In total viewers, “Late Night” (2.1 million viewers overall) topped “Late Late Show” (1.8 million) by a margin of 16 percent.
That’s not exactly unexpected news. Leno is expected to top Letterman all week, fueled by Olympic medal-winners and tonight’s Sarah Palin vs Mitt Romney late night booking war. The real competition won’t begin until next week.
For the first night of the “Jaysurrection”, Leno’s Tonight Show did a 5.4 rating/14 share in metered-market households versus CBS Late Show with David Letterman‘s 3.0/8 and ABC Nightline‘s 3.4/8 and Jimmy Kimmel Live‘s 1.8/6 in Nielsen’s 56 metered markets. The Tonight margin over Late Show in metered-market households was 80%.
In the 25 markets with Local People Meters, The Tonight Show with Jay Leno (2.0/9) ranked #1 among the major networks in the time period over Late Show (1.0/4), Nightline (1.5/6) and Jimmy Kimmel Live (0.9/5). The Tonight margin over Late Show in adults 18-49 in the Local People Meter markets was 100%.
At 12:35 a.m., Late Night with Jimmy Fallon (2.1/7 in metered-market households) out-delivered CBS’s Late Late Show with Craig Ferguson (1.5/5) by a margin of 40%. In the 25 markets with Local People Meters, Late Night (0.8/5 in 18-49) topped Late Late Show (0.5/3) by a margin of 60%.

Of course he did. I don’t expect he can *hold it*, though.
Everyone loves to see a train wreck.
Why is it that some folks just can’t wait to diss Jay. He’s funny and he’s back where he should be. AND, he didn’t screw up the schedule…NBC DID! Lay off Jay and get back to reporting some real crappy entertainment industry news!
Yes but you have to agknowledge that it could have very well been avoided if Jay retired when he was sopposed to, OR he couldve just said NO, i like where i am… but instead he sold himself out and we have to listen to his 50 year old humour for another year or so before he retires and they have noone to fill his spot exept Jimmy Fallon…. With all due respect Jimmy Fallon is funny, but not 11:35 Funny..just like Jay is funny, but not 2010 funny, or 2009, or 08,.. 07…and hes definatly not 11 35 funny anymore…. he had his prime.. its gone
I think it was expected that there would be a lot of rubber-neckers for Leno’s first show. But let’s see how many stick around.
Was that last night? Seriously?
Not a surprise at all that Leno’s ratings were good. Everybody was hoping that Leno would bomb, but his ratings will soon settle back where they were before Conan took over. It’s more same ol’ same ol’, and NBC remains that little engine that’s confused as all heck.
Unfortunately, Zucker is probably throwing high fives around the office today, somehow taking credit for making a brilliant decision. Of course, Leno comes back only one night after the boneheaded move of leaving the Olympic Closing Ceremonies for “The Marriage Ref”. But I guess all that matters is the latest numbers, and Zucker and Co. will try to ride its Olympic ratings and Leno’s return for the next month.
Not at all surprised. He has some huge guests, and it’s a premiere week (sorta) for the show. His demo is different than Conan’s, so I expect them to come back to his show. Not thrilled about that, but so be it.
Nikki, how does Leno’s number compare with Conan’s Tonight Show premiere? Can you post that please? Thanks!
Nice going, America!
(hangs head in shame)
BWAHAHAHA!!! Letterman the adulterous, ugly pig gets shit on again. Hope he keeps geting bitch-slapped until he retires. Hee!
5.4 million viewers is not impressive for a big comeback show and Olympic promotions. Leno averaged that per night a couple years ago. He did huge numbers his first night on the prime time show too, then, well, we know what happened.
Nikki, what I’d like to know is what the ratings turn out to be for all those whiny affiliates who blamed the 10pm fiasco for their lower 11pm local news numbers. Will they continue to complain and not look at their own failings? Can Jay now blame them for a bad lead-in when his numbers go down next week?
Conan,
This is why you were fired. FIRED!!!
You just plain aren’t funny and we DON’T CARE FOR YOUR COMEDY.
Jay, we love you.
Welcome back, welcome back, welcome back.
Conan’s funnier!!!
Conan was not fired – he chose to leave in order to preserve the Tonight Show in its traditional time slot. And sorry I think Jay should have been the bigger man and quit but he didn’t and for that he lost my respect.
Yeah, and The Jay Leno Show opened with 17 million viewers.
OF COURSE Leno killed last night. Even I watched that unfunny hack for 30 minutes just to see how he would handle his return to The Tonight Show following all of the hullabaloo. I was curious to see if he’d acknowledge it in the monologue, or if he’d wait until he sat back at his desk before reaching out to Conan. Something. Anything? Nothing. Classless piece of trash.
Oh, and there are more laughs to be found in Conan’s twitter feed than NBC post-11:35 now.
hey look, Conan’s a great guy and I wish him the best but it’s obvious that the masses in America prefer Jay Leno.
So let’s not get all Prop 8 on this, ok? Meaning the fight is over so regroup and come back stronger for the next fight rather than whining like a bitch for the next year about it.
What’s with all this Leno coverage? Conan’s on Twitter. Doesn’t get more concise than 140 characters per day. Let’s see Leno try that!
Simply fascinating to see all the chatter about the “Jaysurrection” .. oh wait, sorry, I was thinking about a different topic!
Jay Leno won’t have those ratings come next week. fuckin’ douchebag…. I HATE LENO!!!!
Of course the ratings will eventually level off, but Leno ultimately will beat Letterman just like he did for 15 years straight. The recent Tonight Show shake-up should be confirmation that Jay’s a survivor. NBC has made many mistakes recently but insisting that Leno stay with the network turned out to be a genius move.
Jimmy Fallon had Robert Pattinson on last night. Just saying;)
You make a salient point. Jay is being helped by a post-Olympics bump and the “trainwreck” factor. It will be interesting to see where his ratings are 3 weeks from now…
Suck it Conan losers
Leno has been beating Letterman for the past 17 years, this isnt news to anyone. Business as usual.
Jimmy Fallon did so well because he had Robert Pattinson on his show.
Boooooooo!
Am I the only one that remembers that Jay Leno had that job before Conan? How did Jay lose the job? NBC kicked him off to make way for Conan, per Conan’s contract demands.
Howard Stern, Jimmy Kimmel and many, many others who were not effected in any way concerning their own jobs just want to “pile on” and appear to be relevant.
In this time of massive job losses, people hurt for the guy who’s lost his job—even though most of us would be consoled with a $35 million+ buyout.
Folks, Jay lost his job first.
