BREAKING NEWS! Robert Halderman, the former Emmy-winning producer of CBS’s 48 Hours, appeared in a Manhattan Supreme Court and pled guilty just now to blackmailing David Letterman. Halderman spoke to reporters outside the courtroom and apologized to Letterman, the late night host’s family, and the former Letterman staffer Stephanie Birkitt, Halderman’s ex-girlfriend whose name had come to light because of her tryst with the late night comedian. According to the deal reached with authorities, Halderman will serve only a 6-month sentence and 1000 hours of community service. He will be on probation for 4 1/2 years. Halderman was originally charged with grand larceny for demanding $2 million from Letterman and threatening to reveal Letterman’s sexual relationships with his show’s female staffers. Letterman instead confessed to them on his Late Show after helping secure Halderman’s arrest through a sting operation. This entire episode was bizarre indeed, especially when Halderman claimed the shake-down money was to spike a screenplay treatment about Letterman’s sex life. A juicy trial had been expected, but today’s plea deal ends the case.
UPDATE: Letterman has issued the following statement:
“I would like to thank the District Attorney of Manhattan, Cyrus R. Vance, Jr., the former District Attorney, Robert M. Morgenthau, the Special Prosecutions Bureau in the D.A.’s Office, and the New York City Police Department. When they became involved with this case, I had complete faith that a just and appropriate result was inevitable. On behalf of my family, I am extremely grateful for their tireless efforts.”

u da man, dude, don’t do it again….
They should give this guy a medal and a show of his own. Dave is a boorish, obnoxious, serial harasser and he deserves whatever bad things come to him. I think the technical term is ‘douche’.
yet Gloria Allred nothing.
Smart for David Letterman to play the victim card in all of this… what a sick man for taking advantage of his powerful position to sleep with many woman that work for him in the first place. His wife should leave his ass.
And this guy gets 6 months for blackmail – don’t think what he did deserves a jail sentence – his career is already ruined – if anything he should have gotten a hefty fine.
Should. Should. Should.
Thank goodness we don’t all live in your fantasy world, where blackmail isn’t a crime and marriages are dissolved because you’re offended by the private life of a complete stranger.
Please be sure to share this wisdom with the judge the next time you’re called for jury duty.
Letterman is the scumbag here. You can’t make eye contact with him? You can’t physically touch him? You can’t enter the hallway when he’s in the hallway? But Letterman can screw your girlfriend and then get you fired? JAIL LETTERMAN, not this poor schlub. David Letterman is a dirt bag and none of us (except those who profit from him) will ever look at him the same way again.
Our society is very lenient on criminals.
Having worked in a quazi-legal field years ago I was privy to many shortcomings in our system of justice especially here in L.A. I suppose most have forgotten the murderer of Dominique Dunn was in prison for a mere 4 1/2 years then as free as a bird as he is today.
Our justice system is entirely broken. Here in California prisoners are being released just because, having served almost none of their sentence.
The shame as I see it is because Halderman targeted one of the highest profile celebrities he was probably given a harsher sentence giving the public the idea our hopeless justice system actually works a little. It does not.
…it is good that we didn’t get details about Letterman’s sex life, that would be very disgusting….yuck!!! That’s the real reason why you deserve jail Halderman, not extortion.
How come Letterman never went to sex rehab? Him and Tiger could have traded entries in their little black books for future reference.
it’s like that dude who caused a shutdown of Newark airport so that he could give his beastly fiancee a kiss only getting fined $500. i’m not saying waterboard the animal-lover or the letterman extorter but come on…
Your anger is misdirected. It’s the incompetent airport security guard who allowed the boyfriend to breach security that should get book thrown at him. He’s the one responsible for the mess, not the lovesick moron who outsmarted him.
If he would have used a lawyer a la Gloria Allred/TigerWoods/hookers the process becomes legalized extortion. He’ll know better next time.
Wounder if CBS will keep his job open ?
When will Justice be served? Letterman clearly deserves an Oscar for playing the grumpy, boring, old, misanthrope while spending all his free time diddling one young female employee after another…in order of seniority.
Worldwide Pants Indeed!
Paging Rupert Pumpkin…
That’s PUP-kin!
Halderman has probably already signed a book and movie deal…
And Letterman avoids a nasty, tell-all trial.
Halderman should have hired Gloria “No Scruples” Allred to represent his “screenplay treatment”. Allred would have secured a hefty price for the rights. And Worldwide Pants would have kept this story zipped… (Well better zipped than Dave.) The difference between extortion and an option is the gossamer veneer of having an agent or lawyer represent you. Fly solo – you’re a blackmailer and you do time. Have an agent or attorney do the same pitch for the same loot and you get rich. Letterman is lucky that Halderman was dumb, vengeful and cheap. A smarter, cuckolded man would have got legal representation and Letterman would have coughed up to keep his “intern eruptions” under his fratboy hat.
ONLY 6 months?? I thought it was for a year, and even THAT seemed light. No wonder he pleaded guilty!
