EXCLUSIVE: Leonardo DiCaprio is in early talks to play FBI director J. Edgar Hoover in Hoover, an epic drama that Clint Eastwood will direct and that he and Brian Grazer will produce with Rob Lorenz through Imagine and Malpaso. Talks with Leo are just getting underway, but I’m told that DiCaprio will play the lead role in the film written by Dustin Lance Black, with production to begin later this year. The project began at Universal, where Imagine is based, but is mobilizing at Warners, where Eastwood’s Malpaso has long called home, and where Eastwood is in post production on Hereafter, the film that stars Matt Damon.
Sources tell me that Imagine had been developing “the story of the beginning of the FBI” for a year when it finally showed the script to Universal, where the reaction was negative. “This is exactly what we don’t want to make,” Uni execs reacted. “It’s period, and we have lost enough money with these things.” But then Grazer got the screenplay to pal Clint (they did The Changeling and have had a personal relationship ever since), the two men met about it in mid-February, and suddenly Universal has a tough decision to make since. As a Uni exec admits, “Clint is an amazing director with an extraordinary trach record, and you can’t possibly dismiss anything he gets excited about. The first question now to ask is how much will it cost to make?” Universal’s reticence is understandable, as the studio has endured a rough run with adult-themed dramas. The film will prove a better fit at Warner Bros.

It’s funny people criticizing Clint Eastwood for casting Leo, please look at his resume and look at yours then judge.
Hoover was a fascinating character, apart from the urban legends about him being a tranny…this movie has every chance to be a blockbuster if done right
I have never been Leo’s biggest fan, like many I am put off by his looks, but damn it if he hasn’t impressed me in movies like The Aviator and Shutter Island…looking forward to it
Give him the Oscar already. that is what he has been trying to get with all this arty farty movies with so called talented directors. (read – not big B.O biz returns)
he wants so much to do Terminator 4 but only if he gets the Oscar 1st.
Between Decaprio and Damon I have no reason to go see movies. Two 4 foot tall girly men. What has happened to the leading man in Hollywood. Now it is the leading Half Man LOL.
Do you think Leo sees this as an Oscar-bait role?
Oh, puh-lese. Leo as J. Edgar?
Sure, why not. Hoover always looked like he was about 15, right? No resemblance to a bulldog at all…
J. Edgar Hoover was a power-crazed, vile traitor to this country who, among other crimes, persecuted Martin Luther King Jr. and allowed organized crime to spread its influence throughout the country while publicly denying its very existence. Documents declassified reveal that his FBI wanted to actually replace Dr. King with another black leader; one who would be beholden to them–as if the political life of this country was their production to edit and control. (And there is still considerable dirt yet to be de-classified.)
Worse, he acted like the mob, abusing his resources to maintain his own power by routinely blackmailing elected officials. The routine was not a very well-kept Washington secret. Presidents came and went, but Hoover remained, a self-hating closeted gay man who died in his job because no one dared stand up to him–forget trying to replace him.
Extremely media-savvy about self-promotion, Hoover made sure the FBI was continually glorified on the silver screen. Heaven help anyone who might blemish the sterling reputation of his G-Men. He probably spent more time developing and managing the FBI’s film career than solving actual crimes.
So it’s gonna be painfully perverse if Hollywood once again spit-shines his shoes with their tongue.
Leo really wants an excuse to appear on screen in a dress.

i think that leo should do a romantic movie it will be a great change for him.and don’t get me wrong i like his movies alot but i want to see him in a different role.
I don’t get why everyone is saying he should do a comedy. Comedy is certainly not for everybody. Personally, I would not want to see an excellent dramatic actor like DiCaprio attempt humor, nor would I want to see a comic like Seth Rogan try a drama.
