“It was an old and ugly crowd,” one of my snitches said upon leaving the party. Yes, the spy was speaking figuratively. But, no, not talking about Bryan Lourd’s CAA bash or Ari Emanuel’s WME fete or their usual Triple-A crowd on Friday night. Rather, this was about Barry Diller’s Saturday afternoon lawn luncheon. Ostensibly, it’s in honor of Vanity Fair editor Graydon Carter. In years past, Diller’s Beverly Hills estate was the ultimate mogul meet’n'greet. But today half of the guests who gathered under a tent because of the cold and threatening rain were has-beens, and the other half were bonafide power players scattered inbetween. My snitches spotted Ron Howard, BreTt Ratner, Les Moonves, Tom Freston, David Geffen, Sandy Gallin, Bert Fields, Michael Eisner, Rupert Murdoch, Jane Fonda, Brad Grey, Larry Gordon, Ron Meyer, Ben Silverman, Jeff Berg, Jerry Weintraub, Irving Azoff, Howard Rosenman, Jason Binn, Shirley MacLaine, Victoria Beckham, Jonathan Dolgen, Russell Simmons, Quincy Jones, Larry Mark, Bob Daly, Bill Condon, Terry Semel, Jim Berkus, Kevin McCormack, Jon Hamm, Dan Aykroyd, Lee Daniels, Penny Marshall, Edward Norton, Joan Collins. Anderson Cooper offered his arm to Nancy Reagan and stayed attentive to her as did Betsy Bloomingdale. (“It was very, very sweet,” one of my spies reported back.) The only other coupling of interest was Murdoch and Eisner huddled in deep conversation. ”The feeling was one of relief that we’re still here,” one partygoer told me. Yes, but some survived better than others…

Old and ugly crowd? Jon Hamm, Edward Norton, Anderson Cooper, Lee Daniels? Not so old and certainly not ugly.
This “old and ugly” seems pretty impressive to me. Am I missing something?
We thought it was a great time and we saw a lot of interesting people there. A few non-has-beens you didn’t mention: Kate Mara, Kevin Huvane, Bill Maher, and Steve Martin. Heard that Team Todd was there too, getting mad props for Alice. It was cold though.
umm, this does not seem like a has-been party to me? Why get snarky just because a lot of guests are over 55?
sounds like this was THE party be at. nothing wrong with “old”hollywood, these days. in fact, we could use a little more “old”
now-a-days.
“Old and ugly”? Fire that snitch.
In addition to the names in the above comments, Ratner/Beckham/Condon do not seem old.
But more importantly, we hear a lot about age-ism in Hollywood (most recently re WGA lawsuit etc.) This piece smacks of age-ism.
I personally would rather hang with this distinguished crowd with their achievements than party with kids from Gossip Girl, SamRohan and the cast of Smallville.
Frankly, any shindig with Eisner and Geffen in the same room is one I wish I could attend just as the catered help!
Geffen, Diller, Fields. Could build a nation w/these guys but leave Graydon at the terminal. There`s no room at this Inn.
Talk about a great networking opportunity!!
i heard Eisner, Geffen and Ovitz are planning a seminar at UCLA. It’s named after their initials: E.G.O.
Wow too bad the Kardashins weren’t there to class things up. Nikki you wouldn’t have your old and ugly job if it weren’t for these people.
The final two sentences of your report, Nikki, were especially meaningful. “THE FEELING WAS ONE OF RELIEF THAT WE’RE STILL HERE.” YES, BUT SOME SURVIVED BETTER THAN OTHERS. Made me think they were talking about the shameful situation at the Motion Picture Home where many of the powerful party goers bear the responsibility for inflicting more than two years of anguish on Hollywood’s frail and infirm. Maybe they shouldn’t be so quick to want to close the MPTF nursing home and displace our community’s most vulnerable. The Katzenbergs, Dillers, Geffens, Eisners of the world aren’t getting any younger and are only a few years away from being ‘has beens’ themselves.
