UPDATE: Marvel Studios is also testing leads for the female role of Peggy. While Marvel is looking for an American actor to play Captain America, the candidates for the female lead are British. So far, Keira Knightley, Alice Eve, and Emily Blunt are under consideration. Blunt is known to be a favorite of Marvel brass: she was offered the role of Black Widow in Iron Man 2, until Fox exercised an option it held on the actress and put her into Gulliver’s Travels. Scarlett Johansson took the role.
EXCLUSIVE: While Marvel Studios and director Joe Johnston continue to test candidates for The First Avenger: Captain America, I’m told that Marvel has also made an approach to Channing Tatum. Coming off G.I. Joe: Rise of the Cobra and Dear John, I would be surprised if he went in to test for the role now that he’s become a bankable commodity. It’ll come down to Marvel making an offer, and Tatum either accepting it or rejecting it. But he is definitely in the mix, along with other confirmed candidates that include Fantastic Four’s Chris Evans, Cloverfield‘s Mike Vogel and Tron Legacy‘s Garrett Hedlund, and Generation Kill‘s Wilson Bethel. Reports have Ryan Phillippe also vying for the job.
Interesting story I heard recently about Tatum. Asked by director Dito Montiel to star in Son of No One, Tatum agreed. But when Millennium and Nu Image took over the film and tried to squeeze Tatum on a deal that was already a discount, the actor’s UTA reps told Montiel that it looked like Tatum wouldn’t make the movie. This would have been a big problem, since Nu Image sold foreign on the film, right after Tatum scored a solid hit with Dear John. The movie might have imploded without him playing a young cop who questions a murder cover-up. Rather than accepting the equivalent of a Dear John letter, Montiel tracked down Tatum on the faraway set of the Steven Soderbergh-directed Knockout. After a heart-to-heart, Tatum was suddenly back in the picture, which sounds like a very Captain America thing to do. Sources close to Tatum said that the call prompted Millennium to live up to its original deal and that’s why the film will go forward.

Channing Tatum will say no. Chris Evans will say no. The only reason they’re even being considered is b/c discussions like this are convincing Marvel that this Captain America thing might be worth paying a little more for a bigger name EVEN THOUGH it’s obvious Mike Vogel killed the audition (that’s why he’s the only one who survived the first cut). Marvel, do us all a favor and hire Vogel already. At the end of the day the audience will mistake him for Tatum or Evans anyway.
His acting chops can be found in “A Guide to Recognizing Your Saints.”
Robert Downy Jr. Also happened to give a good performance in that film though they were never on the screen at the same time. I think he’d be the best choice of any American actor I’ve heard of in consideration.
Good Lord, this just gets sillier by the day.
They repeatedly said they wanted a relatively unknown actor for the part – which made sense. Now they’re considering Chris Evans, Channing Tatum and Ryan Philippe? I like all these guys, but come on! Either all this casting news is just to get some free publicity or they really have no freaking clue what they are doing.
Robert Buckley was a good choice. Eric Winter would be even better.
Please. Half of the comments here are from wannabe Hollywood phonies
who are just jealous of Tatum’s success. Right now, the director shot himself in the foot with the “casting american” thing, an now the clock is ticking. The problem with casting so young is that eventually Cap will be the leader of the Avengers, so it has to be believable that people will take their cues from him.
I would believe he could take on a leadership role moreso than the other “Kids from the candy store” that are in the running. I mean Chace Crawford, r u kidding me??, Bucky for him at best, no way would I believe Downey Jr. even acknowledging him.
Out of the old list, Krasinski was best, because he has the acting chops AND being an actor, could make it more believable(remember, Downey was primarily a comedian til he took chances, hell he is a SNL alumni!
At this point, I say cast him, coach him an let’s go, this is quikly becoming a joke.
Why no mention of Ryan Phillipe being in the running? He confirmed it himself in an interview with MTV. I believe he would be a better choice than Tatum but believe there are still better options than both. Still, if Phillippe was cast, I wouldn’t be too upset.
BTW, getting someone who can act is paramount to this role. To whoever said that women will see it because Tatum looks good and guys will go due to him not being a pussy, you have no concept of what makes a good comic book movie… please stop commenting on them. You need a good script and actors to hit it out of the park, treating fans like they’re stupid doesn’t work, as evidenced by Batman & Robin, Daredevil, Fantastic Four: Rise Of The Silver Surfer, Ang Lee’s Hulk, Punisher, etc… if you show the fans respect in your writing and the actors you cast for the film, they will show you the green from their wallets… it’s as simple as that.
Finally, the studio is making sense. From day one I thought Channing Tatum should be Captain America and I think this is the SECOND time he has been added to the mix since we all heard Captain America was going to be made into a movie.
Just agree to give him this role, he truly wants this role and whether you like his acting abilities or not no one plays a soldier like Channing Tatum. He was born to play military roles and Captain America is his final mission.
IMPORTANT: Captain America is NOT shakespeare role plus who would have thought the Robert Downey Jr would have been excellent in Iron Man?
Regarding why he is bankable commodity here are the reasons:
1. Coach Carter = HIT
2. Step Up = HIT because of him which started up a franchise
3. She’s the Man = HIT
4. Fighting = HIT especially via DVD/Blu-ray sales (hey, whatever methods works)
5. GI Joe = HIT and top 3 best selling DVD/Blu-ray sales in 2009
6. Public Enemies = HIT even if he was only on screen for few mintues still made an impression, who doesn’t remember Pretty Boy Floyd
7. Dear John took down Avatar = HIT which means everyone is always going to remember him.
8. Eagle of the Ninth pray = HIT movie especially since I love roman epic movies but especially for his performance. I have confidence look at the director Kevin McDonald
9. Knockout again I’m sure the movie will be a Knockout = HIT.
Regarding his acting chops please see Dear John, Stop Loss and especially A Guide to Recognizing Your Saints.
The only sad thing about Stop Loss and A Guide to Recognizing Your Saints was that he gave outstanding performances but they were not huge HIT’s = shame but obviously the powers that be have seen his performances hence his getting this amazing roles.
I have to say CT is not stupid but extremely smart too i.e. the choices he makes regarding selection of movies is fantastic who would have thought Eagle of the Ninth and Knockout after starting off with small roles like Step Up etc.
You have to give him credit his come far considering he has less than 8 years acting experience.
Bring on Captain America he is the ONLY man for the job = HIT franchise, I hope the studio I smart enough to pick him in the end.
I knew Downey would be perfect for Iron Man as soon as they cast him. Probably every nerd in America did, too.
I got paid to watch Step Up and thought it was dreck. Based only on that film, I won’t ever watch another Tatum is in. There are a lot more teenage girls than there are of me, so would I be shocked if he got it? Nope. Would I be happy? Nope. Would I see the movie? Nope. Would Marvel/Disney laugh all the way to the bank? Maybe.
Ryan Phillippe. All american kid. The scene’s in “Breach” between him and Chris Cooper are amazing. Crash, Gosforsd Park & Flags of our fathers. Haggis, Altman and Eastwood. Like Downey Jr. in Iron Man, it helps when our hero’s can act.
HEY MARVEL. CHRIS EVANS IS THE BEST CAPTAIN AMERICA YOU ARE GOING TO FIND SO SIGN HIM UP ALREADY.
How exactly does that sound like something Captain America would do? That’s just a silly comment.
This whole movie is turning into a disaster — and it hasn’t even started filming yet.
If they can’t find the right Steve Rogers in time, they should push the release date back to Summer 2012. Give Captain America the Avengers’ May 7, 2012 release date and push the Avengers back to Thanksgiving 2012. Johnston said that Captain America leads directly into the Avengers. Marvel could easily set-up and promote Captain America and the Avengers the way Warner Brothers’ is promoting Deathly Hallows Part I and II.
i’m on team ryan phillippe too. he’s a strong actor. and he still looks really young. and he’s had moments of greatness throughout his career. it would be like chris nolan when he cast christian bale as the dark knight. phillippe won’t bring any baggage to the role.
Tatum is only capable of one type of role, which he plays in Saints. He does the role very well because he’s been playing it since he was a teen. He is a man so influenced by pop culture that he has no identity and therefore imitates the mannerisms and vocals of a street-born kid. It is contrived and exhausting to watch. You could literally make a drinking game out of how many times he locks his jaw to look cool in Fighting.
He is not Captain America.
My choice is Garrett Hedlund. He can act. He’s a real chameleon, and he doesn’t look or talk like he’s putting out a rap album.
Peter Fonda will always be my Captain America.
krasinski is a good actor but nobody outside of north america knows who he is.
garrett hedlund is untested. but if tron goes well, he already has a franchise.
tatum reminds me of josh harnatt –except tatum’s movies open.
chris evans really bothered me in the fantastic four. he’s a tom cruise clone (without the hit movies) like monica potter was (is) a julia roberts clone (without the hit movies).
REALLY hope Evans does this. Of all of the choices, he seems like the best fit.
Man… I think Marvel is just throwing out names now just to keep the fan boys going crazy, watch they pull a rabbit out the hat and pick someone who we haven’t heard was in the running
Wilson Bethel?? Really?? How has a guy like Trevor Donovan not been thrown into the mix for the role. He is a local California kid who is 6’2” and chiseled. He’s done just enough stuff to be able to handle this role while at the same time being unknown to 95% of Americans.
I like Tatum but anyone who has seen G.I. Joe knows that he may not be suited for this type of movie. I think the best way to give this movie real legs is to go with an unknown and surround him with some real talent ala Hugo and Keira.
Also think Jon Foster would be a good out of the box choice for Marvel.
F@ck Garrett Hedlund. He is too young, don’t care how good he can act, an he’s not that great.Hell, I’d even put Tatum up against him.
But no, way too young.
Phillipe is awesome, but too short. Might as well get Danny DeVito.
What about Ben McKenzie? He’s got the intensity and the look, and can switch from nice normal guy to punching guy quickly and believably. I could definitely see him going up against RDJr.
NO WAY!!! This kid is tiny! 5’6″… 5’8″ tops!
I’d rather they played the character a little older and went with an unknown like Mark Pellegrino. He could hold his own against RDJr.
Matt Salinger couldn’t act either.
Ben McKenzie is only 5’9″. too short to be CA
This is probably going to be a typically awful superhero movie, regardless of who plays the role, which is precisely why you probably won’t see any real actors vying for the role. It never ceases to amaze me to this day when I think of Hallie Berry playing Storm in X-Men. In another era, that would have been career suicide.
Thank God for the two latest Batman movies, which set the bar for how good a superhero movie could be. Unfortunately, Watchmen didn’t live up to expectations, which will give Hollywood the motivation to stick with the tried and true claptrap we can expect Captain America to be.
By the way, he was not the “first Avenger”, he was like, oh, the god damned SIXTH!
Garrett Hedlund too young? How old were you when you enlisted Yurjudge? Watch the new Tron trailer and tell me Hedlund isn’t CA. Let Tatum stick to the Eminem-type roles, that’s his thing. Brooding wanna-be identity crisis Vanilla Ice stuff.
At the risk of sounding like a heretic, I have a question.
Does the role of Captain America have to be cast with a caucasian? If so, why?
he should be white because he’s white in the comics and to decide to change his race would be ridiculous wouldnt it
Marvel, are you just throwing out names to mislead us or do you really have bad taste?
