Statement by Walt Disney Co president/CEO on the passing of Fess Parker: “Like many kids growing up in the 50’s, Davy Crockett was my first hero, and I had the coonskin cap to prove it. Fess Parker’s unforgettable, exciting and admirable performance as this American icon has remained with me all these years, as it has for his millions of fans around the world. Fess is truly a Disney Legend, as is the heroic character he portrayed, and while he will certainly be missed, he will never be forgotten.”

I think by now he’s actually been pretty well forgotten.
If the CEO of Disney could change their programing for adults from the baby boom generation to watch old disney movies of Fess parker,Swamp Fox etc I would have some respect for what Disney has become. They show cheap made cartoons today and ratings are so far away from what Disney used to have it isn’t funny. You think they could honor someone who helped put disney on tv back in the 50-60′s era. They got the almighty dollar sign mentality the powers that be. It sickens me people like this can tear down an institution made by a wonderful man such as Walt Disney. He would turn over in his grave if he knew how much Disney TV is cheapened. Let it be known that there are lots of baby boomers that can’t say a good word for the greedy people that run it. Well I lost my Coonskin cap thru the years that doesn’t make him a fan of Fess Parker. If he was so much of a fan he would dedicate a few hours of programing to Mr Parker whom I have more respect for then a greedy and phony CEO of Disney. I bet Mr Parker agrees.
A true gentleman in real life. We need more actors and role models like Parker and Davey Crockett.
I was one of those kids too. My coonskin cap was as much a part of me as everyday life itself. Davy (Fess, too) was my first hero. I still know all the words to that song.
Fess Parker made a huge cultural impact on America in the 1950′s which not only ignited the explosion of coonskins caps across the nation at that time, but also influenced later generations. As a child growing up in the 1980′s Fess Parker’s Davey Crockett film were a weekend staple thoroughly enjoyed by my brother and I. Many backyard adventures were inspired by Crockett’s tales which are GRADE A entertainment: witty dialogue, exciting action packed adventures & all around good fun.
Rest In Peace King Of The Wild Frontier. Thanks for the entertaining films, memories and adventures –

Mike Fink: I can out-run, out-jump, out-sing, out-swim, out-dance, out-shoot, out-eat, out-drink…
Davy Crockett: Out-talk?
Mike Fink: Out-talk, out-cuss, out-fight anybody in the whole Mississippi and Ohio Rivers put together!
I am too young for memories of a coonskin cap hanging off my head, but Fess Parker was still on my radar. Truly, I couldn’t imagine anyone else in the role…it was perfect casting.
And always fun to watch on tv.
Fess Parker also played another real-life frontier hero, “Daniel Boone”, in a series that ran very successfully for six seasons (1964-1970).
What many people don’t know is that “Davy Crockett” was never a regular series. It ran as a series of five specials in the mid-1950′s on what was then called “Disneyland”.
Although filmed in color, “Crockett” originally aired in black-and-white. I believe it was not shown in color until the five specials were rerun on NBC (which by that time had the Disney show, re-named “The Wonderful World Of Color”) in the early 1960′s.
One of the true greats, and true gentlemen, of the business.
Thanks for everything, Fess.
Finally someone besides me remembers “Daniel Boone”. I remember hurrying home after school so I could watch his adventures with Mingo and Israel, his son. Such a wonderful show, I have the fondest memories those 6 years ran. I’ve often wondered why they never show reruns, the show had strong moral values. Fess Parker successfully ran his own Vineyard in California til he died. His website showed many pictures of him. He aged beautifully and gracefully. His hair was pure white but his face barely showed his age. Rest in peace, you’ll always be remembered fondly by this fan.
