I actually think they were being too nice in this interview. I wasn’t expecting them to slam Leno’s image into the ground, but they seems to skim the topic.
This is what fear looks like on television. Letterman has been destroyed by Leno for the past 17 years, and now hes trying to hang on to the one thing that could save face for him.
He might have been cheating on his wife with X amount of girlfriends for X amount of years.. but at least Leno was mean to Conan.
It was fun watching the whole thing unfold and truly Jimmy may have won some new viewers thanks to it all..
Frankly, it seemed to give an extra zing to all of the writers rooms except Leno.
But just like I am not really a fan of mean shows (Everybody Love Raymond), NBC has bought the mean guy Leno, which makes it difficult to watch him now.
Anyone with me on this?
Who the hell does Jimmy Kimmel think he is? Simply put, you go out with your buddies for a night of hanging and drinking, let’s say there are eight of you. I’d say Jimmy is funnyman number six out of those eight.
Kimmel is dying to be cool. He runs to Letterman like a little biatch boy. Seriously, Jimmy is not funny, do we remember when his show started he was wearing no tie? Then came the tie. This guy is the ultimate follower. Another example of the mediocracy of our times. Another Mr. Interchangeable.
Leno is the easiest target, Jimmy. Why? I’m not sure. He has more fans than cool Jimmy and Dave put together. Sorry but the ratings prove it. Wouldn’t Jimmy be really cool if he took a stand and said, “hey, Jay was a fantastic comic, and is the top guy we like to go to bed with every night.” Instead, Jimmy goes on Leno then plays biatch boy on Dave.
It’s time to boycott JKL. Before we boycott LKL. Get rid of this guy. Give an unknown smart comic a chance in the slot. Jimmy, your interviews are terrible. You’re not good looking (you’re bloated) and you do not wear a suit well. Be yourself. I’d have more respect and interest if you could do a show in jeans and an izod. The real Jimmy Kimmel.

Conan’s ratings suck so NBC pulls the plug. How did Jay “steal” his old job back? By making people not tune in for Conan?
C’mon people… Conan rocks, but do you know anyone who was actually watching his show? No — and neither were you.
And Letterman saying that no one got hurt except NBC… just not true Dave. For those six months Leno was gone, you were winning your time period. But not anymore… sucks to be second fiddle again. But keep griping about it like you don’t care…

Exactly. That fact, which Conan fans refuse to acknowledge, is the reason his show is not still on. Most of his fans stopped watching after a week or two, long before The Jay Leno Show started, by the way.

Why it’s called Show Business, peeps. This is a business, not ‘let’s get Dad’s barn and put on a show that maybe amuses our family and friends.’
If you don’t bring in an audience and the network can’t sell advertising, then it doesn’t matter how cool and hip and funny you are.
If you can bring in an audience and the network sells spots, again, it doesn’t matter how cool and hip and funny you are or aren’t.
It’s all about the benjamins.
And what about the 10pm time slot going up 45% after Leno left? Clearly, the affliates were right, Leno was ratings killer for both the news AND Conan.
Leno hasn’t pulled a 45% improvement over Conan’s Tonight Show…he just had the larger buy out contract.
Leno’s show was dull, dull, dull….and frankly looked like he was trying to tank it on purpose it was so dull. Suddenly he comes back at 11:30pm with skits and zingers that he claimed he would do at 10pm.
It’s laughable to say Jay “stole” Conan’s job. Conan didn’t bring the numbers and lets face it, being after Jay’s Tonight show couldn’t have been that hard cause Jimmy Fallon is doing it! Jay is #1 again.
Gotta’ respect that…
A few things;
~Leno has never been a ‘fantastic comic’. Average to below-par is a better description of Leno’s comedic abilities- poor jokes, lack of spontaneous wit; i can’t recall him ever making me laugh out loud.
~Leno may not have ‘stolen’ Conan’s spot. No, one needs balls and a little chutpah to ‘steal’ anything. He instead kiss-as$ed his way into being Carson’s replacement, then like a chicken-shit he didn’t stand up for himself or his ‘home’ when they said they’d replace him, and THEN he crawled back to them like the obeying lil’puppy he is when they threw him a bone and gave him the show back. Pathetic.
~Unlike Leno, i seriously think Letterman stopped giving a crap about ratings a long time ago. The guy makes his millions whether his 2nd or 15th. The guy also owns the rights to his own show, as well as other shows, so he’s almost certainly richer than Leno, today and in the long-run. So, yeah i don’t think Letterman cares if more ‘real’ americans love Leno more.

That’s just where you’re wrong. If Letterman didn’t care he’d stop talking about it. Leno certainly wasn’t taking shots at him when Rome was burning at NBC.
It shouldn’t even be a blip on his radar… but alas, Dave’s enjoyed the catbird seat these last 9 months — and now it’s time to hand it back.
No one was watching Conan because no one was watching Jay Leno @ 10pm!!!!! No one wanted to see that at 10 pm. NBC made huge errors in programming and Conan paid for it.
What’s great is the first name in the headline is Jimmy (Kimmel) and not one comment about him. Exactly. Mr. Interchangeable.

I watched Conan, but I didn’t do it religiously. Most of Conan’s fans aren’t like the old baby boomers who tuned in to Leno five nights a week. We tend to channel surf. But giving Leno the 10:00 pm spot five nights a week was the most bone-headed move that NBC ever made. Leno didn’t even try to make his show funny, he just did an earlier version of his Tonight show.
Wherever Coco is going, I’m sure he’ll try to own a piece of his show and will try to have his lawyers write a better contract for him. His comedy tour has already sold out in some venues and, supposedly, will be filmed for a documentary. I guess he’s already learning from his NBC experience.
I actually watched Conan when he started on The Tonight Show. I stopped watching two weeks after he started. I had been a fan of his since he started the 12:30 show. I stopped watching The Tonight Show because Conan wasn’t Conan anymore–the suits (and Zucker) neutered him–and took his edge. I don’t blame Leno I blame NBC suits.
As far as Kimmel is concerned–this mess got him into the headlines and now, you can see his flop sweat because no one is paying attention to him anymore. Face it Kimmel, you were barely funny before all of this and now you are just what you look like–a backstabbing weasel of a pathetic person. Letterman doesn’t care anymore–I actually watch Fallon now–and he’s getting better each day.

I think I would start doing something I never did: Watch Jay Leno at late night tv. The lesser creepy guy on the late hours.
The fact that anyone is still making the “it was Conan’s fault” argument is silly. The affiliates revolted over Leno’s 10 pm ratings, not Conan’s ratings. It was Leno’s failure at 10 pm that set the whole drama into motion. NBC was determined to not have Leno compete against Conan head-to-head at 11:30 and they were willing to cripple the future of their late night franchise in order to redeem the franchise in the short term. It’s only NBC’s “fault” to the extent that they made a promise to Conan in 2004 that they obviously weren’t in a position to keep. But you can’t blame NBC for acting like a proft-driven enterprise, which is exactly what they are. If Leno’s a bigger draw than Conan for advertising bucks at 11:30, then it makes sense for NBC to back Leno. You CAN blame Leno, however, for being ungracious and showing absolutely no respect for a fellow performer who paid his dues. Leno was losing to Letterman 7 months into his run. He only got to become the King of late night because he was given a chance to find his footing. He could have given Conan that chance, and he chose not to, even though Conan played back up quarterback to him for 16 years. Pure disrespect. Leno deserves every negative thing that’s been written about him. He got fired by NBC twice, and was still willing to do whatever it took to get the boss man to like him. Leno’s an overweight 60 year old man, he can’t keep up his pace forever, and when he finally gives up the hosting gig NBC will have to face the unpleasant reality that they have no successor ready. Letterman will be retired by then, and Conan’s Fox program will be well-positioned to become the favourite late night show of Gen Y. Ultimately, everyone gets what they deserve.
