ran from 1980-1988. Selleck most recently played a recurring character on Las Vegas, and has done multi-episode arcs on Las Vegas, Boston Legal and Friends, and starred in the half-hour sitcom The Closer. He has also played lawman Jesse Stone in periodic telepics based on the mystery series by the late author Robert B. Parker.

Tom has always had an open door to do whatever series (Friends, LasVegas) or MOW (Jesse Stone) he wanted to work on with the studios. He’s bankable at any age. The question remains his desire to work. He’s set with his ranch out here in Lake Sherwood (I think it’s Dean Martin’s old place) for several lifetimes. While he may be a bit of a terse fellow, he’s a pro with chops that surpass Clooney. Dude is money, and I’m sure the series (please rename it!) will be a solid flyover land hit.

Perhaps so, but the situation as described in this column and elsewhere offers rich story opportunities. The demographics of urban police forces usually represents the demographics of a city as they were seventy five years before the date of measurement. A multi-generational NYPD series has a lot to offer in narrative and backstory. In this one, the grandfather would have been in a responsible position in the Knapp Commission/Serpico and Leuci era in NYPD. There are certainly people in New York and other cities with police forces dealing with their pasts who’d watch. If the series is done right it can deal with a whole lot of human nature in an institutional setting.
Mark Harmon couldn’t throw a football and still can’t act after all these year. Yikes..don’t compare him to TS.
And I just heard one of those right-wing slimethrowers saying that Republicans can’t get work in Hollywood: Selleck, Stallone, Willis, Miller, S, Baldwin, Eastwood, and many more Repugs are working all the time. But, right-wingers make their own truth as they go along anyway.
I have just read this and I am very happy.Love Tomm Selleck. He is a great actor and he will be perfect for this role.
This show looks excellent. Robin Green and Mitchell Burgess were both executive producers on the Sopranos which was fantastic. The cast looks excellent, especially Selleck and Wahlberg. And Selleck has a huge fanbase.
Tom Selleck and Donnie Wahlberg are both hot!!! Hotness for the ages right there baby!
Used to watch Magnum PI when I was little. First time I figured out that boys could actually be important! Hubba hubba. I think Tom Selleck is even sexier now as he gets older. This series looks really good.
So, I was just saying today that “Tom Selleck is so hot and that I have a crush on him…” My husband’s reply was, “honey, everyone has a crush on Tom Selleck!”
Tom Selleck has played so many roles so well over the years I can only expect another good performance.
I happen to think that Tom Sellect is perfect for this role, as far as the title, leave it alone.. Lets face it, Selleck is a hunk, and anyone that doesn’t think so is jealous of his looks and his acting ability!!!
I’m thrilled to see Tom finally do a primetime 1 hour show.I have missed him greatly since Magnum.Keep the ugly comments to yourself and leave more room for the true fans. He’s a great actor and the most handsome guy in showbiz still alive!
