EXCLUSIVE: Paramount Pictures has set Tod “Kip” Williams to direct Paranormal Activity 2, the sequel to the sleeper smash. (UPDATE: I beat producer Oren Peli to the punch. He didn’t make the announcement on the PA website until 8:45 AM.) That job became available when Kevin Greutert was forced to depart when Lionsgate and Twisted Pictures enforced an option that made him the director of Saw 3D, the film that opens against the Paranormal sequel on October 22. Interesting choice of a filmmaker best known for directing The Door in the Floor, an inventive adaptation of the John Irving novel A Widow For One Year. The sequel was written by Michael Perry and is being produced by Oren Peli (who directed the original) and Jason Blum, with Akiva Goldsman and Steven Schneider exec producers. Production will start in May.
UPDATE: Here’s what Peli wrote on the PA website: We are thrilled to have Kip working with us. He is the guy we want at the helm, because he knows exactly what we want to deliver to the fans… I don’t want to spoil the story but I promise it’ll surprise you”.

Makes sense to me…Door in the Floor was a scary movie — scary bad. The only worse choice would have been Akiva, who shnored into this party by pretending he wanted to direct and then became a producer and will help shape the script with his brilliance. This sequel is shaping up to be captained by a ship of fools. Go Paramount!
An interesting choice. DITF was very solid.
I loved DOOR IN THE FLOOR and think that’s an unusual, but great choice! Now I’m actually excited to see the sequel!
Nope, Oren Peli beat you on the “exclusive.” Sorry, Mike!
Wow. Poor dude won’t have much to work with, seeing as how production started without him to meet the October deadline.
Anyone else remember what an “interesting” choice Joe Berlinger was to direct Blair Witch 2?
Juss sayin..
As someone who knows Joe and used to work with Lionsgate, I can tell you that BLAIR WITCH: BOOK OF SHADOWS” was FAR from his fault. That studio took a director that knows how to build natural creepiness into even documentary footage (see BROTHER’S KEEPER or PARADISE LOST for proof, and then managed him to death. Made him shoot it a certain way, made him cast certain people, took it away from him to edit THEIR way, and on and on… if he’d been given the freedom to simply make the movie, it would have rocked. Just one person’s opinion, but your point that studios screw up stuff is well taken. They stick their greedy fingers into a baker’s delicious pie and mash it into pulp, and then don’t understand why no one wants to eat their now-disgusting pie glop. Then they blame the baker. And the delivery truck. And the driver. And the guy who bagged the flour. And nature. Basterds.
I thought that the more straight, narrative style of BW2 WAS Berlinger’s choice. On the DVD commentary, he discussed how he was approached to shoot it as a documentary, and he felt that his point would be fake documentaries are dangerous – hence the ending of the film.
While I’m sure they f’d things up – I do believe some of the choice of how that film was to be made was his. Or at least, that’s what he said.
Talk about giving us the creeps…
So Oren Peli makes the original by himself in his house….paramount buys the remake rights….then basically just releases the movie as opposed to remaking it. Jason Blum makes millions of dollars and parades around town as “the producer of Paranormal Activity” even though he did not produce the movie. Paramount the decides to do the sequel, so they say, what made the original one work….we should hire Akiva Goldsman to produce it, hire the guy who did the door in the floor to direct in, and a guy who had a script on the black list to write it…..that should do it.
And when movies tank it is never the studios fault.
The studio head in charge of this has to do something different,The first Paranormal Activity was a joke of a film that only sold because of hype. You’re not going to trick the movie going public twice…
you’re perfectly right the guywho did this movie has to be one of the most talented people in hollywood ( maybe becausehe wasn’t in olllywood when he made the movie). I son’t see how they can make a sequeal anyway Micah’s dead depending on the ending they use so is katie are they going to show the next little girlthe demon goes on to. I also want to know who does paramount think they are they’re going to muscle out the real man behind the moviehe paid $15,000 of his own money and now they’re raking in millions, but thats how it works i refuse to go to the movies to see this i’m ready to download it as soon as it’s available
Book of Shadows: Blair Witch 2, ya’ll
Did anyone think this movie was scary? Or entertaining?
Did this movie make money? Or loads of cash?
PA was a good film but Hollywood should know better to make a sequel that would not live up to the 1st one since it was a one hit wonder.
Silly Paramount….failure written on this even before they start filming.
Paranormal Activity was an awful film in the same vein as The Blair Witch Project.Cheesy plot devices and cliches.
Hey ‘armand’ I would watch would you say about “silly paramount” the same “silly paramount” that gave you the opportunity in the story dept. What did you bring forth?
Seriously, what did you bring?
The first paranormal has earned the sequel, hats off to par.
I am gonna take my break…
Didn’t they at one point gonna go with someone like brian depalma — he would have made it interesting.
WOW, They are actually making a sequel to that completely pathetic movie. Paranormal Activity was easily in the top 5 worst movies ever made.
Not scary in any way, shape, or form. Let’s watch a chick stand in the middle of a room for 10 minutes. Oh no she got dragged out of bed and down a hall. Soooooooo scary!!!!
The only people that found that movie scary or entertaining at all were girlie girls that jump when you say boo while standing right in front of them. I can’t believe I am actually going to have to put up with the mass amounts of moronic chicks changing their facebook statuses to “OMG Paranormal Activity is the scariest movie I have ever seen” AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAARRRRRRRRRRRRRGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH Why Hollywood? Why?
I wonder if some of those morons that tried to debate with me about the authenticity of the first one will still try to tell me it is real now that they are making a sequel.
(even though it says right at the end of the movie it’s fake lol)
Bad form Hollywood, bad form.
OMG paranormal activity was the scariest movie ive ever seen!
the first movie was a quick way to catch up on some sleep… the seconds sure to induce a coma or two……….
Paranormal Activity, was this ment to scare people? it was so bogus it has to be one of the worse horror movies ive seen. Talk about predictable, was it SCAREY? NO in fact ive had scarier craps.
I hope they made a sequel of “Paranormal Activity” like the movie “The fouth Kind”. terror, Shock and many more.
