EXCLUSIVE: Leonardo DiCaprio is in early talks to play FBI director J. Edgar Hoover in Hoover, an epic drama that Clint Eastwood will direct and that he and Brian Grazer will produce with Rob Lorenz through Imagine and Malpaso. Talks with Leo are just getting underway, but I’m told that DiCaprio will play the lead role in the film written by Dustin Lance Black, with production to begin later this year. The project began at Universal, where Imagine is based, but is mobilizing at Warners, where Eastwood’s Malpaso has long called home, and where Eastwood is in post production on Hereafter, the film that stars Matt Damon.
Sources tell me that Imagine had been developing “the story of the beginning of the FBI” for a year when it finally showed the script to Universal, where the reaction was negative. “This is exactly what we don’t want to make,” Uni execs reacted. “It’s period, and we have lost enough money with these things.” But then Grazer got the screenplay to pal Clint (they did The Changeling and have had a personal relationship ever since), the two men met about it in mid-February, and suddenly Universal has a tough decision to make since. As a Uni exec admits, “Clint is an amazing director with an extraordinary trach record, and you can’t possibly dismiss anything he gets excited about. The first question now to ask is how much will it cost to make?” Universal’s reticence is understandable, as the studio has endured a rough run with adult-themed dramas. The film will prove a better fit at Warner Bros.

Portraying Hoover in a sympathetic light and remaining even a bit close to reality will be a bit of a challenge. He was a grandstanding political hack from the word go.
Mr. D really is drawn to these lavish period pieces.
This casting news will not be music to the ears of Deadline readers, who have an irrational hatred for him (even though he continues to prove with each role that he’s one of the most talented actors around).
DiCaprio is building up a real body of work. He’s the kind of great actor people are going to still be talking about in forty or fifty years. And now let the hatin’ begin…
For some odd reason, I feel this is the role which will win DiCaprio an Oscar. (Personally, I think he should win it for Shutter Island. But Oscar voters will have forgotten him by next awards season.)
Isn’t it about time for DeCaprio to do a comedy? Even a higher-brow, Mike Nichols/Woody Allen style comedy?
I hope they tell real story of Hoover and how he built the FBI. A truly bizarre character.
I really have to go back a long way in DiCaprio’s career to summon up much enthusiasm for this, so thoroughly has Leo squandered his talent with a string of miscast roles in one lousy Scorsese misfire after another.
Still, if anyone can erase those memories & direct DiCaprio in the performance of a lifetime – it’s Clint.
You know what I actually applaud this casting. I’m not a fan of Leo, but I think he’ll rise to the occasion with Hoover. Afterall its a challenge for any actor portraying him because the guy was filled with so many contradictions. He was a homophobic racist closeted gay man with an ego power trip. I have a hunch with the pedigree involved that this is not going to be your typical Hollywood whitewashing biopic. Clint doesn’t do that. The man’s an artist.
Wasn’t Hoover’s story done years ago with Dan Dailey playing him in a film titled The Private Files of J. Edgar Hoover in 1977? Is a contemporary audience up for this story now and will it make enough money to justify the time and expense involved in a project that certainly doesn’t have four-quadrant appeal? Maybe Eastwood has seen the future, and it makes sense to him and Warner’s. If so –good luck to the venture.
Oh man, you are WAY off. That is clearly a different person.
He still looks like a 15-year-old girl with a voice to match. It’s laughable watching him in any film playing an adult male as it looks like the director’s high-school senior nephew called in a favor and got cast.
Zero gravitas. When he acts tough, you just want to laugh.
Unless there’s a great script that calls for a co ed drag queen coming of age or a Crying Game sequel set in Degrassi High there’s seems to be zero reason why he would be cast in anything other than an after school special.
Thanks. You saved me some typing.
Agreed.
The scenes in “The Aviator” with Cate Blanchette looked like a 1940s version of “To Die For.”
Nothing against Leo, but he’s a bit too young – and pretty – for the part. Ten years ago I’d have said Russell Crowe was a good fit. These days I’m thinking Jon Hamm would be a good fit. And frankly I’m sick of seeing Leo in period movies.
Mr. D takes himself too seriously. Do a freakin’ comedy man… it doesn’t have to be like “Bounty Hunter,” or “Copout.” He’s a smart, connected guy. He should push the envelope a little. Bedsides, Mr. D has forgotten who built his career – teenage girls. They don’t give a damn about watching him play Hoover in the extremely bloated period film we all know it’s going to be.
Also, Eastwood is great with imagery… but let’s not be too generous here, many of his films lack pacing and excitement. His films are as slow moving as he is…
Thank God they don’t want Damon to do it…
Can’t wait to see Leo in a dress!
Mystic River was great… but yea the rest of his films are a snooze fest
Unforgiven? Gran Torino? Million Dollar Baby? Bird? Snoozefests? C’mon, get real.
If anyone can do this, even though casting for Hoover seems way off, Clint can. He can pull a great performance from a tree. I’ll be rooting for you, Clint.
DiCaprio, Eastwood, Hoover? Awards, class, dignity! Probably some major green. Universal’s loss is WB’s gain, this is the right stuff. Leo working under the guidance of the next master director – well, he keeps honing that body of work for the ages.
And Clint, well, damn. Please keep up the amazing, amazing work, Sir. I fully expect to see some ten more masterpieces from you.
That’s an order, pal.
I thought he was doing “Prisoners”
then it was the Mel Gibson Viking movie
now J.Edgar Hoover? Make up your mind, Leo
I think it will be hilarious to see Leonardo Dicaprio in drag.
There’s no other way than to portray Hoover as what he was: a vindictive, RACIST, crossdressing homosexual.
I don’t know why DiCaprio is as drawn to portraying 20th Century racists such as Howard Hughes and now Hoover but he is.
Aside from this, I wonder if he’s only portraying Gay Edgar Hoover as a younger man, maybe so since they claim it’ll be a period piece. Otherwise he’d have to accomplish something not done since Brando with “The Godfather” and DeNiro with his Jake LaMotta portrayal.
Leo should do comedy – I understand he does character driven projects – but it’s time for a change – Comedy would be a challenge if Leo can pull it off…. atleast after the HOOVER project.
Think it’s great that Leo and Clint are working together, I’m sure the turnout will be impressive.
In reference to Enough’s post – Teenage girls “built” Leo’s career? sorry but that’s incorrect. I don’t need to even explain myself for daft comment.
My only issue with Leo is his taste in woman – why is he always going for the models with no brains, or character – all sex appeal? So shallow, he can find a girl with more substance than that, and I hope he does.
Universal is right. Oscar bait. Blah. Even with excellent pedigrees, biopics tend to suck the air out of the theater. Aviator, Amelia – even W., which had a little flash. (I plan to see Milk – been dragging my feet. Could be an exception.)
Dicaprio can be great (Blood Diamond, The Departed, pre-Titanic) – but this sounds like a another showcase for his knitted brow, icy gaze, the turmoil within. Dude needs to stretch already.
They should try black comedy with this material. The pacing of Mel Brooks, mixed with gravitas and moral bite. It would almost seem original in this day and age. Of course they would have to replace the Oscar winners… Keep Dicaprio, throw him in and see if he swims.
@ Bazinga- WORD!
Can someone please get this kid to do something fucking fun. It’s like he went from being a handsome kid to middle aged Tom Hanks without an in between.
When was the last time Leo was on letterman or other late night? Never. He’s not funny, no personality, no charisma. He’s got acting chops, looks, and Scorcese.
But still hasnt been able to give iconic performances like deniro did in his prime.
he’s a relative!
And, he also can’t act!
