UPDATES ‘Basterd’ Christoph Waltz To Play Circus Nazi
From Deadline|London editor Tim Adler:
Remember Mike Fleming’s story last month about Christoph Waltz, who won the Best Actor Oscar on Sunday for his portrayal of a Jew-hunting Nazi, being lined up to play another psychopath in Water For Elephants? Well, it turns out that in going for that role, he dropped out of playing one of the most influential Jews in history. Waltz was going to star as Sigmund Freud in David Cronenberg’s The Talking Cure, due to start filming on May 17 for 10 weeks. Based on the play by Christopher Hampton, the pic is about the conflict between Freud and his pupil Jung.
Waltz’s departure left the producers scrabbling for a replacement. There were fears they would have to scrap the German/Canadian co-production completely. “You’d have thought Waltz wouldn’t want to be typecast as a sadist,” one of the filmmakers grumbled to me. Happily, Viggo Mortensen, who worked so memorably with Cronenberg on Eastern Promises, has just replaced Waltz. Mortensen will star as Freud opposite Michael Fassbender as Jung. Keira Knightley will play Sabina, a disturbed young woman brought to see Jung by her father. Jung and Sabina have an affair, and the producers are promising me “lots of spirited sex”. (Viggo had that other spirited sex scene with Maria Bello in Cronenberg’s A History Of Violence.)
If the movie’s going to be as hot as the producers hope, I can’t help but think that as a title The Talking Cure is a little flaccid. Surely the filmmakers can come up with something better?

The fucking cure?
love the idea of mortensen reteaming with cronenberg yet again, but will kiera knightly really be able to pull off the weight (pun not intended) in scenes opposite him, or even fassbender?
This is one of those instances where an actor’s replacement is the better choice in the end. Mortensen and Cronenberg work great together.
Christoph won Best Supporting Actor…in case you didn’t know.
Good. This means Water for Elephants must be pushing ahead. Excellent.
Christoph Waltz’s performance and subsequent well deserved accolades as Col. Hans Landa in Inglourious Basterds have propelled a thirty year career from relative obscurity to the heights of Hollywood fame.
He is in a wonderful and yet dangerous place as Hollywood figures out how it can capitalize and generate revenue off the Christoph Waltz gravy train.
Christoph’s roots are in theater, and I hope that he can step back and remember what got him to the party, and continue to move forward in ways that honor his skill and craft.
I am not sure if Christoph yet understands that his personal choices as a trained actor are most important, and should not be driven by his growing list of advisors who mostly have their pocketbooks as their motivations. “actions will speak for themselves, but it is when the motivations for these actions come into question that problems will arise”.
I am not voicing an opinion about this particular role, but I am suggesting and hoping that Christoph Waltz chooses wisely.
Never forget how you got here…savor the moment…and stay true to yourself.
Good luck, Christoph!
New title:
“Cigar”.
The sex scene on the steps was horrible, along with the REST of that movie.
Sure hope the Freud pic is good!
I’ve read the screenplay (expanded by Hampton from his play) and it is, indeed, a hot property — three actors’ field day — as well as some of the best dialogue I’ve ever read. “The Talking Cure” is not only an appropriate title but a multi-layered one, since “The Couch Trip” has already been used. Perhaps “Transformers 4: The Ultimate Slap-down Between Jung and Freud.”
Viggo is great, can’t wait to see how this turns out.
Congrats to Viggo for taking this movie role. Yeah! He’s going to make another movie, not retiring. I did some research. Here are some quotes of Dr. Sigmund Freud.
“Being entirely honest with oneself is a good exercise.”
“Men are more moral than they think and far more immoral than they imagine.”
“From error to error, one discovers truth.”
“Opposition is not necessarily enmity, it is merely misused and made an occasion for enmity.”
“Do you not know how uncontrolled and unreliable the average human being is in all that concerns sexual life?”
“Children are completely egoistic; they feel their needs intensely and strive ruthlessly to satisfy them.”
“The ego is not master in its own house.”
I am happy Waltz turned this one down to star in the other film.
I thought Viggo was retiring from movies for several years.
Glad he is still taking roles, this seems like an interesting movie.
Freud/Jung
Complex Freud
Jung at Heart
How about calling it “Penis Envy”?
Yes, the title could use some work although “the talking cure” is a big part of his contribution (the term was coined by a patient). Nearly everyone has heard of Freud, but few know his ties to Jung and how he escaped Nazi Germany. A good trailer will also be important.
“Spirited sex” between 50 years old Viggo and 20something Keira? No thanks. And, for the record, his butt was badly sagging in History of Violence. Leave nudity to Taylor Lautner-types.
Also, what Viggo needs isn`t another sex scene but another hit. His last one was ROTK and he tanked all movies he was in siunce than. Boxoffice poison.
good choice. Waltz is way,way over rated in my opinion based on one role in a hit movie in an actor-proof role. I am not buying.
Viggo on the other hand has tremendous sexual magnetism and could be very, very interesting in this role. The accent is no problem, just use a slight stock German dialect. But Viggo needs to go deeper now and drop this crying eye routine he goes to as an actor. He needs also to test his top end so that when he gets angry he is not afraid to explode in the grand tradition of Hackman and Pacino and de Niro. Mortenson also seems a bit shy, a bit timid in front of the camera which can be appealing but can also get quite tiresome. A little less subtlety now and more combustibility now please. And Waltz can take a hike as far as I am concerned. He is no where near the actor of a Max Schell or the fellow who did Mephisto a while back and was truly free and brilliant.
Dear Buddhabob,
I don’t mind that you’re not a fan of CW. It’s always a question of individual taste and a result of personal experience. You think he’s overrated and can’t compete with “the fellow who did Mephisto (…)”. That fellow was also an Austrian by the name of Claus Maria Brandauer who was once nominated for an Academy Award (long, long ago). He did not win but Herr Waltz did – so who can be viewed as the better man? Still – it’s a question of taste and preference. I’m pretty sure that Herr Waltz would have done a great job on this part. No doubt about that!
OMG Viggo is not giving up films to take up poetry and photography!!!! He was absolutely amazing in “Eastern Promises”. Looking forward to this one and I do hope they change the title, but I can’t say I’m impressed by your suggestion. I thought you said “something better”.
Hopefully the spirited sex will be erotic and not just graphic. Could be extremly useful in our
owerloaded porn society with so few layers. I feel shure Dame Kneightly will do an importent
job to pay interest in this to a wider public. Great pity she shall not take part in MFL rmake!
Thomas Sundby – Norwy
Finde ich super!
Freue mich auf Viggo
How bout calling it ‘What’s Eating Sabina’? –lol (hey, if the subject matter is serious and there’s gonna be ‘lots of spirited sex’ in the adaptation, a little humor can go along way.)
Btw, KK is gonna slay this movie. Like Saffron Burrows did in Figgis’ ‘Miss Julie’. Only KK is always on the radar and likely won’t escape award nominations. Namaste friends.
this sounds awesome – viggo and cronenberg love each other.
Or how about: Sometimes a Banana is just a Banana
Or “Sometimes a Banana is just a Banana”?
Viggo is getting a bit boring really….he kinda hit his peak with Lord of the rings….gets stale if a director and actor work together to many times, and i think this relationship is drying up. Will adriadna gil pop up in the movie too?
