EXCLUSIVE: Lionsgate has acquired North American rights to Dibbuk Box, a thriller in the vein of The Shining that will be written by Juliet Snowden & Stiles White. Ghost House Pictures partners Sam Raimi and Rob Tapert will produce. The jumping off point is a true story culled from the Leslie Gornstein-bylined Los Angeles Times article A Jinx In A Box. In the film, a family finds itself in possession of a haunted box, and struggles to get rid of its evil curse. Using even a tenuous tie to a true story has been a fright fare staple, and helped films that include The Exorcist, Texas Chainsaw Massacre, Amityville Horror and Psycho.
The writers’ credits include Knowing, remakes of Poltergeist at MGM, and The Birds at Universal, as well as Boogeyman for Ghost House. Dibbuk Box becomes the second project for Ghost House and Lionsgate, which are also developing Burst 3D. In case you didn’t know, Lionsgate Motion Picture president Joe Drake was a Ghost House founder.

GO STILES!!!
I’ve read 2 versions of this project over the years – the Stephen Susco draft (horrible) and the E.L. Katz draft (awesome). Not sure why they aren’t using the Katz draft as I am cautiously pessimistic that Snowden & Stiles can do much better since their drafts of the above mentioned projects are not very good and Knowing was, well, yeah.
So it’s just like THE BOX minus the Kelly? Ugghhh. Supernatural? Forgive me, but the town’s confused with what’s scary. J-Horror got it right, but the remakes played on THEIR fears, not OURS. Different society people.
We love dopey stuff like CHARLIE’S ANGELS & TRANSFORMERERS directed by Happy Meal directors like McG & McBay. You want scary? Truly terrifying? Someone needs to adapt THE BUTCHER BRIDE novel. Now that scared the hell out of me. It will surely keep execs awake at night as well.
Just sell it as “Paranormal Activity in a Box”.
I agree with Scary. I gave up on Dibbuk Box after reading the draft by Stephen Susco. Just TERRIBLE. The Birds draft by Snowden & Stiles is okay, not great. Maybe they’ll make this work.
Oh my God, who fricken cares? Sam Raimi is TERRIBLE!!! All of his movies suck. He is the single reason that, despite the monetary success of the Spider-Man franchise, the movies were terrible. He single handedly killed the story of Spider-Man. Thank God, after 3 terrible movies they decided to reboot the whole frnachise. His “horror” movies are even worse. The Messengers anyone? ugh Pathetic.
