NBC has picked up daytime drama “Days of our Lives” for its 45th season, keeping the long-running show on the network through the 2010-11 television season. Despite the cancellation of other soaps, especially on CBS, the network said Days has shown year-to-year increases in key female demographics. It first premiered as a half-hour drama in 1965 and expanded to an hour 10 years later. It’s currently tied for #2 for the season among all daytime dramas in women 18-49 and women 18-34. Through 25 weeks of the 2009-10 season, Days is averaging 3.3 million viewers, its highest average at this point in the season in three years and a 10% increase over its audience of one year ago, according to Nielsen Media Research. Days of our Lives is produced by Corday Productions in association with Sony Pictures Television.

Soap Operas are dead meat. They are yesterday’s drama. When William Bell committed suicide, it was the end of the daytime serial.
I am surprised that Days has been renewed for another year, through September 2011. They are operating this soap on a sort of skeleton crew, after getting rid of many main characters who have been on the show for year. The story lines are so preposterous, it’s amazing that anyone watches it. Instead of getting rid of the actors on this soap, they realy should have cleaned house in the writer’s department. The writers of Days are terrible!
Days of Our Lives is an awesome show! The writing keeps improving every year. I have watched this beloved show for 40 years, my mom watches and my grandmother watched while she was alive. The focus is finally returning to the characters. Keep it up DOOL!
i love days
I LOVE IT TOO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! keep it going NBC!
totally agree dena higley head writer is slowly asphixiating this show she even put her daughter in the show as the supervisor of ciara on the campout gross!
I hate that as the world turns has gone off the air.
I also hate that All My Children is going off the air..
But I understand why they have cancelled All My Chlidren is because of the writers..
I rember that Erica Kane was always such a Bitch on the show now they made her into a goody two shoes.
They also got rid of Adam Chandler who was also the rock of the soap All My Children..
I hate to see that all these soaps have been cancelled..
WELL I SURE WOULD HATE BORING YOU THE SHOW IS DOING THAT TO THE VIEWERS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I have written the writers about the way the show is evolving for getting rid of the regular actors. it is a mess seems as though the writers are trying out actors letting them dip their toes in to acting and firing them. sure stinks. I had asked why EJ has not been put in prison for shooting John Black and where is that TEK who saw the shooting. EJ is such a whinng puke
It was so stupid how the part was written about taking John’s memory that was really stupid. As far as i care you can shove the show the way it is now. bring back the old actors.
I hope every day they cancel this absurb example of “the show that was”! I look forward to rerun world, which will include the great writers of the eighties. As a long term fan, I beg NBC to cancel this show
My comment is that “DAYS OF OUR LIVES” was not the sluttiest soap ever. My Mom watched it God BLESS her SOUL!! I watched it with her.
I know all the characters ALOT better than the REALITY TRASH on OTHER stations …..I told my boyfriend Ronny that Reality would take over TV – I watch my soaps, RERUNS of MR ED,reruns of Rosanne,Reruns of Everyone Loves Raymond, Seinfeld, The New Adventures of New Christine….and on and on…SNOOKI AND all the GARBAGE TV CAN SUCK IT!!
I totally agree with you. I think reality shows are nothing but trash, they are absurd and stupid!
Don’t watch it then.
It’s me again. Just wanted to apologize for the typos. My keyboard is sticking.
place don’t canel the show. I love this show. Everybody on Days of Our Lives I love them as my own
Days of Our Lives is the BEST! My female friends and family have our fingers and toes crossed that it doesn’t get cancelled! Fun story lines!
I have been watching DOOL on & off since 1969…I was only 4 years old.
I used to watch it with my mother before I went to kindergarten. DOOL used to be sooooo good back in the old days before all of these over the top storylines of the past 15-20 years. It’s amazing that the writers have NOT figured out these current storylines are ridiculous. Getting rid of the old-time actors has alienated long time fans who have stuck with the show for many years. I miss the old storylines when the characters had problems that everyday people could relate to. At this point I don’t see a problem with cancelling the show, there is no evidence that it will ever get better.
Okay for those who bag DAYS don’t watch..Soaps were never meant to be reality..they were introduced for stay at home mums (who had no choice) to escape from screaming children and reality…Please keep it on, we have enough reality shows on and believe it or not they to at times are scripted so I would prefer to watch a soapy than a so called reality show.
Yay for Nicole! I agree… not everyone has to like Days. For those who don’t… just change the channel. Haven’t we all learned that you can’t please everyone?
Days was (and still is) a break for stay at home moms AND it is a wonderful break for career moms too. I’ve been watching for 29 years and there have be worse Days. These days, I watch while doing lots of other things, but thank the writers and the network for keeping a little fantasy on the airwaves.
I’m glad to see other supportive comments as well (too often these sites only post one side).
Wow, I have been watching days of our lived with my mother since Shawn Douglas and Belle went to Puerto rico to retrieve Alice Hortons treasured family ruby. Ever since then I have been addicted. My mother has been watching it almost 41 years and she is just as addicted as the first day she saw it. Some of you people don’t realize it is other peoples comfort blanket, escape to a different and more interesting world. And Pamela, just because the plots aren’t to your liking does NOT mean the writers are doing a horrible job. It just means you have a different taste than what the majority of the population has. What is happening now is what most of the watchers wants. I really hope they continue this soap because i love it.
please keep days of our lives on nbc.my family cant live without it.
I was hoping NBC will cancel Days Of Our Lives.
It have ONE full year to wrap up all the stories.
Then, it will be goodbye to another soap
You obiously do not watch. I have since the 70s when my mother was alive & watched. Please dont cancal Days NBC. Enough sops have been lately & replaced with stupid talk shows. (CBS) for example.
If Youu don’t like Days Of Our Lives Then CHANGE YOUR CHANNEL…
No One Is Forceing you to WATCH!!
I have been watching this show sense I was 10 over 32 years now. My 11 year old watches now and really gets into it. I work full time and don’t miss a show. Thank goodness for dvr’s. This is the one thing I look forward to seeing every day. Thanks NBC.
Stefano DiMera is the true boss of NBC, you know…
That should not be surprising. There is still an audience for soaps, regardless of its decline, and this may be an indication that the viewers are consolidating toward the remaining shows.
now if NBC could renew “Chuck” already, that’ll be good news!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Clearly those responding to Days of Our Lives being picked up another year do not watch the show. I have been a fan since diapers over 25 years ago and have steadily watched since. Now I have recruited my husband, his brother, and his brother’s girlfriend. Days of Our Lives is the best soap and one of the better programs on tv.
This is great news. I was ready to boycott NBC if the rumors came to fruition and Days was cancelled.
This may be enough to let me forgive the Leno-Conan fiasco and stop boycotting all late programming on NBC. And personally, I thought they should have kept Leno in his time slot before they moved Conan. Totally a mistake to move the line-up around when they knew Leno wasn’t ready to let it go. Conan is a reasonable man. It could have been worked out much better.
But Seriously, I can only stand so much daytime tv. Days of Our Lives defines entertainment and I love the direction and current cast, though we could stand more men.
Well I watched Days for 30 years and I stopped watching a few years ago because the writers have all but destroyed the show. They got rid of almost all of the vets and replaced them with kids that I don’t care about. A few years ago I couldn’t imagine ever wanting this show to be cancelled but I would almost rather see that happen than to see a show that I cherished for much of my life be destroyed. I’m only glad it was picked up for another year so that the actors still have jobs.
I fully agree with this respondent. Days is the best soap opera on TV! The story line is so exciting right now and I love the new characters as well as the old ones! The tribute to Alice Horton is very touching and it is great to see all the alumni cast together once again! I have been watching Days for 25 years and it such a part of my day! I would sorely miss Days if it were canceled!!
Thank you NBC for renewing Days of Our Lives for 2010-2011!! Lets keep it going beyond that!!

I completely agree with you I, myself have been watching Days of ours Lives since 1993 and, I k now this may sound corny but, I feel ike since I’ve been watching so long that thge characters actually “feel like family” especially Frances Reid (she played Alice Horton). Ever sice I stared watching “Days” I have wondered what it would be like to visit the days of our Lives set & actually be on Days but sadly, it’s a closed set:( Oh, before I forget, I disagree with all the other posts I’ve read so far. Anyway, even from the VERY FIRST episode I saw I’ve felt that way I cry when people on the show cry.
I visited the set 2 times and it was awesome. I had a tour once w/ Steven Nichols and once w/ John Aniston. There are both wonderful. I met a lot of the cast and they gave me an autographed script. Long live DAYS!
Days of Our lives is the best soap on TV. It is something I have watched since I was 11 yrs. old, and it is the ony show that I can sit and talk to my grandma with. I think that it has been getting so good lately and I hope it is on for many years to come. For all of the haters, just change the channel if you don’t like it.
Where is Wendy Riche when you need her?
PLEASE bring Wendy Riche back to day time, Primetime,….ANYTIME!?!?!?
As long as they can keep this audience, they’ll stay on for quite awhile longer
bring back that hottty that played Troy.
Good to know that Stefano will be on a little longer. Maybe Days will be on long enough to to see him use lazer’s and combustion chambers on the Bradys. Maybe Sean will become police chief. Yeah…definitely too soon to get rid of this one!!! Thanks!
I’m glad that DAYS has been renewed for another season, but I think the writers need to make some serious changes if they hope to stay around longer than that. Here are my suggestions:
Get rid of- Rafe,Ari, Gabi, Chad, Mia, Dr. Baker, Carly, Daniel, Adrienne, Justin,Calliope and Anna
Bring back- Shawn and Belle (the originals), Mimi, John, Marlena, Jennifer, Jack,Chelsea, Austin and Carrie
The characters that brought the show its greatest success have been let go, and the writers need to stop bringing back people who nobody cares about. Bring back the textbook supercouples!
I agree that they need to bring back the couples that everyone wanted to watch. I was a huge fan of original Shelle, of course them coming back will never happen as the actors are both on General Hospital. But, if they ever managed to get these couples back, I would start watching the show again. This show was a huge part of my life growing up and it’s sad to see what it’s turned into.
i like days and been watching i was a kid long ago. if you dont watch days change the station i dont want to watch dr oz every day u must deal with life very day so l hour aday is great for me . but they need to bring more people back like cool linda anderson and jack and melisa and more what ever happened to bloned and doc. i need to watch fun story lines a little to, we need to see more olddies like me
You can leave some of the old ones in the show. I think you need to at least let one couple stay together. I think Ari & Brady should stay together. Nicole lost her chance with Brady. All I can say Brady is go forward and never go back. I’m also tired of the people tryin to get away with things and u know I’m talking about.
Days is the only soap IMHO.
The writers do a terrific job with each character. They are doing “customize writing” where each character is written for differently instead of the old way of soapy writing written the same way for everyone.
They use HUMOR! They have never written for Victor so well. I’m really enjoying the humor from others as well.
Was crazy to see so many families in the same house. I see it as cost saving, not as many sets and they are much nicer now!
The mystery is the best and Days has always had it.
They keep the same actors playing their roles in most casts. I love when a flash-back is done from yrs ago, it’s the same characters playing that role.
These are tough expensive times and I think if one is a fan of Days, we should be happy they’re still on and the show is so well, written, acted, suspenseful and so enjoyable.
To an even longer life!
Elaine
Days is so soiled now that every plot reeks of contaminates…Stephanie and Mia were transformed to the unlikable; each and every romance leaves the viewer with absolutely no warmth; the kidnapping plot is tiresome; Nicole is so boring as the Sammi-EJ thing; the only interesting feature right now is the South American prison adventure. Can’t we have just one relationship to feel good about? The Bo/Hope situation has spiralled down to luidicrousness. In todays’ depressing worldly events, at least offer a slightly hopeful plot, somewhere, but Days is destroyin itself rapidly.
Thank you NBC for keeping Days. It’s been a staple in our house for a long time. Excapism at its best! Much better than the fare that airs after it. Anymore Doctor shows and I’ll be sick.
I just wish NBC would wake up and stop interrupting the story line with the dad-blamed Tennis and Golf matches. Nothing so frustrating as sitting down to see an episode of my favorite soap, and finding it’s either not on at all because of the “sports”, or is on at 3:30 A.M. in my area. Sometimes I wish I could shoot the idiots who schedule this stuff! No one home during the day wants to watch that crap! Days episodes are MUCH more enjoyable.
“Bore you”? My mom use to laugh and say that “we could watch “Days”
two days per week and not miss anything”. Now days, fans say that “we could watch two days per month and usually the story would still be where it was the previous month”.
(These facts are not wrong.)
I have been watching DOOL since I was a little girl and I am still a die-hard fan today! I just wanna say I want ERIC BRADY back in Salem!!! PLEASE!!! Refresh some old charactors!!!
I have been watching since I was in high school, and I am about to call it quits. J. Jacobs above had it right—you could watch 2 days a month and not really miss anything. I record Days and on the weekend, I watch all 5 days in well under 2 hours. I fast forward through anything that is a rehash, flashbacks, commercials, and any of the storylines that are dragging or are just plain stupid. I can’t watch this slow-moving show in real time – it makes me crazy. I mean, really, how many times can the same character say the same thing about the same situation??? The Chloe-Daniel thing couldn’t get any more ridiculous or drawn-out if they tried.
Kudos to the memorial for Alice Horton. I remember my mother watching days from 1965. I also have watched days over the years except during the radical scientific episodes and demonic possessions. Even I had to get away from that. I feel Days has improved over the last few weeks but it has a way to go if it is to stay alive. Soaps in general seem to be in jeopardy probably due to women having to enter the workplace. It seems the shows that rate the best are on Soap Network. Probably because women can watch them after they get home from work. I hope DOOL stays alive but improving actors would be a plus and keep away from bogus storylines about scientific experiments. Save that for the SyFy Network.
I have watched Days for over 40 years and can’t believe what I am seeing. Someone gets arrested and people have access to them???? without police present. Come on. And now Hope gets arrested and doesn’t want representation when she could get off because of the meds. Come on, let’s get back to reality. Or is this the way of ending the show even tho it has been extended to 2011? Why can’t any of your families remain together? At some point you always seem to turn a good family around. Days is going to the dogs and fast. And the Demera’s how do they get by with evrything? Sick.
PLEASE DONT CANCEL DAYS OF OUR LIVES!!!! I’m one of the biggest fans of the show. I get waaaay too involved in it… for example, when Tony died last year, I was inconcolable for a week. I sat in my room and cried and cried. I may have an addiction… Please support my habit!
DOOL is one of the best soaps out there. Only One Life to Live can compare. I like the storylines that they are bringing.
