Neil Patrick Harris has a TV-heavy resume. Now he’s just landed the lead in Smurfs: The Movie for Sony. Harris won’t have to walk around as a blue-tinted Avatar, either. The Raja Gosnell-directed film is a mix of live action and animation, and Harris is the lead live action character. Filming begins in April, when he’ll be on hiatus from CBS’ How I Met Your Mother.

Death Race 2, Big Momma’s House 3, the Gilligan’s Island film, and now… Smurfs: the Movie.
Please tell me this is in 3-D and my joy will be complete.
According to IMDB.com the only cast member they have listed (so far) is Jonathon Winters as the voice of Papa Smurf. I think Neil would be best suited for the role of Vanity Smurf…
Oh, and this movie is supposed to be the first film of a Smurfs TRILOGY!?! Oh, My!!!
You forgot Crank 2…worst sequel ever!
I was born in 1960 so The Smurfs aren’t exactly in my wheelhouse, but this sounds like the worst idea for a movie since Viewmaster (which, as someone born in 1960 is indeed in my wheelhouse but I still don’t comprehend how you make a movie based on a plastic toy).
Smurfs: The Movie aka Avatar 2 (Only dumbed down, if that’s possible).
Is he playing Gargamel?
I guess this is as far being an out gay man will take you in Hollywood.
aside from hosting the Emmys…and opening the Oscars…and the star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame? Yeah I guess he seems to be suffering career-wise.
Who did they pick as Smurfet ?
katy perry
the lead live action character? That would make him what, Gargamel?
Johan and Pee Wee remember they were friends with the smurfs.
Of every story script or treatment that is collecting dust on the shelves in Amy’s Office this is what she reaches out for? It is so hard to understand? You have Will Smith in his MIB3 glasses standing by…in Hollywood death and movies run in threes.
Lethal Weapon 3 was great-shoulda stopped there. THE SMIRFS-
please no.
Will they be sticking to the original cartoon story line? If so, will he be playing Johan or maybe even PeeWee?
“Lead Smurf”… isn’t Papa Smurf the lead Smurf?
Suppose Smurfs are all equal.
Wonder why someone’s making a Smurfs film.
Feel like it’s a bad decision.
Feel like it was a decision made while inebriated.
Feel like it will ruin childhood memories.
Wonder what kind of toys the film will sell.
Wonder if they’ll bring back the tiny immobile figurines.
Wonder if they’re banking on Avatar.
Wonder if it will be 3d.
Feel like this is a bad joke.
Feel like this is depressing.
Feel ill.
Papa Smurf or Gilgamesh?
Why would you title your article, “Neal Patrick Harris Will Be Lead Smurf” if NPH will be a live action character and not a smurf?
Sweet, NPH rules, ever since he blasted back on Harold and Kumar, he should do great in a movie like this.
Which character will Neal Patrick Harris play?
I too was born in the 60s so Smurfs aren’t really part of my treasured childhood memories but it totes sounds like another project designed to deconstruct a childhood memory (i.e. the Brady Bunch movies through Land of the Lost) because making fun of something is easier than creating something from scratch.
Yes, this WILL be in 3D
i’m kind of intrigued by this hahaha. never really liked the smurfs but i’ll probably end up seeing this.
Is it finally time to BOYCOTT theaters? There’s got to be a way to send a message to the studio geniuses (read with sarcasm) to start focusing on movies we actually want to see as opposed to what they want to make. Battleship: The Movie, anyone?!?
I could totally see him as Gargamel after seeing him as Dr. Horrible. This sounds super fun!
Only John Lithgow can play Gargamel
Neil Patrick Harris should be great in any Smurf’s movie. My son was a huge Smurf fan and as a kid, his room was stuffed with Smurf everything. It should be a wonderful children’s movie. Go NPH!
Well i really love NEIL(correct spelling!) patrick harris so
i think he will make it a great movie i mean he made
harold and kumar better than it should have been
he is just so talented that whatever he gets he makes
it a hit so YEA NPH!!!!!
heh. If Neil Patrick Harris is in it, it will be at least mildly funny.
the odds are ten to one that he plays an evil smurf, a cowardly smurf, a smurf that gets a wedgie or an enemy of the smurf-kind.
He’ll get an audience out of his loyal fans though, at least. Nobody passes up the chance to laugh at their favorite film star in a kilt, a funny hat and blue skin.
As a Smurf fan, I am wary of the project but glad it is happening. The original material for Smurfs is some pretty awesome comic books, so if the movie goes based on that, I will be happy. If the movie looks like most of the TV remake poop Hollywood has aimed at kids, I will avoid it like the plague. The fact it’s a trilogy gives me hope there will be a good epic storyline, rather than a hip-hop smurf or a Situation Smurf spouting catchphrases and whatnot.
The smurfs cartoon was eons better than most cartoons from my childhood.
I love Neil Patrick Harris! I will definitely be seeing this, will be funny for sure.
