New Line has set a summer start date on the third installment of the Harold & Kumar Go To White Castle franchise, with the Warner Bros-based company about to hire a director, and seriously considering doing the film in 3D. The film is Christmas-themed, giving Warner Bros a nice R-rated holiday release for 2011 or 2012. The biggest significance is that the start date signals the return of Kal Penn, who put his career on hold to take the position of associate director of the White House Office Of Public Engagement. The politically conscious actor gave up a lot to take the job–his doctor character, Lawrence Kutner, was killed off from the Fox drama House–but it was done with the understanding that he’d commit to the position for one year. As to the idea of leaving a prestige D.C. post to reprise in a stoner comedy, well, a guy’s got to make a living, right? He’ll leave shortly.

Loved the first, the second was fine, will see a third, but I hope they opt NOT to do 3D. This is getting ridiculous.
Do we really need a third installment of this film?? Wasn’t this produced by Greg Shapiro who won an Oscar for The Hurt Locker?
Greg committed to do HK3 WAY before Hurt Locker was getting any of its buzz/accolades.
Loved the first 2, looking forward to the 3rd installment.
1. Yes we do.
2. Greg Shapiro would have won an Oscar for the first Harold and Kumar had they not cut The World’s Angriest Black Man scene. The Hurt Locker award was clearly the Academy’s attempt to make up for past injustices.
Yuck. The second one was practically a carbon copy of the first only about a 1/10 as funny. Doing the math that means this one will be what, a 1/100th as funny? Sad to see Cho and Penn turning into the Meet the Spartans guys.
You need to check your math. The second movie was 10x funnier than the first. Looking like this one will be 100x funnier
Meet the Spartans guys??? Last time I checked Penn was on a hit series and only left to go work with Obama and Cho is part of the Star Trek franchise. Sooooo…ummm…what??
Some of the “episodes” in HK 2 were rip-offs, but not the whole thing. The red-neck stuff was a copy as was the scene in the ‘hood.
But overall, the plot was much better in the sequel.
The first one was not funny. The second was not funny or directed well. The two writers are the worst of hacks, who people who don’t know what funny is have championed. The biggest joke is how they hide behind the “we want to show minorities as heroes” defense, when it’s just an excuse to put in their racial humor and get a free pass. When will the reign of terror end?
Probably somewhere around the time you get a fucking sense of humor.
Time will prove how horrible they are. What’s it like to bet on the wrong horse while you watch family guy and Juno and tell everyone how talented and funny they are? raise your standards you tool!
Are you kidding? Hurwitz and Schlossberg’s scripts are consistently funny and always deliver the goods. After several meetings with them over the years, they also prove to be two of the most standup guys I’ve encountered in Hollywood. This town needs more of their kind.
Thank you Jon and Hayden for that lovely comment about yourself.
No, they comment above.
Hack is a euphemism for what they are. That said, they’re harmless. Scripts like this and American Pie type movies, even Judd Apatow dick humor, they make people like me look good, who, in turn, couldn’t hold a candle to some Man Booker finalist. You need some of these .230 hitters to make the .330 hitters seem special.
The 2nd film was funnier than the first. I’ll definitely be there for the 3rd.
HECK YESSSS harold and kumar 1 best movie ever. guantonamo bay loved it. 3d??? Hell yeaaa
the 3d fad will be over soon, they better hurry
hmm…i guess being baked in 3D for 7 figures beats breaking the law and using the NEA for Propaganda.
So glad to see this movie is actually happening. Harold and Kumar are hysterical! Can’t wait to see what they get into this time
So, does he not work for the White House anymore? He left House for that gig, and now he’s shooting a movie? I don’t recall reading about him stepping down or being let go.
“with the Warner Bros-based company about to hire a director…”
Um, Heeeeellllloooo?!?
Look at the comments above and listen to them and learn, you WB-shnooks, the second installment WAS “only 1/10 th as funny as the first”… Same writers who assumed the director position (a mistake!), same cast…
What went wrong? Well DUH!
They didn’t hire the all-too-brilliant comedy stylist director known as Danny Leiner (& Associates), that’s what went wrong! This guy is what pulled this outhouse biscuit up and out of the blue soup: He’s smart, savvy, youth-oriented whilst but experienced, budget conscious, all dat. The guy is a fucking comic genius and that is why the first rose above the material itself and is nothing short of being a CLASSIC.
You WB foolyas want to get it right again, then go back to your roots here, otherwise H&K3 will be locked inside the Andy Gump Dump Box once again, fouled over like #2 was and is…
When will they ever learn?
Once more for the nose bleed section: Daniel Leiner. Director.
‘Nuff Said.
Awesome, both movies were wicked. Cunt wait!
Terrific! The H & K movies are fun to watch. I hope NPH returns!
Maybe it’s because I remember seeing films like Airplane! on the television and Ghostbusters in the theater, but I thought Harold and Kumar wasn’t very good even as a stoner comedy. I guess I’m just sober. I don’t understand why the guy who got to play the new Sulu and has other roles would want to go back to this stuff. It should be below him.
kal penn…there’s a career that can’t end soon enough
Harold and Kumar…. In 3D. Jesus fucking Christ. Are they trying to ruin the entertainment industry? A movie like this is when ticket buy s say “What the fuck am I spending an extra $7 for!”
Finally! Been waiting for this follow up for ages. Please Academy, give these boys the Oscars they so deserved.
Where do I start? Kal Penn was part of the conference call from the whitehouse people, NEA director (who resigned) for furthering the propaganda machine thru NEA grants to artists across the country. I guess you can call him a progressive on the way to socialism. His time is up at the whitehouse and he is seeing bus tires now. I surely wouldn’t waste money seeing this guy’s movies.
Pretty sure Penn picked up some stoner tips from his crackhead boss, Obama?
Crackhead? Obama? Are you nuts?
So cool!
one eye.no -s at the end of eye only first time.
KU..
I enjoyed the first, but didn’t care for the second. That said, I’ll netflix it
Thank goodness they left the NPH option open at the end of the second movie… Harold and Kumar are great on their own… but with Neil Patrick Harris involved nothing could keep me away. I hope he makes another “cameo”.
H&K 1: Pure greatness
H&K 2: Pure shit
H&K 3: ??? What the hell are these people thinking? Are they so desperate for cash they have to pull an Austin Powers? Seriously Kal, beating a dead horse is one thing; but grinding it up into pabulum for idiots is another. Honestly I find it a little sad.
Coming soon, Harold and Kumar 10: Marijuana For Our Arthritis. Hilarity ensues when Kumar discovers a wild and previously unknown strain of pot behind the senior center where he and Harold now reside.
He’s leaving his position in the Ministry of Propaganda.
Jesus, people are running away from the Obama administration like rats from a sinking ship. Just proves that Kal is no smarter than your average Joe, getting suckered in by Obama, which is just absurd to any rational thinking human being.
And to the crackhead comment, no he isn’t a crackhead, but he definitely did admit to using and selling cocaine, so I guess crackhead isn’t too far off huh?
