EXCLUSIVE: CAA signed Mark Ruffalo, the actor who made his directing debut with the Sundance film Sympathy for Delicious. Ruffalo most recently had been with WME and manager Robert Stein, but had been without a representative for some time. Ruffalo made quite a Sundance splash, with his directorial debut winning a Special Jury Prize. He also starred with Julianne Moore and Annette Bening in The Kids Are All Right, one of the standout films of Sundance that was acquired by Focus Features after a bidding battle.

he was good in Shutter Island too
this guy is a great actor.
A huge talent. He had me at You Can Count On ME. Nobody does pain better.
What’s next – 360?
Supremely talented actor. He is very blessed, too, and seems to know it. When you face your own mortality, you find inner strength and wisdom … and that has always shown itself in his interviews and his acting. The Midwest groundedness comes through as well. Other actors could learn how to conduct themselves with the media and in roles by watching him. He is under-utilized and often under-rated, but I believe he will find that one role that will propel him to an Oscar nomination. Any agent is lucky to rep him.
Always great to hear from smart, insightful Anita Busch.
You are very kind. Thank you.
About time! Mike Nilon at CAA built his career from the ground up…hope it’s another great partnership the second time around.
Fingers crossed they can give him the kind of career he deserves.
why would he sign at CAA just to be behind a million other guys ahead of him?
Dumb move on his part….sad that his great talent will go to waste on the dreck that CAA will likely put him in.
No one “puts” anyone in anything. I’ve been a working actor for thirty years. My reps present me with meetings, or offers, and, out of the ones who are interested, I decide what I want to do.
That’s not to say CAA won’t have higher earners they’ll give preference to. But no one “puts” anyone in anything.
Great guy! Great actor. Best to him and his family…
One of the best actors of our generation. I don’t think someone this good will get lost in the shuffle there. Or at least I hope not…
Love Mark. Wish him well. I’m so glad to see him back, ready to dive in again. He has amazing actor talent, and is unusually kind AND honest about the biz and his work. Raw emotions. Raw talent. He deserves the best.
what career? this guy is lame. who cares? no one still knows who he is. is this news worthy?
Mark Ruffalo is a fine actor, loved him in Zodiac.
Why dump your manager when he assisted you in getting to the point
of being noticed as a great actor. As a great actor not just a movie star takes time, patience and loyalty to those who were there when you went unnoticed. Robert Stein helped you along the bumby road. Yes your talent was God given. But Robert guided you, cared for you, and fought the necessary battles to get you those
roles. Robert is one of the good guys. Bad mistake to not have him by your side.
Hi Robert – Good to see you on the boards!
Seriously – Stein was always a hindrance, never a help.
x, you are so naive!
Your agents “present” you with offers or meetings? What about the all the other material or meetings you are not “presented” with? I’d like to see CAA fight to get Mark any part over: Brad Pitt, Bradley Cooper, Gerard Butler, Tom Crusie, Will Smith, etc., etc.,
You might be right. I might very well be naive. But, if I were producing or directing a film, I’d sure as hell know whether I preferred Brad Pitt, Bradley Cooper, Gerard Butler, Tom Cruise, Will Smith, or Mark Ruffalo for a role way before I started talking with any of their agents.
To all those who claim Robert Stein “built” Mark’s career: I barely know Robert, and haven’t a clue how effective his work was/is. But Mark’s career was “built” when his long time friend Kenny Lonergan directed him in his terrific performance in “You Can Count on Me,” after which the world took notice, and offers started coming in.
I would think this move has to do with how well he just played the second guy through the door. Are the guys you mentioned as competition really competition to him at all? It would seem more likely he’ll support each of the CAA leads, as he did Leo. Kinda like what Bateman’s become, only MR is better for the heavier fare (like SI). No denying that this guy has got game (on screen).
X is right on! The only people who think agents and managers get you roles are actors in the beginning of their career or ones who can’t break in. As someone who has worked in the business for 25 years at many major agencies I agree with X. We never got a role for anyone. It was always about a call coming in making an offer or checking a schedule. If an offer came in we would immediately look on our list to see he might need the job more or who might be right for the job if this actor didn’t take it.
Simple as that.
Thank you.
Will never carry important studio movies like Damon, DiCaprio or Pitt. He’ll be in the same position in 5 years carrying those guys jocks. I wonder if this has anything to do with his 2 line performance in WHERE THE WILD THINGS ARE? Should have stuck with Stein who had him for nearly 15 years, and built his career from nothing..
dont know robert stein, but ruffalo will be the 1000th person on caa’s roster and unless he plans on hiring a powerful manager to help him with his competition, his career will go down the toilet. poor guy. he clearly doesnt know how hollywood works.
Poor guy? yeah right, I guess it is not enough to be a fine actor. Mark do what you love and what you are clearly so talented at doing, the rest will take care of itself.
I rarely comment, but feel the need to jump in here. I’m not surprised he parted ways with Stein. Has anyone reading this article dealt with the guy? He has the attention span of a bored canine. “Squirrel!?” I’ve dealt with him off and on for a decade — and he never remembers my name when I see him. Who wants that guy as his manager? Unctuous fool.
X-You’re an arrogant uninformed moron. An an ex-agent, I can tell you there is absolutely a strategic effort to gets clients jobs, especially into today’s extremely competitive marketplace. Perhaps if you weren’t such an ungrateful person, your agent might have worked a little harder to try and make you a star instead of just a “working” actor. It’s easier to make the extra effort for the clients who aren’t malcontents.
X is right in his/hers experience and Oh please/Anonymous is right in his/hers. How can you argue and name call? Neither of you are wrong. People will only believe what their own experiences allow them to believe.
Hi all!
I’m a Mark’s fan since he played in “My life without me”. I’d like to get in touch with him (I live in Spain). How could I do it? Anita, you seem to be in the loop on current events. Any help? Thank you very much!
Supremely talented actor. He is very blessed, too, and seems to know it.
This is great news for CAA. Its almost like Tom Cruise
He is a great actor, should be even better after.
