Here’s a nugget to add to the news that David Fincher will direct Pawn Sacrifice, the Sony/Columbia Pictures drama about chess wiz Bobby Fischer. Tobey Maguire is committed to star as Fischer,
insiders confirm. Production begins late fall. Maguire is producing with partner Jenno Topping and Gail Katz. Steven Knight wrote the script, and the plan is to shoot after Sony releases the Fincher-directed Social Network. Fischer was far more tortured than Peter Parker ever was. A prodigy who captured the world's imagination when he won the World Chess Championship over Russian Boris Spassky in a Cold War-era match that drew international media attention, Fischer had a rougher time after that. He faded from view, living abroad and surfacing to make anti-American and anti-Semitic statements. He lived in exile in Iceland until he died.

Comments On Deadline Hollywood are monitored. So don't go off topic, don't impersonate anyone, don't get your facts wrong, and don't bore me.
What ISN’T Fincher directing?
Does anyone know how early in his life the script starts? Will there be a Barbra Streisand/Bobby Fischer flashback at Erasmus High School? Maybe in the hollywood version they date.
I can definitely see Toby playing him. Let’s hope he actually plays chess.
LOL. “Let’s hope he actually plays chess.”
Yeah, or else when they cut to a tight close-up of the chessboard, they’ll need someone else’s stunt hands to move the knight in an L.
“Wow, it looks like Tobey’s actually PLAYING! Amazing.”
hahahaha, well put
I hope Fincher doesn’t go that route, but that’s not a bad idea. If there is a dramaturg on set, they will most definitely suggest it if Tobey is klutzy with his pieces.
I knew a model that had to hold a queen right at the camera. When I saw the add, it was obvious he wasn’t a chess player.
Then again, Hollywood might not give a damn. Remember Scarface – it has its merits, but when Al Pacino’s Tony Montana speaks Spanish – you know that mofo ain’t Cuban.
The script is excellent and does cover Bobby’s early life
Tobey isn’t inherently edgy. And not a good enough actor to pull it off. FAIL.
Tobey pictured at left, apparently Jeremy Renner is pictured at right
I smell Oscar bait
It won’t be tough to train/coach the non-chess playing Maguire to move the pieces in a convincing way…
How about Liev Schrieber as Spassky?
I’d be surprised if Maguire wasn’t very accomplished at Chess. In addition to being a details freak about character prep, he’s also a gamesman – poker, backgammon, video games, etc. He’s very selective about projects and wouldn’t devote himself to the role or to producing the pic if he didn’t have a keen interest in the subject material. I’m confident viewers won’t be disappointed in his performance. Holding a chess piece correctly? Are kidding? Dude can bulk up, shed 25 pounds in a ridiculous time table, learn to horserace, play the piano and dance… Ummm I think he’ll manage to move chess pieces convincingly. Lol! As for the tortured soul… Nobody does it better IMO.
As a young man, Ibsen bought Peer Gynt from a starving poet and set
himself up as a pretender to being a playwright. Then, in Germany, he
was killed in a bar fight, and a group of young German writers wrote
his plays for a while as a joke, eventually hiring an out-of-work
actor to impersonate him. My book will decode all of the jokes the
playwrights wrote into the plays in code, though anyone can tell Peer
Gynt was written by a different author than the one who wrote Hedda
Gabler. Further stylistic analysis, date comparisons and research will
be provided. See the upcoming TV special.
We have established that more than one writer wrote Ibsen’s plays, and
will reveal our data more completely in the book. However, as can be
seen clearly from the style of language Ibsen used, one of the writers
(called “Ibsen 4″ in the study) is clearly speaks danish fluently.
And, we believe there is a case that Ibsen 4 was the dramaturg for the
group, engineering the plots and mechanics of the plays. To reveal one
exciting finding of the study, it is clear that the cabal of
playwrights who actually wrote so-called Ibsen’s works were women.
certainly, any reasonable person will not find it odd that a woman in
that oppressed day and age would both write “Hedda Gabler” and be
unable to publish it because of the repression of her gender.
