EXCLUSIVE: Martin Scorsese is lining up his young leads for The Invention of Hugo Cabret. I’m told that Asa Butterfield will play the title character, with the female lead role of Isabelle going to Chloe Moretz, who is lighting up the screen in trailers for the Matthew Vaughn-directed Kick-Ass. She plays Hit Girl in a film Lionsgate debuted to raucous reaction at SXSW. Moretz also stars in Let Me In, the Americanized remake of the memorable Swedish vampire film Let The Right One In. She plays the bloodsucker.

Butterfield starred in The Boy in the Striped Pyjamas, and most recently wrapped Nanny McPhee and the Big Bang. Sacha Baron Cohen and Ben Kingsley will also star in The Invention of Hugo Cabret. (Sacha Baron Cohen Joining Marty Scorsese) I’ve also confirmed the film will be distributed by Sony, through the deal that producer Graham King’s GK Films set with the Sony Worldwide Acquisitions Group. It seems odd to imagine Scorsese building a film around children. I can’t think of too many Scorsese films it would be appropriate for these kids to even see.

The Invention of Hugo Cabret was one of the most amazing children’s books of the last 10 years. A beautifully illustrated book, told as much through its imagery as its narrative, it is also a book with a love for the early days of film, particularly French filmmakers.
The book won the Caldecott Medal for “Best Illustrated Children’s Book,” but I don’t know which Scorsese will make the movie. Will it be the visual master of “Raging Bull” or the talented hack who made “Shutter Island”?
Could be an amazing film, although the target audience is not your typical Scorsese audience…
of coure it will b good Asa Butterfield is in it! he is the best actor eva! i love him! Anyone know when will the movie be out? myra x
Pretty cool that Scorsese’s forst “comic book movie” is this wonderful, serious little picture book and not some dreck for Marvel or DC.
Like “Diary of a Wimpy Kid,” this book shows that awesome commercial success can be had outside of the spandex realm of muscle-bulging men having super-fights with each other. And it’s kind of surprising that Disney hasn’t inserted themselves in this deal because it would be an amazing brand for them to get involved in. This is a new classic that kids will be reading for years to come.
PS Marty’s direction of children in KUNDUN was great.
At least Leo won’t be in it
And that’s a good thing?!
Agree, amazing book. Bought it for my then-10-year-old son when it came out and we read it together. References a slew of classic movies, too, from Méliès to Keaton, Chaplin, Renoir, Vigo, Truffaut, on and on. Scorsese is ideal for this. Even “Shutter Island” detractors admit the film’s stylistic brilliance, a dreamlike quality that isn’t dissimilar from aspects of Hugo Cabret.
I’m with you, Mike. I can’t imagine Scorsese going away from his usually gritty films and making kiddie fare.
How many times can idiots use the word: Amazing. On Oscar
night, I counted 32 times. A trip to the moon would be Amazing.
Not some clever bookie for kiddies.
Very happy that Chloe Moretz is getting Scorcese`s attention. She is a fantastic young actress about to break out. I hope Cameron decides to make Battle Angel Alita soon because she would be perfect for the role and he said he would cast a pre-teen or early teen actress.
The film will be great seen as Asa Butterfield’s in it! He’s a fab actor & I wish I could be as lucky as to star beside him in a film. He said in an interview that he wouldn’t want to be a full time actor when he’s older & I can’t believe it! He’s too good to give up a career as an actor! x
I like Asa Butterfield, i can see he is a good actor in The Boy in The Striped Pyjama. Chloe Moretz also a breakthrough actress, see if they’re come together in Martin Scorsese movie!
