While many in Hollywood are having trouble finding work these days, Bryan Singer’s problem is there is only one of him to go around and everybody wants him. So Singer and 20th Century Fox have formalized his move from director to producer on X-Men: First Class. That is the bad news for X-Men die-hards who love the first two films Singer directed. Here’s the good part: he is leaving because Fox liked the script that Jamie Moss wrote from Singer’s treatment so much that the studio wants the film right away, envisioning it as the first leg of a trilogy. The hope is to have it ready for 2011 release.
Singer will join Lauren Shuler Donner and Simon Kinberg as producers. He’s not available because Warner Bros and Legendary are locked into a summer production start on Jack the Giant Killer. They’ll begin casting shortly. It is a big CG project, and they are likely to either shoot 3D or convert it later.
Last December, Singer agreed to direct the First Class prequel after the studio sparked to his detailed treatment, with the studio knowing full well Singer would likely make the other movie first. The willingness to wait changed when execs flipped for Moss’s script. He’s now honing the origin story that focuses on Xavier and Magneto and offers similar opportunities that JJ Abrams took advantage of to resuscitate Star Trek.
Fox is short-listing directors and has talked to several. Perhaps sensing the momentum and worried Singer might get booked for First Class passage, Warner Bros and Legendary were quick to lock Singer into an iron-clad deal on Jack the Giant Killer. After all, it was they who got the director to do Superman Returns when Fox didn’t close him fast enough on X-Men 3. That move singed Singer’s relationship with Fox until they kissed and made up with First Class.
Fox hasn’t definitively set this as the next X-Men project, but why replace Singer for any other reason? Fox did get a strong draft of a Wolverine sequel from Christopher McQuarrie, and while there is no director, production could start in the fall when Hugh Jackman is free from the Shawn Levy-directed Real Steel. Fox also has new versions of Marvel Comics franchises Fantastic Four and Daredevil percolating. My bet is First Class starts production in summer or early fall, when Singer will be off slaying giants of his own.

As a Marvel Xmen comic fan starting in 1978, I am constantly amazed at how the writers dont call on the vast material that is in the Marvel catalogue
The storylines written through the eighties were so damn good yet we have to keep coming back to the Xavier/Magneto storylines.
Bring on the Xmen vs Morlocks vs Reavers vs Hellfire Club story lines.
Bring in techno heads like Forge, Ninja characters Psylocke, Pure action teams like X Force – remember Cable was written as a result of the Terminator success).. man start researching the best story arcs people ..
X-MEN MUST USE SINGER, it’s never been quite the same since. X-MEN is Singers, to use another director will be extremely disappointing regardless of any situation. The last two X-MEN I did think were very good but the first two are superb. Bring Singer back at ALL COSTS.
Everybody talks about originality, come on let’s be honest. When your a teenager, everything is original. As we get older, we start to see repeated themes, right? I think there comes a point where one must start to have more of an open mind and decide if it was just entertaining. Case in point, Avatar. It was actually pretty original, it just could of been a little more slick and better written than just playing it safe. But I was a teenager when Terminator 2 came out, and gosh darn I thought that was the greatest movie ever made then, still holds up…
I’m really sick and tired of Singer’s treatment on the X-men Franchise. He already messed up Big CBM Franchise like X-Men and Superman so I’m really glad that he’s not the director.
They should kick him out permanently.
I really hope that this is a Reboot. So we can have the original X-men ESPECIALLY CYCLOPS, He was never given the spotlight in those 3 Fox-Men movies.
I think it’s about time that they give respect to Jack Kirby and Stan Lee’s Original X-Men creation.
GIVE CYCLOPS THE LEADING ROLE!!!!
X-MEN FIRST CLASS SHOULD BE ABOUT THE ORIGINAL FIVE X-MEN!!!
well,i dont care who will gonna direct the first class. I want to see the X-men 4..
I ADORE Superman returns. My favorite comic book movie ever. Yep. Sorry. No. I’m not sorry, I’m just sorry for you.
First X-men: good (specially the relation between Wolverine and Rogue), but not great.
X-men 2: not as good as the first, some aweful scenes (the fight between Wolverine and Lady Deathstrike,…), Brian Cox, the first and the last scenes save the movie.
Usual suspects: still pretty solid, but not a masterpiece. Awesome casting, very good direction.
Valkyrie: I really liked this one. Lots of suspense, even though the end was known from the beginning, and again, VERY solid casting and direction.
Apt pupil: Good acting, some strong scenes, but the script wasn’t great (he could have chopped off Koteas’ character,…).
Public access: very interesting first movie but I’d love to watch it again.
Overrated comic book movies: Batman begins (Nolan is good, oh yeah, but he’s not the greatest action director, to say the least), The incredible Hulk (horrible script, Norton and Tyler pitiful)
Underrated comic book movies: The crow, Batman returns, Hulk (yep, the Ang Lee one…again, I’m sorry for you, not sorry for me!), Superman returne (OH YEAH!).
The dark knight: I loved it…90% of it…Nolan will NEVER be a great action director (OK, the truck chase was very good)…
So, I’ll stick with Superman returns, Richard Donner’s Superman, Hulk, The crow, Spiderman 2 (perhaps the best comic book ever: top notch direction, action scenes, and fantastic script), Batman returns and The dark knight.
You don’t agree! Go out and get hit by a truck! ^^
What’s with everyone loving Spiderman 2? The entire spiderman series was crap, Toby and Kirsten have the worst chemistry and the villians were never what they should have been. I wish I could get a line-up of all Toby’s expressions so I could show people how he keeps that wide-eyed retard face going for about 90% of the series. It doesn’t compare at all to Singer’s or Nolan’s franchises, whatever you may think about them.
Yes he’s a ho hum director, did you see superman returns? lmao. This is the best news Ive heard all year. I just wish they would copy the x-men comics exactly wich singer flopped, while casting some ok leads (stewart, mcellen, jackman were terrific).
lmao well thankfully im in the majority as 80% including die hard fans hated superman returns, including the horrid actors and watered down superman music.
nothing like 20 year olds with no taste to ruin childhood franchises. way to go guys.
Superhero movies are hard to do, because the directors are NOT fans of the comics. So they don’t know like for Marvel, show the powers that are known of the characters instead of trying to modify their powers for the sake of the film. That is their problem. When Donner did Superman, you could tell Donner really knew the story of Calal and/or Clark Kent. Xmen movies their powers who reduced to certain powers of their abilities. Daredevil, Electra were jokes. Hulk and Incredible Hulk each had their own pros and cons. Hulk pleased more the cartoon Hulk fans. Incredible Hulk pleased more the fans who grew up on the tv series. Batman, well Batman is so diverse in pleasing todays fans, they forgot how to relate to the people through Batman. Thats why we always prefer the bad guys. Last thing, Hollywood is going through a dry patch of originality thats why are popping out remakes and sequels and prequels and origins of movies past. Take note Hollywood, all those are about 90% flops cause they are not true to the original film. Biggest disappointment for me was Clash of the titans.
Superman returns was a joke, Spacey was horrible the whole cast was. Nothing was credible, most of movie reeked of movie sets.
>> comparing Avatar to Dances with Wolves, Ferngully,
>> and Pocahontas
Yeah, good comparison.
Because Dances With Wolves happened on another planet with people projecting their psyches into 15 foot blue aliens who could communicate with a world – mind on a planet with floating mountains & 1km high trees …
And Pocahontas made love using a direct neural link connection between brains (now let the Existenz comparisons start … LOL)
yeah, good comparison
Ok, so for the sake of argument here, how come there’s an extreme amount of complaining either for or against Singer’s work here? How come e-mails or good old fashioned letters aren’t written to Fox or WB en masse from the fans saying “Hey! We don’t want him!”
Don’t get me wrong, he makes a decent producer and he has an ability to find talent, but behind a camera things can get a little Sit-n-Spin if you know what I mean. But my point is, tell the people we have a problem with that we actually have a problem with them.
All of the superhero movies have been pretty bad. I mean, as someone who enjoys the comics, none of them have stayed particularly true to them. I know writers want to take artistic license, but when you have about 30-40 years worth of scripts(in the comics), why do you always feel the need to stick something in there that doesn’t belong? Or cut something out that does belong? brief list off the top of my head:
Where the fuck are Ra’s Al Ghul’s lazarus pits? Really though, thats the most important part of the character. Huge fuck up.
Why is there some random Katie Holmes, when Thalia (Ra’s’ daughter, and a batman love interest in the comics) already exists?
Green goblin is spidermans best friends dad for some reason?
What the fuck did they do to my deadpool!?!?!?
Ben Affleck…Really??? Fuck you.
I can’t even talk about Punisher without losing my shit.
Lady deathstrike, for some reason, doesn’t know wolverine, and his “origins” never talk about where she comes from, they just throw her in there, without talking about wolverine in japan or ANYTHING AT ALL about that very important part of his character development. Without even touching on that, why the fuck put her in at all?
Superman has a baby. Nuff Said.
The complete lack of any sight of Galactus, other than some dark clouds. I was really hoping to see that purple and pink.
Hellboy makes me want to cry.
Iceman, Beast, and Angel were ALL on the team way before Wolverine or most of the others in the movie.
Rogue worked for the brotherhood for a long time before she joined the x-men, and only joins because she falls for Gambit.
While we’re on the subject of gambit, hes cajun. hes supposed to sound cajun. GOD FUCKING DAMMIT. Same problem with the x-men cartoon.
anyway, at least they hired someone with a real drinking problem to play tony stark. robert downey, you get a gold star.
this concludes my rant.
I will see and enjoy it if they agreed to do a remake X3 or do an X4.
